This paper presents a human-voice enhancement method for a deformable and partially-occluded microphone array. Although microphone arrays distributed on the long bodies of hose-shaped rescue robots are crucial for finding victims under collapsed buildings, human voices captured by a microphone array are contaminated by non-stationary actuator and friction noise. Standard blind source separation methods cannot be used because the relative microphone positions change over time and some of them are occasionally shaded by rubble. To solve these problems, we develop a Bayesian model that separates multichannel amplitude spectrograms into sparse and low-rank components (human voice and noise) without using phase information, which depends on the array layout. The voice level at each microphone is estimated in a time-varying manner for reducing the influence of the shaded microphones. Experiments using a 3-m hose-shaped robot with eight microphones show that our method outperforms conventional methods by the signal-to-noise ratio of 2.7 dB.

The interactions of adsorbates with graphene have received increasing attention due to its importance in the development of applications involving graphene-based coatings. Here, we present a study of the adsorption of noble gases on pristine and nitrogen-doped graphene. Single-layer graphene samples were synthesized by chemical vapor deposition (CVD) and transferred to transmission electron microscopy (TEM) grids. Several noble gases were allowed to adsorb on the suspended graphene substrate at very low temperatures. Raman spectra show distinct frequency blue shifts in both the 2D and G bands, which are induced by gas adsorption onto high quality single layer graphene (1LG). These shifts, which we associate with compressive biaxial strain in the graphene layers induced by the noble gases, are negligible for nitrogen-doped graphene. Additionally, a thermal depinning transition, which is related to the desorption of a noble gas layer from the graphene surface at low temperatures (ranging from 20 to 35 K), was also observed at different transition temperatures for different noble gases. These transition temperatures were found to be 25 K for argon and 35 K for xenon. Moreover, we were able to obtain values for the compressive biaxial strain in graphene induced by the adsorbed layer of noble gases, using Raman spectroscopy. Ab initio calculations confirmed the correlation between the noble gas-induced strain and the changes in the Raman features observed.

Meteorological influences on dengue transmission in Pakistan

Objective: To identify the influences of local and regional climate phenomena on dengue transmission in Lahore District of Pakistan, from 2006 to 2014. Methods: Time-series models were applied to analyze associations between reported cases of dengue and climatic parameters. The coherence trend of regional climate phenomena(IOD and ENSO) was evaluated with wavelet analysis. Results: The minimum temperature 4 months before the dengue outbreak played the most important role in the Lahore District(P=0.03). A NINO 3.4 index 9 months before the outbreaks exhibited a significant negative effect on dengue transmission(P=0.02). The IOD exhibited a synchronized pattern with dengue outbreak from 2010 to 2012. The ENSO effect(NINO 3.4 index) might have played a more important role after 2012. Conclusions: This study provides preliminary results of climate influences on dengue transmission in the Lahore District of Pakistan. An increasing dengue transmission risk accompanied by frequent climate changes should be noted. Integrating the influences of climate variability into disease prevention strategies should be considered by public health authorities.

In secret image sharing schemes, all legal participants provide legitimate shared images and then they can extract the correct secret message. Recently, Wu et al. proposed a high quality data hiding secret sharing scheme with authentication ability. The major contribution of this scheme maintains good stego image quality while being able to verify secret message integrity. However, to ensure the process can work, the secret image’s pixel values larger than 250 must be changed to 250 for Wu’s scheme. Otherwise, extracting the secret image may fail. In other words, for a secret image, a few errors do not make the big difference but it could be distorted severely for some sensitive secrets. In order to improve this shortcoming, a secret image sharing scheme based on General Multi-Exploiting Modification Direction (GMEMD) data hiding technology will be proposed in this paper. According to simulation results and analysis, we can show that the stego image quality in Wu et al.’s scheme or our proposed scheme is larger than 43dB. We also demonstrate the authentication capability to find unauthorized participants. Furthermore, if all participants are legitimate, then the proposed scheme can extract the secret completely without any distortion. © Springer International Publishing Switzerland 2016.

An effect of tsunami to hotel occupancy: A case of Phuket, Thailand

As a popular city for global tourists, more than one third of the Phuket GPP depends on the hotel and restaurant sector. The 2004 Indian Ocean Tsunami caused a serious physical damage to hotels and a high cancellation of bookings in the post disaster period, which, in turn, led to most THB 3 billion drop of the hotel and restaurant sector income in 2005 in Phuket. In addition, many tourism facilities in Phuket suffered bankruptcy or a slump, because they started their business again immediately after the reconstruction phase, while tourists did not really come back. This paper is an initiative study of our research project to evaluate the effects of the 2004 Indian Ocean Tsunami on Hotel Occupancy, with a focus on the speed for the physical reconstruction and tourism market recovery. We collected the physical reconstruction period and the hotel occupancy recovery data of six hotels that located in the Patong Beach of Phuket from 2003 to 2017. Through calculation, the average of damage rate (i.e., unavailability of the rooms in this study) is 55.89%, with an average speed for the physical reconstruction to rebuild the rooms about 6.07% of the overall rooms per month. The quotient of these two values indicates that the reconstruction period is around 9.2 months. However, the average period for reconstruction and tourism recovery is about 20 months. There is an about 11 months' delay between that hotel and resorts have finished the reconstruction and the tourists start to visit Phuket as usual. Therefore, the local government, local tourist authority, and hotel entrepreneurs can consider these findings in order to prepare the recovery plan for tourism industry in the future tsunami.

This paper proposes a mapping between two product quality and software processes models used in the industry, the CERTICS Brazilian national model and the CMMI-DEV international model. The focus of this mapping is in the Technological Development Competence Area of CERTICS, which directs the response to the key question on whether 'the software is the result of technological development in the country'. The results of mapping are presented step by step, as well as the mapping review, which had the cooperation of one expert in CERTICS and CMMI-DEV models. Thus, this paper aims to correlate the structures of the two models in order to facilitate and reduce the implementation time and costs, and to stimulate the execution of multi-model implementations in software development enterprises. © 2016 IEEE.

Kidney dysfunction is a major cause of mortality, but its genetic architecture remains elusive. In this study, we conducted a multiancestry genome-wide association study in 2.2 million individuals and identified 1026 (97 previously unknown) independent loci. Ancestry-specific analysis indicated an attenuation of newly identified signals on common variants in European ancestry populations and the power of population diversity for further discoveries. We defined genotype effects on allele-specific gene expression and regulatory circuitries in more than 700 human kidneys and 237,000 cells. We found 1363 coding variants disrupting 782 genes, with 601 genes also targeted by regulatory variants and convergence in 161 genes. Integrating 32 types of genetic information, we present the "Kidney Disease Genetic Scorecard" for prioritizing potentially causal genes, cell types, and druggable targets for kidney disease.

Massive machine type communication (MTC) brings new challenges to next generation wide-area networks. Random Access Channel procedure (RACH) used in LTE-Advanced system for request delivery, for instance, is inefficient in handling massive number of concurrent access requests. The S-Aloha approach in RACH will lead to unsustainable delays and resource wastage due to collisions from concurrent access in massive MTC networks. To address this issue, we propose a distributed queue based MTC communication protocol that exploits multiple packet reception (MPR) capability of MTC devices to self-organize themselves into a logical queue in a distributed way such that the devices connect to BS depending on their positions in the queue. We derive the algorithm and present analysis of its performance in regard to delay and throughput. The algorithm behaves like S-Aloha when MTC traffic load is low and seamlessly and smoothly switches to a reservation based protocol during heavy traffic. From the simulation results, the proposed scheme exhibits better performance compared to conventional RACH procedure as it increases number of successful transmissions by 2.7 times and reduces both the average access delay and transmission failure probability by 20%.

Chemical vapor deposition (CVD) graphene would find great applications in industrial graphene-based electronics recently. Most importantly, the one-dimensional constriction of CVD graphene due to its grain boundaries and merged domains revealing interesting interference effects, like Aharonov-Bohm effect. Such interesting interference transport behavior can be revealed by low-temperature scanning gate microscopy (LT-SGM) and be numerical simulated about the dynamic transport point of view by mean-field Gross-Pitaevskii equation. In order to realize graphene-based quantum transport device, our results suggested that the supplying additional thermal current could flood into the grain boundaries and merged domains in one-dimensional quantum confined CVD graphene so as to suppress the interference effect, a great discovery for graphene-based materials coherent electronic devices. © 2016 IEEE.
