This work describes a methodology for generation of facial ground truth with synthetic faces. Our focus is to provide a way to generate accurate data for the evaluation of computer Vision algorithms, in terms of facial detection and its components. Such algorithms play a key role in face detection. We present a prototype in which we can generate facial animation videos using a 3D face models database, controlling face actions, illumination conditions and camera position. The facial animation platform allows us to generate animations with speech, facial expressions and eye motion, in order to approach realistic human face behavior. In addition, our model provides the ground truth of a set of facial feature points at each frame. As result, we are able to build a video database of synthetic human faces with ground truth, which can be used for training/evaluation of several algorithms for tracking and/or detection. We also present experiments using our generated videos to evaluate face, eye and mouth detection algorithms, comparing their performance with real video sequences. © 2010 IEEE.

Real-time localization of eyes and eyebrows in video sequences can find several applications in nowadays. However, this task is still a challenge, mainly if we consider images of low quality as those achieved by web cams. This paper describes a methodology to accurately detect meaningful feature points in eyes and eyebrows of people in frontal pose, in images captured by web cams. Also it discusses the mapping of the movement of the eyes of a real person to an avatar, in order to provide Performance Driven Animation (PDA). Furthermore, this paper presents obtained results and the limitations of the proposed methodology. © 2010 IEEE.

This paper describes a model for generating steering behaviors of groups of characters based on the biologically-motivated space colonization algorithm. This algorithm has been used in the past for generating leaf venation patterns and tree structures, simulating the competition for space between growing veins or branches. Adapted to character animation, this model is responsible for the motion control of characters providing robust and realistic group behaviors by adjusting just a few parameters. The main contributions are related with the robustness, flexibility and simplicity to control groups of characters. © 2009 Springer Berlin Heidelberg.

This paper presents a hair generation technique for cartoon and Anime characters. The main goal of this work is to provide a procedural generation technique, robust enough in order to create different types of hairs. We propose a parametric model that can produce diversity of obtained results through parameters variation. The model is organized in three steps: firstly, the strands generation, followed by positioning them in the head of the characters. Finally, the third step is responsible for providing cartoon rendering, including common characteristics in cartoon shading, as the black edges and solid colors. Visual inspection of obtained results indicate that generated hairs are coherent with expected in terms of visual aspects. © 2009 IEEE.

Diagrams play an important role in human problem solving. In response to a challenging assignment, three students produced diagrams and subsequent verbal protocols that offer insight into human cognition. The diversity and richness of their response, and their ability to address the task via diagrams, provide an incisive look at the role diagrams play in the development of expertise. This paper recounts how their diagrams led and misled them, and how the diagrams both explained and drove explanation. It also considers how this process might be adapted for a computer program. © Springer-Verlag 2002.

The representation of a real scenario through a 3D virtual environment populated by autonomous agents has several applications, such as games or animation movies. Such representation can be a difficult and complex task, since natural scenarios are composed by forms with a lot of details that should be reproduced realistically in the virtual world. Moreover, virtual people should understand and consider the virtual world for navigation similarly to real people. In this paper we describe a model to provide motion of groups of characters based on terrain reasoning in 3D virtual worlds. The model starts with the terrain generation process using height maps in a pseudo-infinite world, followed by the simulation of characters movement generated through an space colonization algorithm. Finally, the visualization of characters motion in the 3D terrain can be produced.

The research in the field of ergonomics can contribute to the design process of Assistive Technologies using objective and subjective data measurements. The auxiliary crutches are assistive devices commonly used in the process of rehabilitation after lower-extremity injuries. However, for many subjects, walking with crutches in not an easy and comfortable task, as the loads on the upper limbs are substantial and expose the users to potentially harmful long-term effects. In this way, the objective of this study was, first, to report the evaluation of the user-crutch interface by using an objective measurement of the subjects’ muscular activity and exertion perception, and to discuss how objective data measured from the subjects can contribute for the design of the interface. Eleven able-bodied subjects participated. The test protocol consisted of 3 trials of walking with crutches, each one with a different hand diameter, namely 20 mm, 32 mm and 40 mm. Surface electromyography of forearms muscles was collected, and perceived exertion was measured using the Borg’s Scale. The mean of maximum EMG values showed that the highest values activity happened in the extensor digitorum muscle using the largest handles. However, the smallest handles increase electromyography activity in the flexor digitorum superficialis muscle. Statistically significant difference was found between the smaller and the larger handle diameter. The analysis of exertion perception did not show statistical difference in any of the situations investigated. Handle diameter was shown to be a factor affecting the biomechanics of the walking with crutches. In addition, ergonomic evaluation can provide objective measurements that, ultimately, May be applied in the improvement of user-product interface.

In this paper we present a platform called VhCVE, in which relevant issues related to Collaborative Virtual Environments applications are integrated. The main goal is to provide a framework where participants can interact with others by voice and chat. Also, manipulation tools such as a mouse using computer Vision and Physics are included, as well as rendering techniques (e.g. light sources, shadows and weather effects). In addition, avatar animation in terms of face and body motion are provided. Results indicate that our platform can be used as a interactive virtual world to help communication among people. © 2009 IEEE.

Career planning at the organizational level must be translated into career planning at the individual employee level. Performance appraisal can be used more broadly so that it can be the main tool for companies in employee career planning. The purpose of this study is to measure how much influence the Performance Evaluation of Career Planning from employees who have occupied managerial levels goes to the next career level. In this paper, analysis of individual employee performance is carried out using the Spider Plot model. The results of analyzing individual performance from managers in different units can explain quickly and easily the appearance of the Spider Plot diagram. So, it is expected that individual career planning can be easily mapped through performance appraisal so that it can be used in career planning. © 2019 IOP Publishing Ltd. All rights reserved.

In the realm of music AI, arranging rich and structured multi-track accompaniments from a simple lead sheet presents significant challenges. Such challenges include maintaining track cohesion, ensuring long-term coherence, and optimizing computational efficiency. In this paper, we introduce a novel system that leverages prior modelling over disentangled style factors to address these challenges. Our method presents a two-stage process: initially, a piano arrangement is derived from the lead sheet by retrieving piano texture styles;subsequently, a multi-track orchestration is generated by infusing orchestral function styles into the piano arrangement. Our key design is the use of vector quantization and a unique multi-stream Transformer to model the long-term flow of the orchestration style, which enables flexible, controllable, and structured music generation. Experiments show that by factorizing the arrangement task into interpretable sub-stages, our approach enhances generative capacity while improving efficiency. Additionally, our system supports a variety of music genres and provides style control at different composition hierarchies. We further show that our system achieves superior coherence, structure, and overall arrangement quality compared to existing baselines. © 2024 Neural information processing systems foundation.
