Recent discoveries on Mott insulating and unconventional superconducting states in twisted bilayer graphene with Moiré superlattices have reshaped the landscape of "twistronics" and paved the way for developing high-temperature superconductors and new devices for quantum computing and sensing. Meanwhile, artificially structured photonic and phononic metamaterials/crystals (or meta-crystals) have become a fertile playground for emulating quantum-mechanical features of condensed matter systems, revealing new routes for robust control of classical waves. Drawing inspiration from the success of twisted bilayer graphene, this perspective casts an overarching framework of the emerging Moiré photonic and phononic meta-crystals that promise novel classical-wave devices. We begin with the fundamentals of Moiré superlattices, before highlighting recent works that exploit twist angle and interlayer coupling as new ingredients to engineer and tailor the band structures and effective material properties of photonic and phononic meta-crystals. We finally discuss future directions and promises of this emerging area in materials science and wave physics. © 2023, CC BY-NC-SA.

CLINICAL DETERIORATION PREDICTION IN BRAZILIAN HOSPITALS BASED ON ARTIFICIAL NEURAL NETWORKS AND TREE DECISION MODELS

Early recognition of clinical deterioration (CD) has vital importance in patients' survival from exacerbation or death. Electronic health records (EHRs) data have been widely employed in Early Warning Scores (EWS) to measure CD risk in hospitalized patients. Recently, EHRs data have been utilized in Machine Learning (ML) models to predict mortality and CD. The ML models have shown superior performance in CD prediction compared to EWS. Since EHRs data are structured and tabular, conventional ML models are generally applied to them, and less effort is put into evaluating the artificial neural network's performance on EHRs data. Thus, in this article, an extremely boosted neural network (XBNet) is used to predict CD, and its performance is compared to eXtreme Gradient Boosting (XGBoost) and random forest (RF) models. For this purpose, 103,105 samples from thirteen Brazilian hospitals are used to generate the models. Moreover, the principal component analysis (PCA) is employed to verify whether it can improve the adopted models' performance. The performance of ML models and Modified Early Warning Score (MEWS), an EWS candidate, are evaluated in CD prediction regarding the accuracy, precision, recall, F1-score, and geometric mean (G-mean) metrics in a 10-fold cross-validation approach. Stress, as a reaction to threatening situations, can raise heart rate and result in serious conditions that might cause significant damage or even be life-threatening. Traditional methods for evaluating stress, which rely on subjective self-reporting and clinical assessments, often suffer from biases and inconsistencies. Artificial intelligence models have been explored to predict stress levels more accurately. This paper investigates the application of Extreme Gradient Boosting in classifying psychological stress using the WESAD dataset, which includes parameters such as acceleration, electrocardiogram, electromyography, electrodermal activity, temperature, and respiration. The dataset was balanced and sampled to create a manageable subset for experimental. Extreme Gradient Boosting was chosen for its efficiency and scalability in handling complex datasets. The model was trained and validated, achieving a 95% accuracy in predicting stress levels. This study highlights the potential of integrating Extreme Gradient Boosting models into wearable devices for real-time stress monitoring. Future work involves optimizing the model to utilize fewer sensors without decreasing accuracy, ensuring it can be integrated into portable/wearable systems using tiny microcontrollers.

In this paper, the overall health index of underground cable system is determined using Fuzzy Logic and Scoring and Weighting Average methods. The relevant data of 73 feeders has been collected in the prepared evaluation forms, divided into five major component groups: cable, joint, termination, manhole, and ductbank. In each component, various testing methods and diagnostic techniques are applied, and then the numerical score is determined according to the technical criteria for condition assessment. Subsequently, the obtained overall health index is multiplied with the conditional factor to incorporate the differences in installation type and configuration as well as the operating and environmental conditions. Finally, the overall health index based on these two methods is compared to verify the accuracy of the obtained results to properly plan the preventive and condition-based maintenance and to improve the reliability of the underground cable system.

This paper provides an examination of the impact of lightning strikes on a 220 kV double circuit (D/C) high voltage transmission line in Bhutan. The study employs the ATP-EMTP software to identify the leading causes of transmission line faults, which are primarily attributed to lightning strikes. Since the transmission lines run through areas in Bhutan that are prone to severe weather conditions and lightning strikes, they are vulnerable to damage, leading to an unreliable power supply. To address this issue, the author proposes several solutions, such as enhancing the tower footing resistance and installing line surge arresters. The author also created models of different transmission towers and analyzed an 18 km stretch of the transmission line that is highly susceptible to lightning strikes.

Future wireless communication systems will evolve toward multi-functional integrated systems to improve spectrum utilization and reduce equipment sizes. A joint radar and communication (JRC) system, which can support simultaneous information transmission and target detection, has been regarded as a promising solution for emerging applications such as autonomous vehicles. In JRC, data security and privacy protection are critical issues. Thus, we first apply covert communication into JRC and propose a joint radar and covert communication (JRCC) system to achieve high spectrum utilization and secure data transmission simultaneously. In the JRCC system, an existence of sensitive data transmission is hidden from a maliciously observant warden. However, the performance of JRCC is restricted by severe signal propagation environment and hardware devices. Fortunately, reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RISs) can change the signal propagation smartly to improve the networks performance with low cost. We first overview fundamental concepts of JRCC and RIS and then propose the RIS-aided JRCC system design. Furthermore, both covert communication and radar performance metrics are investigated and a game theory-based covert rate optimization scheme is designed to achieve secure communication. Finally, we present several promising applications and future directions of RIS-aided JRCC systems. © 2022, CC BY.

Conveyor belts are commonly used in the mining industry for efficient material transport. However, they are prone to failures such as idler anomalies, belt tears, and misalignment. Current monitoring systems only evaluate the conveyor or idle belt's condition at the installation point. This study proposes a method to detect faults in conveyor belts, specifically idler anomalies and belt deviation, using two IMUs installed at the lateral extremities of the belt to evaluate its health along its route. In a reduced-scale conveyor belt, we conducted experiments by collecting gyroscopes and accelerometer data in various scenarios, including normal conditions and anomaly situations. We modified the idlers' physical structure or changed the belt tracks to create these scenarios. We used similarity analysis techniques to compare the data collected and performed statistical hypothesis analysis to observe the influence of the anomaly scenarios on the gyroscope and accelerometer data. We used Dynamic Time Warping (DTW) for gyroscope data to compare ground truth with anomaly scenarios. For the acceleration data, we performed vibration analysis by converting the time domain data to the frequency using Fast Fourier Transform (FFT) and evaluating the difference in spectral density between the reference and anomaly data. Statistical hypothesis analysis revealed that anomaly scenar-ios influenced the gyroscope x-axis and z-axis more. According to the spectral density analysis of the accelerometer, it was revealed that belt misalignment on the y-axis may be detected.

The rapid proliferation of Internet of Things (IoT) devices has posed significant challenges for network resource allocation and management. In this paper, we propose a novel methodology for efficient resource allocation in Software-Defined Networks (SDNs) to meet the unique requirements of IoT applications. Our approach leverages the flexibility and programmability of SDN to dynamically allocate network resources based on the specific needs of IoT devices. Our proposal combines reinforcement learning with dynamic resource allocation, demonstrating its effectiveness in optimizing resource allocation and enhancing network performance. The results highlight the potential of our approach to addressing the resource challenges in SDN-based IoT environments. The proposed method obtains results superior to 30% of throughput in comparison to a traditional resource allocation in SDN to IoT applications.

Immersive learning has gained significant attention with the rising trend of spatial computing, particularly in the after-pandemic era. Numerous research has explored the potential of immersive learning in higher education, primarily on the educational sector. However, prior research has frequently focused too narrowly on the effects of technology and neglected to address the crucial element influencing successful immersive learning in higher education. This study seeks to pinpoint the crucial element contributing to the development of immersive learning experiences. The methodology uses a systematic literature review (SLR) from 2018 up to 2023 to investigate the critical factors of immersive Learning in Higher Education. From the 728 papers initially retrieved, 274 were considered potential candidates, and ultimately, 86 articles were selected based on their relevance to the research question. The results reveal that the critical factors include learning design, technology, immersion, engagement, interactivity, and usability. Academic interests will benefit from this SLR's consequences as institutions create models for designing suitable immersive learning, especially within the context of higher education.
