The search for employees aligned to the companies needs and with a high performance profile has led them to adopt several approaches for recruiting, selecting and evaluating in order to identify the candidates that best fit to the requirements of the position. There are many different approaches used but the companies, however, the decision about what is the most effective in terms of personnel performance management is a hard task. In this paper, a study based in data mining techniques is presented to help managers in this process. The common practice, used by the companies, is classify the candidates according the personal characteristics that are necessary to achieve a good performance using normally internal/personal characteristics more than external/environmental influences as determinant for the behaviors. The existing tools can be categorized according to their objectives, ranging from the selection process to the measurement of the performance achieved by the employees. Usually, these tools are not interconnected and the information generated by them does not allow a consistent analysis of the different stages of the employee and his professional evolution. It was mapped the different standards of leadership profile and performance results of the employees that work a specific company. Also, a classifier based in the Combinatorial Neural Model was built to find the relations between the personal characteristics and performance results. © 2012 The authors and IOS Press. In the last decades many research efforts have been devoted to improve electronic business among partner enterprises. The well succeeded results of these efforts led to the widespread use of tools like eCO-Framework (Macro-Economic Framework), EDI (Electronic Document Interchange) and SWIFT (Society for Worldwide Interbank Financial Telecommunication). More recently, the ebXML standard has been developed to expand the B2B (Business to Business) practice, assuring security at a low cost and enabling the commerce among small and medium businesses. However, ebXML provides only physical connection among the parts, lacking support for a business protocol capable of helping a negotiation. A well succeeded negotiation requires a dialog, involving customers and suppliers, product specification, requests, offers, requirements, all in a cycle of successive refinement of expectations. This paper aims at contributing to bridge this gap by means of a conceptual model for negotiation based on the client satisfaction cycle of Flores. Additionally, we demonstrate the electronic commerce route among the enterprises, describe some patterns that led to the arising of ebXML and that are part of its current core, specify the ebXML and propose some trends for the B2B commerce.

Currently, most of the information digitally available is presented in textual form and it is largely acknowledged that, in many fields, the advance of knowledge may strongly benefit from this source of information. The treatment of this vast amount of texts by means of Text Mining (TM) techniques has produced interesting information in fields like Competitive Intelligence and Bibliometry that need to make sense from textual descriptions of facts. In this paper we approach the problem of taxonomy generation from texts, a common need from a large set of scientific disciplines. Taxonomy generation refers to building a hierarchical structure that organizes concepts in a knowledge domain. We applied TM techniques to help experts in Pedology in building taxonomy from redundant soils descriptions. The motto of the application is the fact that, in the early eighties, different organizations mapped and described equivalent classes of soils from Brazilian savannas, generating redundant descriptions with different class labels. There were produced 28 soil maps that covered 4,101 descriptions of soil classes. This profusion of redundant soil descriptions clearly represents a Babel Tower that makes difficult tasks like environment management and food production. The proposed process is based in clustering analysis and runs on the soil descriptions, performing a successive refinement of the abstractions found in soil descriptions. The method builds a frame that shows, for each cluster formed, the prototype (a representative word vector) and the soil descriptions related to that cluster. The results have been analyzed by a team of experts as input information to the laborious reasoning process involved in building concepts from the semantic relations among the soil descriptions. Without a help like the present process, the experts would have to compare visually at least 4,101 x 4.100 x ... x 1 soil descriptions to define the clusters, what is much more laborious. © 2012 Springer-

Telemedicine is a very important area in medical field that is expanding daily motivated by many researchers interested in improving medical applications. In Brazil was started in 2005, in the State of Santa Catarina has a developed server called the CyclopsDCMServer, which the purpose to embrace the HDF for the manipulation of medical images (DICOM) using a distributed file system. Since then, many researches were initiated in order to seek better performance. Our approach for this server represents an additional parallel implementation in I/O operations since HDF version 5 has an essential feature for our work which supports parallel I/O, based upon the MPI paradigm. Early experiments using four parallel nodes, provide good performance when compare to the serial HDF implemented in the CyclopsDCMServer.

The customization of software process capability/maturity models (SPCMMs) to specific domains/sectors or development methodologies represents one of the most discussed and applied trends in ICT organizations. Nonetheless, little research appears to have been performed on how theoretically sound and widely accepted SPCMMs should be developed to high quality. The aim of this paper is therefore to elicit the state-of-the-art regarding the processes adopted to develop such models and to propose a systematic approach to support the customization of SPCMMs. Such an approach is developed based on ISO/IEEE standard development processes integrating knowledge Engineering techniques and experiences about how such models are currently developed in practice. Initial feedback from an expert panel indicates the usefulness and adequacy of the proposed method. © 2011 Springer-Verlag.

Advances in information technology have made possible ac-cumulation of large amount of data arising from information systems. This fact enabled the emergence and growth of research on Data Min-ing (DM), which aims primarily at identifying new and useful patterns in databases. Recently, software quality has received attention among areas of application. The quality of software has become an important issue for the maintenance and customer attraction for businesses and can be considered a competitive weapon. On the other hand, the quality of decision making in project management software is closely related to information available about the process of organizational development. This information can be stored in data warehouses to be analyzed and interpreted using techniques of DM. This paper describes an application of DM bases of quality metrics for software products, which are aimed at identifying the variables of the development process that would mostly affect the error rate during the phases of testing, approval, and production. The study of the target company has a high level of stand-ardization of processes. The results obtained in the models indicated a strong or moderate correlation of some variables of the process with product quality, which may be the target of management attention in order to: (i) improve the overall quality of the development process, (ii) Advances in knowledge-Based and Inreduce the error rate in the systems developed and (iii) promote greater customer satisfaction. © 2012 The authors and IOS Press. Since the nineties, Data Mining (DM) has shown to be a privileged partner in business by providing the organizations a rich set of tools to extract novel and useful knowledge from databases. In this paper, a DM application in the highly competitive market of educational services is presented. A model was built by combining a set of classifiers into a committee machine to predict the likelihood that a student who completed his/her second term will remain in the institution until *** model was applied to undergraduate student records in a higher education institution in Brasília, the capital of Brazil, and has shown to be predictive for evasion in a high accuracy. The unbiased selection of students with elevated evasion risk affords the institution the opportunity to devise mitigation strategies and preempt a decision by the student to evade. © 2011 Springer-Verlag.

Measuring and estimating are fundamental activities for the success of any project. In the software maintenance realm the lack of maturity, or even a low level of interest in adopting effective maintenance techniques and related metrics, has been pointed out as an important cause for the high costs involved. In this paper, data mining techniques are applied to provide a sound estimation for the time required to accomplish a maintenance task. Based on real-world data regarding maintenance requests, some regression models are built to predict the time required for each maintenance. Data on the team skill and the maintenance characteristics are mapped into values that predict better time estimations in comparison to the one predicted by the human expert. A particular finding from this research is that the time prediction provided by a human expert works as an inductive bias that improves the overall prediction accuracy of the models. Most organisations respond to internal and external challenges with different degrees of effectiveness. One of their biggest challenges is the ability to identify and respond appropriately to changes in their external environments. How effective are the organisational responses depend on the scope, timeliness and quality of the information available. However, such attributes depend not only from the quality of the sources accessed but also from the availability of tools for information extraction in timeliness and with adequate presentation. Considering the web one of the most comprehensive sources of information currently available, it is proposed in this paper an extensible software architecture for the instantiation of web monitoring tools. Such architecture includes generic classes that allow its permanent extensibility, according to the necessity of including new functionalities. A prototype is presented and a case study is described to illustrate its applicability. Copyright © 2011 Inderscience Enterprises Ltd.
