A distributed acoustic sensing (DAS) optical fiber system has been studied using intensity-based optical time-domain reflectometry (i-OTDR). The fiber strain originated by sound waves (pressure waves) is in general quite small to enable the detection using conventional Rayleigh backscattering intensity based systems (low signal to noise ratio). Here, a 10 m portion of optical fiber has been rolled following a plane spiral shape in order increase the fiber surface subjected to the acoustic waves pressure and improve the signal to noise ratio (SNR). The performance of the system within the human voice frequency range (300-3400Hz) has been studied showing to effectively acquire voice signals at different points along a ～2.5 Km fiber.

Scientometrics and bibliometrics, the subfields of library and information science, deal with the quantity and quality of research outputs. Currently, various scientometric indices are being used to quantify and compare research outputs. The most widely known is the h-index. However, this index and its derivatives suffer from dependence on the mere count of a scholar's highly cited publications. To remedy this deficiency, we developed a novel index, the Universal Research Index (UR-Index) (https://***/UR-Index/) by which every single publication has its own impact on the total score. We developed this index by surveying international top 1 % cited scientists in various disciplines and included additional component variables such as publication type, leading role of a scholar, co-author count, and source metrics to this scientometric index. We acknowledge that unconscious biases built into the component variables included in the UR-Index might put research from specific groups at a disadvantage, thus continued efforts to improve equitable scholarly impact in science and academia are encouraged. © 2023 Elsevier Inc.

Outdoor testing of solar photovoltaic (PV) modules must be carried out at different climates as PV power plants nowadays are installed and continues to be installed in many countries. Present study is outdoor testing results and analyses of 5 thin film modules in Ankara, Turkey. The analyses are carried out using monthly efficiencies of the modules that are derived using the energy yield and input. The average efficiencies of the CIS, CIGS and μc-Si/a-Si thin film modules are. We present the monthly and average efficiencies and discuss their variations with the parameter: input, ambient temperature and relative humidity. We also carried out seasonal analyses using Pearson's correlation coefficient and find out that the efficiencies are differently dependent on the above mentioned parameters. This arose a new open question on differentiation of the strength of the effect of each parameter on the monthly efficiencies. © 2017 IEEE.

Magnetic-free nonreciprocal photonic platform based on time-modulated graphene capacitors

We propose a paradigm for the realization of nonreciprocal photonic devices based on time-modulated graphene capacitors coupled to photonic waveguides, without relying on magneto-optic effects. The resulting hybrid graphene-dielectric platform is low loss, silicon compatible, robust against graphene imperfections, scalable from terahertz to near-infrared frequencies, and it exhibits large nonreciprocal responses using realistic biasing schemes. We introduce an analytical framework based on solving the eigenstates of the modulated structure and on spatial coupled mode theory, unveiling the physical mechanisms that enable nonreciprocity and enabling a quick analysis and design of optimal isolator geometries based on synthetic linear and angular momentum bias. Our results, validated through harmonic-balance full-wave simulations, confirm the feasibility of the introduced low-loss (<3 dB) platform to realize large photonic isolation through various mechanisms, such as narrow-band asymmetric band gaps and interband photonic transitions that allow multiple isolation frequencies and large bandwidths. We envision that this technology may pave the wave to magnetic-free, fully integrated, and CMOS–compatible nonreciprocal components with wide applications in photonic networks and thermal management.

With the tremendous increase in the photovoltaic (PV) power plants world-wide remarkable decreases in their installation prices per watt are attained mainly due to economic scale effect. This brings questioning to increase their energy yields by considering any possible way like fabricating bifacial solar modules. Present study is on the performance analysis of a bifacial PV module using one-year outdoor testing results in Ankara-Turkey. The module performed very well and reached a specific yield value of 1750 kWh/kWp. This value for Central Anatolia region is well above the values predicted (and suggested) by the local authorities. The efficiency and performance ratio variation with respect to ambient and module temperature are obtained. The calculated dependence of efficiency on the module temperature is found to be η=-0.073Tmod+18.05, and the maximum measured module temperature is about 70 °C. The results show that the bifacial modules have the potential to replace the mono facial modules that are now dominating the PV market. © 2017 IEEE.

Using an ensemble of redistricting plans, we evaluate whether a given political districting faithfully represents the geo-political landscape. Redistricting plans are sampled by a Monte Carlo algorithm from a probability distribution that adheres to realistic and non-partisan criteria. Using the sampled redistricting plans and historical voting data, we produce an ensemble of elections that reveal geo-political structure within the state. We showcase our methods on the two most recent districtings of NC for the U.S. House of Representatives, as well as a plan drawn by a bipartisan redistricting panel. We find the two state enacted plans are highly atypical outliers whereas the bipartisan plan accurately represents the ensemble both in partisan outcome and in the fine scale structure of district-level results.
