This paper describes an online 3D reconstruction system from stereo image sequences to obtain a dense local world model for robot navigation. The proposed method consists of three components: 1) stereo depth map calculation, 2) correspondence calculation in time sequential images by tracking raw image features, 3) 6DOF camera motion estimation by RANSAC and integrate depth map into 3D reconstructed model. We examined and evaluated our method in a motion capture environment for comparison. Finally experimental results of a humanoid robot H7 are denoted.

Active learning enables learners to actively engage in learning. Learning not only transfers material to students for learning, but also encourages greater mental engagement and more extensive student-student and student-instructor interaction than does a typical lecture class. Peer instruction (PI) engages students in active learning by achieving continuous instructor-student interaction in a physics lecture. However, the methodologies and the effectiveness of implementing PI for elementary school students have seldom been clarified. This study explores the possibility of adopting PI in an elementary science classroom. The research considerations of the study are as follows: (1) how wireless technology can enhance PI in elementary science classroom; (2) how a teacher can engage students in pre-class reading, and (3) whether elementary school students have sufficient social skills to perform a PI discussion? These questions are examined by observing how the PI pedagogical model worked with a wireless response system in elementary science classroom. Based on the observation, this study also proposes a way of improving the PI learning experience of elementary school students by adding experiments and observations during peer discussion to explain concepts and phenomena in physics.

An emergency response activity usually involves several teams from different organizations working cooperatively for the purpose of saving lives or properties. These teams have to make many decisions under time pressure to accomplish their goals. Most decisions require contextual knowledge coming from the emergency settings, including those which report the activities of other emergency teams. The goal of this paper is to describe a system which aims at storing and disseminating the contextual knowledge required by teams during the course of an emergency.

Currently, risk to privacy on the Internet poses a serious problem. So various personal information is treated online. This problem is also prevalent in distance learning systems since the existing privacy function is not sufficient to ensure safety. In this paper, we propose an architecture for privacy after considering a learner's communication for distance learning. We define privacy as a guaranteed learning method wherein a learner's information is treated as confidential. We have implemented the prototype and performed several experiments. We report the results in this paper.

We review the evidence from a number of surveys in which our NetLab has been involved about the extent to which the Internet is transforming or enhancing community. The studies show that the Internet is used for connectivity locally as well as globally, although the nature of its use varies in different countries. Internet use is adding on to other forms of communication, rather than replacing them. Internet use is reinforcing the pre-existing turn to societies in the developed world that are organized around networked individualism rather than group or local solidarities. The result has important implications for civic involvement.

A data model supporting the unification of the management of temporal XML document databases and version control, i.e., a Temporal Version Data Model (TVDM), is proposed. TVDM is temporally change-centric and represents the change between two consecutive versions by means of temporal delta (tDelta). A tDelta employs a temporal XML expression (tXex) which is an extension of ordinary XML elements by incorporation into them temporal as well as ordinary variables. In addition to valid time, TVDM introduces version time and associates it with each version. All versions including the base or the current one can be uniformly represented by tDeltas. Establishing the hierarchical order among XML elements is an essential function of XML query processing techniques. Although most XML documents have an associated DTD or XML schema, the document structure information has not been utilized efficiently in query processing techniques proposed so far. In this paper, we propose a novel technique that uses DTD or XML schema to improve the disk I/O complexity of XML query processing. We present a schema-based numbering scheme called SPIDER that incorporates both structure information and tag names extracted from the document structure descriptions. Given the tag name and the identifier of an element, SPIDER can determine the tag names and the identifiers of the ancestor elements without disk I/O. Based on SPIDER, we designed a mechanism called VirtualJoin that significantly reduces disk I/O workload for processing XML queries. Our experiments indicated that SPIDER outperforms the structural join techniques Stack-Tree and PathStack in XML query processing, especially for XML queries with heavy join workload and large data sets. © Springer-Verlag 2004.

Anonymity can protect a user's privacy, however it is hard to manage. It is hard to disclose anonymously. In addition, it is also hard to make people trust anonymous information. In this paper, we provide a key exchange scheme for not only anonymous, but also traceable disclosure. To be more precise, one who provides information can anonymously guarantee communication with particular person. Furthermore, his anonymity can be retained even if he discloses communication contents. These features can not realized by using signature scheme, or any other existing methods. Our method enable those features, and it can be useful when a group is dealing with confidential information. Copyright 2004 ACM.
