Robust H ∞ Filtering for Linear Continuous-Time Uncertain Systems With Multiple Delays: An LMI Approach

The problem of robust H ∞ filter design for uncertain continuous-time linear systems with multiple time-delayed states is addressed in this paper. The uncertainties are assumed to belong to convex bounded domains (polytope type uncertainty) and the time delays are supposed to be constant. Delay-independent as well as delay-dependent stability conditions assuring robust stability and a prescribed H ∞ disturbance attenuation for the filtering error system are established, in both cases, in terms of linear matrix inequalities, which can be efficiently solved by standard optimization procedures with global convergence assured. Two illustrative examples are analyzed.

The problem of full order guaranteed cost H/sub /spl infin// filtering design for discrete-time systems with polytope type uncertainty is investigated. The main purpose is to obtain a stable linear filter such that the filtering error system remains quadratically stable within a prespecified H/sub /spl infin// attenuation level. Necessary and sufficient conditions for the existence of such robust filter are provided in terms of linear matrix inequalities (LMIs), which can be efficiently solved by means of high performance convex optimization procedures with global convergence assured. Moreover, as an improvement, the filter dynamics can be constrained to some specific regions inside the unit open disk.

The problem of robust energy-to-peak filtering for linear systems with convex bounded uncertainties is investigated in this paper. The main purpose is to design a full order stable linear filter that minimizes the worst-case peak value of the filtering error output signal with respect to all bounded energy inputs, in such way that the filtering error system remains quadratically stable Necessary and sufficient conditions arc formulated in terms of Linear Matrix Inequalities - LMIs, for both continuous- and discrete-time cases.

The problem of robust H/sub /spl infin// filtering for discrete-time uncertain linear systems with multiple state delays is addressed. The uncertain parameters are supposed to belong to a given convex bounded polyhedral domain. Sufficient conditions for the existence of a stable linear filter assuring stability and a prescribed H/sub /spl infin// performance for the filtering error system for all allowed uncertainties are established in terms of linear matrix inequalities. Efficient numerical algorithms can be used to solve the problem, as illustrated via an example.

Ship design is often multidisciplinary involving several design elements with various types of objectives and constraints (O/C) some easily described as mathematical formulas, others better modeled as descriptive assertions. This paper describes a method based on fuzzy functions and an integrated performance index to model O/C using descriptive assertions to be used with mathematical formulas in optimization. Another issue addressed in this paper concerns the coordination of design elements when sequentially coupled, that is, when one leads the other and the performance of the follower depends greatly on the design of the leader. Based on neuro-fuzzy techniques, the method described here coordinates and optimizes sequentially coupled elements. The two methods are applied to machinery arrangement (MA) and pipe routing (PR). Preliminary models for optimization of MA and PR are described considering convenience, producibility: engine room size, interference and location as factors in the O/C set. Some test results from MA/PR applications are presented and discussed. The methods are generic and can be extended to other elements in ship design. They are mutually independent and may be used separately Two advantages of their use are an improvement in overall performance and a reduction in the need for redesign of elements.

The sufficient statistic for the likelihood ratio test between pairwise interaction point processes is well-known. However, the evaluation of its performance is a challenging problem. In this paper it is shown that the distribution of the sufficient statistic can be approximated by the distribution of a Poisson-driven shot-noise random variable. This latter distribution can be readily computed using numerical methods.

A jamming game is considered. A transmitter encodes the data, in a product code (PC), and transmits it in a slow frequency-hopped spread-spectrum (FHSS) system. A hostile jammer attempts to block correct packet reception by adjusting the fraction of the total band in which it distributes the jam power, /spl rho/. Two cases are considered. In the first case, the transmitter declares his strategy and the jammer uses this information to select his best jamming fraction. In the second case, the jammer declares his strategy first and the transmitter uses this information to select his best rates. Results are obtained using asymptotic analysis of a product code using singly extended Reed-Solomon (RS) row and column codes whose size grows large. This asymptotic analysis leads to good choices of the row and column rates for the PC in both cases.

Ms. McCulloch moved to Victoria British Columbia in 1989 and a year later registered in the cooperative education program in Electrical Engineering at the University of Victoria. She is presently in the fifth and final year of the program and has her sights set on graduate school. Besides the work described in this article she has been very much involved in the use of technology to assist in the delivery of curriculum at the senior secondary level. She lives on a country property a half-hour from the University with her husband her horse and three cats. W. Alfred Keddy:is an applications programmer/analyst for the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of Victoria. He received a BEng (1988) in Electrical Engineering and an MASc (1994) from the University of Victoria. Contents and implementation of a computer laboratory for undergraduate electromagnetics are described. The laboratory consists of four 3-hour sessions covering vector calculus, Maxwell's equations (integral and differential forms), wave propagation in materials, and wave behavior at planar interfaces. Each session contains theory (in the Help file), animations (where relevant) and a quiz. The program runs on IBM compatible 486-based PCs in a Windows environment and uses the Borland C ++ 4.0 compiler.
