This paper presents a sound-based online localization method for an in-pipe snake robot with an inertial measurement unit (IMU). In-pipe robots, in particular, snake robots need online localization for autonomous inspection and for remote operator supports. The GPS is denied in a pipeline, and conventional odometry-based localization may deteriorate due to slippage and sudden unintended movements. By putting a microphone on the robot and a loudspeaker at the entrance of the pipeline, their distance can be estimated by measuring the time of flight (ToF) of a reference sound emitted from the loudspeaker. Since the sound propagation path in the pipeline is necessary for estimating the robot location, the proposed sound-based online localization method simultaneously estimates the robot location and the pipeline map by combining the distance obtained by the ToF and orientation estimated by the IMU. The experimental results showed that the error of the distance estimation was less than 7% and the accuracy of the pipeline map was more than 68.0%.

Chronic care manages long-term, progressive conditions, while acute care addresses short-term conditions. Chronic conditions increasingly strain health systems, which are often unprepared for these demands. This study examines the burden of conditions requiring acute versus chronic care, including sequelae. Conditions and sequelae from the Global Burden of Diseases Study 2019 were classified into acute or chronic care categories. Data were analysed by age, sex, and socio-demographic index, presenting total numbers and contributions to burden metrics such as Disability-Adjusted Life Years (DALYs), Years Lived with Disability (YLD), and Years of Life Lost (YLL). Approximately 68% of DALYs were attributed to chronic care, while 27% were due to acute care. Chronic care needs increased with age, representing 86% of YLDs and 71% of YLLs, and accounting for 93% of YLDs from sequelae. These findings highlight that chronic care needs far exceed acute care needs globally, necessitating health systems to adapt accordingly. © 2025. The Author(s).

This paper presents a 60 GHz CPW-fed patch antenna on multilayer LTCC- and LCP-based materials with new and compact AMC. The proposed antenna structure consists of top three layers of antenna and bottom three layers of AMC ground plane. First, a new and compact three-layer AMC is designed on both LTCC- and LCP-based substrates. The designed AMC is more compact and provides 37.5% higher in-phase bandwidth as compared to a state-of-the-art design. Then, a three-layer CPW-fed patch antenna is designed and optimized on LTCC- and LCP-based substrates on top of the three-layer AMC ground plane of the same material. We perform a gain-bandwidth comparative study of antennas on multilayer LTCC- and LCP-based substrates with AMC/PEC ground planes for 60 GHz. We observe that antennas on LCP-based substrate outperform those on LTCC-based substrate in terms of input impedance, bandwidth, and gains on both AMC and PEC ground planes, while antennas on LTCC-based substrate have smaller antenna and AMC dimensions.

We investigate the basin of attraction properties and its boundaries for chimera states in a circulant network of Hénon maps. It is known that coexisting basins of attraction lead to a hysteretic behaviour in the diagrams of the density of states as a function of a varying parameter. Chimera states, for which coherent and incoherent domains occur simultaneously, emerge as a consequence of the coexistence of basin of attractions for each state. Consequently, the distribution of chimera states can remain invariant by a parameter change, as well as it can suffer subtle changes when one of the basins ceases to exist. A similar phenomenon is observed when perturbations are applied in the initial conditions. By means of the uncertainty exponent, we characterise the basin boundaries between the coherent and chimera states, and between the incoherent and chimera states, respectively. This way, we show that the density of chimera states can be not only moderately sensitive but also highly sensitive to initial conditions. This chimera's dilemma is a consequence of the fractal and riddled nature of the basins boundaries. Coupled dynamical systems have been used to describe the behaviour of real complex systems, such as power grids, neuronal networks, economics, and chemical reactions. Furthermore, these systems can exhibit various kinds of interesting nonlinear dynamics, e.g. synchronisation, chaotic oscillations, and chimera states. The chimera state is a spatio-temporal pattern characterised by the coexistence of coherent and incoherent dynamics. It has been observed in a great variety of systems, ranging from theoretical and experimental arrays of oscillators, to in phenomena such as the unihemispheric sleep of cetaceans. We study the chimera state in a circulant network of Hénon maps, seeking to determine how the density of states in the network depends on the system parameters and the initial conditions. In recent years, service robots have tended to have the ability to move autonomously in an environment in which they co-exist with humans. Thus, the robots must engage in obstacle avoidance and arrive at the goal point. The potential method is one of the path planning methods for obstacle avoidance. Because pedestrian is moving obstacle, he/she may go outside of artificial potential in a similar method suggested by a previous study. However, if the robot avoids collision too securely, robot's performance is limited so a trade-off problem arises between collision avoidance and robot's performance. A potential method requires a function that allows a robot to plan an effective path without collision with pedestrian by predicting a pedestrian's next position during robot operation. In this study, we develop a robot navigation method according to the characteristics of pedestrian flow. We spread a repulsive potential that adapts the pedestrian potential equation based on the route estimation model. In the proposed method, the repulsive potential changes depending on the position or the velocity of the pedestrian. The robot plans a path without including unnecessary potential, according to the pedestrian's route estimation range. Compared with the previous potential method, wherein the potential field is distributed equally around a pedestrian the same way as a static obstacle, the proposed method enables the robot to plan an effective path with pedestrian characteristics. The proposed method's effectiveness is demonstrated through experiments.

There are several ways to deal with security issues of confidential data sent via the internet, including using cryptographic techniques and steganography. Steganography is the science and art of concealing information / messages in a media in such a way that its existence is not detected by other parties who are not entitled to the information. Instead, cryptography disguises the meaning of a message, but does not hide that there is a message because the file looks suspicious. The Steganography technique used here was End Of File (EOF). The EOF technique described how to add data or files at the end of the image file. For this technique, the size of data or files that will be hidden could be larger than the size of the image file. The hidden data will be inserted at the end of the file so that it will not affect the image. This steganography application is also equipped with a cryptographic function Data Encryption Standard (DES) at the time of insertion of data that functions as a generator code and encrypts data, so that the security of a data in the file is more protected and protected from those who are not entitled to know the data.

This paper proposes a novel driving-assistance system for manual wheelchairs with consideration of both uphill and downhill conditions. On an inclined road, there is a high risk of a wheelchair moving in a direction that the user does not intend. In our previous works, the user has driven our assistive wheelchair in the usual manner. Our proposed system estimates its user's intentions and passively works to complement their intentional force by negating the wheel traction that is generated by the road's inclination using only the servo brakes on each wheel. Nevertheless, in some cases, our system fails to assist the driving motion of its user because the user drives the wheelchair in several ways that depend upon the environmental condition, for example, during uphill or downhill driving. The required assistance is not constant according to the situation, and it is difficult to assist with one wheel-control algorithm. Therefore, in this study, we first investigate the required assistance condition according to the driving situation by conducting a preliminary experiment with wheelchair users. Considering the results of this investigation, we then propose a novel user interface that intuitively shows the system information and a wheel-control algorithm that selects a suitable wheel controller according to the driving situation.

Background: Experimental and epidemiological studies indicate an association between exposure to particulate matter (PM) air pollution and increased risk of type 2 diabetes. In view of the high and increasing prevalence of diabetes, we aimed to quantify the burden of type 2 diabetes attributable to PM_2·5 originating from ambient and household air pollution. Methods: We systematically compiled all relevant cohort and case-control studies assessing the effect of exposure to household and ambient fine particulate matter (PM_2·5) air pollution on type 2 diabetes incidence and mortality. We derived an exposure–response curve from the extracted relative risk estimates using the MR-BRT (meta-regression—Bayesian, regularised, trimmed) tool. The estimated curve was linked to ambient and household PM_2·5 exposures from the Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries, and Risk Factors Study 2019, and estimates of the attributable burden (population attributable fractions and rates per 100 000 population of deaths and disability-adjusted life-years) for 204 countries from 1990 to 2019 were calculated. We also assessed the role of changes in exposure, population size, age, and type 2 diabetes incidence in the observed trend in PM_2·5-attributable type 2 diabetes burden. All estimates are presented with 95% uncertainty intervals. Findings: In 2019, approximately a fifth of the global burden of type 2 diabetes was attributable to PM_2·5 exposure, with an estimated 3·78 (95% uncertainty interval 2·68–4·83) deaths per 100 000 population and 167 (117–223) disability-adjusted life-years (DALYs) per 100 000 population. Chemical vapor deposition (CVD) graphene would find great applications in industrial graphene-based electronics recently. Most importantly, the one-dimensional constriction of CVD graphene due to its grain boundaries and merged domains revealing interesting interference effects, like Aharonov-Bohm effect. Such interesting interference transport behavior can be revealed by low-temperature scanning gate microscopy (LT-SGM) and be numerical simulated about the dynamic transport point of view by mean-field Gross-Pitaevskii equation. In order to realize graphene-based quantum transport device, our results suggested that the supplying additional thermal current could flood into the grain boundaries and merged domains in one-dimensional quantum confined CVD graphene so as to suppress the interference effect, a great discovery for graphene-based materials coherent electronic devices.
