The new biodiesohol for single cylinder diesel engine

Living in the world that petroleum is depleting and environmental issue is concerned, alternative energy has become interesting for everyone. This paper, hence, proposes a new alternative called "biodiesohol". The fuel can be produced easily using microemulsion technique, when crude vegetable oil's viscosity can be reduced by mean of mixing the oil with proper amounts of surfactants and co-surfactants and then mixing with conventional diesel. In this study, jatropha oil was blended with different ratio of surfactant and co-surfactant first in order to find the suitable composition when the homogeneous microemulsion phase was allowed to form. After that, the blend was again mixed with diesel at the concentrations of 5%, 10% and 20% by volume. Finally, a single cylinder engine was used to evaluate the fuel in terms of performance and emission quality. It can be concluded that the biodiesohol can be comparable to normal diesel with better emission quality. © 2013 CAFET-INNOVA TECHNICAL SOCIETY.

This study analyzes the impact of climate change on maize production through 2030 with production functions for two important maize-producing regions in China: the Northeast region and the Southwest region. Variations in geographic, climatic, and socioeconomic conditions within the large country imply, however, that the impacts on maize production will likely be the opposite for the two regions. This finding challenges the prevalent view that the climate change has a universally negative effect on Chinese agriculture and implies that a higher flexibility of maize producing timing and a better regional adaptation to climate change in Southwest region could offset or even to outweigh the potential reduction of maize production in the Northeast region. It suggests that advanced inter-regional contracts and cooperation and of policies to stabilize regional agricultural labour force could be a cost-efficient risk mitigation strategy to mitigate the potential reduction of overall national maize production.

The prediction of slope failures and landslides and the prevention of resultant damages require the establishment of sound slope behavior monitoring technique. Recently, the measurement technique greatly progresses, for example by using measurement equipment called MEMS (Micro Electro Mechanical Systems) utilizing nanotechnology and vision metrology. However, in the measurement for rock slopes, it is difficult to estimate slope behavior from measurement results because every risky location of a rock slope has a specific failure mode, and we cannot fully avoid or minimize the damage caused by slope hazards. This paper presents an example of monitoring of rock slopes using a combination of state-of-the-art instrumentation using MEMS technology and the warning criterion simulated by DDA analysis. This paper argues that the proposed system can serve as an effective method to eliminate slope hazards Asian countries are facing. © 2013 Taylor & Francis Group.

To investigate the genetic basis of type 2 diabetes (T2D) to high resolution, the GoT2D and T2D-GENES consortia catalogued variation from whole-genome sequencing of 2,657 European individuals and exome sequencing of 12,940 individuals of multiple ancestries. Over 27M SNPs, indels, and structural variants were identified, including 99% of low-frequency (minor allele frequency [MAF] 0.1-5%) non-coding variants in the whole-genome sequenced individuals and 99.7% of low-frequency coding variants in the whole-exome sequenced individuals. Each variant was tested for association with T2D in the sequenced individuals, and, to increase power, most were tested in larger numbers of individuals (>80% of low-frequency coding variants in ~82 K Europeans via the exome chip, and ~90% of low-frequency non-coding variants in ~44 K Europeans via genotype imputation). The variants, genotypes, and association statistics from these analyses provide the largest reference to date of human genetic information relevant to T2D, for use in activities such as T2D-focused genotype imputation, functional characterization of variants or genes, and other novel analyses to detect associations between sequence variation and T2D.

Amphibians show a variety of reproductive modes and strategies. The cyclicity and continuity of reproduction can often be predicted from the annual gonadosomatic index trends in a species specific manner. This research aims to document the female and male gonadosomatic index profiles and to ascertain the reproductive cyclicity or continuity of Fejervarya lirnnocharis （Anura： Ranidae） caught in Mac Sot, Tak Province, Thailand. Frogs were collected monthly between November 2007 and October 2009 in rice fields and their surrounding areas in the study site. For each frog, total weight and ovarian/testicular weight were measured to obtain the female and male gonadosomatic index. The number of female individuals with mature eggs （postvitellogenic eggs） was also counted. The results showed that female frogs had two main surges of increased GSI in March and September of 2008. Alternatively, male frogs showed a more gradual increase and decrease in gonadosomatic index, thus the index remaining high throughout the year. This study concluded that while F. limnocharis in this area is essentially a continuous breeder, it is more optimized for a cyclic reproduction mode with two breeding cycles during the rainy season.
