Genji-firefly has been one of the key symbols of rural environmental conservation. The species lives underwater as larvae, in the soil when they pupate, and emerges on the ground as adults. Because the habitat conditions of larvae and adults differ greatly, the habitat requirement of Genji-firefly must be clarified over a wide range from instream to the surrounding riparian environment. In this study, we developed a habitat suitability model for Genji-firefly by relating the number of individuals to local landscape features surveyed in a small river in an agricultural watershed. For habitat modelling, Random Forests, a well-known highly predictive machine learning method, was used to model species distributions and to extract quantitative information on their ecological characteristics. As a result, a good agreement was found between observed and modelled number of individuals, although some issues still remain for the test data. We were able to extract local landscape features that characterize the habitat suitability of adult firefly. In future, we plan to deepen our habitat suitability assessment by taking into account uncertainties such as noise originated from absent data.

Vertical green systems (VGS) are expected to mitigate outdoor heat stress through a transpiration cooling effect. There is a lack of knowledge on how VGS influence outdoor thermal comfort, particularly focusing on energy flux. This study quantifies the outdoor cooling effects of VGS, and distinguishes the energy flux between them and outdoor urban spaces. In addition, we discuss their cooling efficiency. Outdoor experiments were conducted during the hot summer period on building facades in city. Our study on VGS focused on the measurement of climatic variables, surface temperatures of plant leaves (Fatsia japonica), net radiation, and estimating transpiration and evaporation. The surface temperature of VGS were up to 4.3 °C higher than those of high albedo walls, while the reflected radiations (short and long-wave radiation) were 120 w/m2 lower than albedo walls during the day. The mean radiant temperature (MRT) of VGS was 3.02 °C lower than the high albedo wall during daytime, except in the case of shaded areas (0.45 °C). We confirmed that the cooling efficiency of transpiration was 7.38 times more effective than evaporation from soil without plants. Therefore, VGS is efficient in terms of long-term heat reduction and can be an effective strategy to mitigate outdoor heat stress. © 2023, The Authors. All rights reserved.

Monetary authorities globally have studied central bank digital currency (CBDC) for wholesale and retail applications since the 1990s. Besides countering private cryptocurrencies' influence, central banks have also explored other benefits of CBDC, such as improving their financial oversight, enhancing digital payment systems, and reducing transaction fees and friction. For several years, the Bank of Thailand has also invested in research and development of CBDC, including retail use cases. However, an optimized design for an official launch of a retail CBDC in Thailand has yet to be determined, resembling fragmented progress observed among other central banks. This research has leveraged disruptive innovation theory to provide a fresh perspective on retail CBDC as potentially disruptive financial innovations. Additionally, it has proposed an open innovation-based methodology to determine industry preferences concerning twelve design considerations for retail CBDC and their impact on nine indicators of disruptive innovation. Data has been collected and analyzed from 98 respondents outside the Bank of Thailand, all possessing relevant expertise or experience in electronic payments. Crosstab and logistic regression analyses have indicated that retail CBDC in Thailand could embark on a disruptive innovation trajectory by adhering to defined design choices. Significantly, entering a new detached market has been identified as the most promising entry point, accompanied by explicit recommendations on nine out of twelve design considerations. © 2025 The Authors

Nature-based solutions (NBS) are actions to protect, sustainably manage, or restore natural ecosystems. They are increasingly recognized worldwide as a key strategy for sustainable development, integrating climate change adaptation and mitigation and biodiversity conservation. NBS is fundamental to the quality of life of residents, and urban planning often includes strategies that are directly or indirectly related to greening. Although numerous studies have been conducted to quantitatively evaluate the benefits of NBS, analysis of the potential effect of NBS remains insufficient. Therefore, we developed a spatial decision-making support model that optimizes the location of NBS on multiple effects (biomass density, urban heat stress mitigation, and landscape connectivity) using a Non-Sorting dominated Genetic Algorithm-II (NSGA-II). Potential was assessed by comparing the NBS plan considering co-benefits with NBS strategy scenarios focused on individual objectives connectivity, biomass density, heat stress based scenario(CBS, BBS, and HBS). The model was applied to Suwon City, South Korea, demonstrating the potential of an integrated approach to maximize co-benefits simultaneously. The analysis revealed a trade-off between NBS benefits and implementation costs, with performance improvement in one objective often leading to decreased performance in others. Correlation analysis revealed significant positive correlations among the three objectives, with heat stress showing the lowest correlation. Simulations under four distinct scenarios highlighted the diverse potential arrangements of NBS and their effects. An integrated strategy demonstrated a consistently high overall value (a 221% improvement), which proved to be the most efficient approach when considering all aspects collectively. This study underscores the potential benefits of integrating multiple objectives into urban green space planning, thereby providing valuable insights for sustainable urban development.

Urban greening is critical for sustainable urban development, climate change mitigation, and biodiversity conservation. However, the effectiveness of urban greening varies depending on the specific goals (e.g., enhancing biodiversity, reducing urban heat, or both) and their spatial implementation. To address the spatial variability in the effectiveness of greening, we propose a spatial decision support model based on the non-dominated sorting genetic algorithm-II (NSGA-II). This model aims to optimize urban greening locations to maximize biomass density, mitigate urban heat stress, and improve landscape connectivity. Applied to Suwon City, South Korea, the model's effectiveness was evaluated against a business-as-usual (BAU) scenario across four scenarios: connectivity-based, biomass density-based, heat stress-based, and an integrated-based scenario. The integrated approach, balancing trade-offs between ecological benefits and implementation costs, outperformed the BAU scenario by 8.84 %. Despite highlighting a weaker correlation with heat stress mitigation, this outcome indicates significant improvements in biomass density and landscape connectivity. Our findings underscore the necessity of an integrated planning approach to urban greening, as it can contribute toward attaining urban development goals. Additionally, by proposing an app-based model for policymakers, our outputs should enable the reconciliation of multiple environmental objectives in urban landscapes. © 2025 Elsevier Ltd

Global climate change is considered an irreversible problem, which might directly or indirectly affect all the organisms and ecosystems on the earth and the world has to struggle with. Plants having no effective movement mechanism are the group that global climate change will affect the most. In order to minimize the species and population losses, it is important to estimate the changes in the available distribution areas of species and to ensure the migration mechanism, which the species will need, by the hand of humans. The present study aims to reveal how potential distribution areas of fir, which is among the significant tree species of Turkey and significant portion of global distribution of which is in Turkey, will change from an altitudinal aspect because of the climate change. The results achieved showed that, because of the effects of global climate change, the suitable distribution areas of Abies nordmanniana subsp. nordmanniana will significantly decrease especially at high altitudes and that suitable distribution areas of Abies nordmanniana subsp. equi-trojani will reduce at altitudes higher than 1400 m but increase generally at the altitudes between 200 and 600 m. Moreover, suitable distribution areas of Abies cilicica will shift towards higher altitudes. © 2022, The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

Cyclic shear loading test and strength evaluation on roof bearings

In 2011, some roof bearings of gymnasiums suffered severe damage by the pacific coast of Tohoku earthquake. Typical damage was the elongation and break of the anchor bolts or crush of base mortar. Since gymnasiums are used as shelters for the neighboring residents in earthquake disasters, damage prevention of roof bearings are required. Roof bearings are the connections between the lower RC frame and the steel roof. They are similar to conventional steel exposed column bases. However, the dominant stress and the mechanism to resist the horizontal forces of the roof bearings are different from those of steel exposed column bases. The dominant stress of steel exposed column bases is axial and bending stress while shear stress of the anchor bolts is dominant for roof bearings since the vertical load is extremely lower than that in steel exposed column bases in ordinary buildings. In present paper, the full-scale cyclic shear loading tests of roof bearings were carried out to investigate the fracture behavior of roof bearings and the restoring force characteristics were also evaluated. Three different height (20mm, 50mm or 100mm) of the base mortar were used to compare the fracture behavior and the restoring force characteristics. Moreover, the friction tests were conducted to investigate the friction coefficient between the base mortar and base plate. It was found from the results of friction tests that the friction coefficient between the base mortar and the base plate was about 0.5. This result agrees very well with the friction coefficient given in the AIJ recommendation for Design of Connections in Steel Structures. The fracture behavior and the restoring force characteristics of roof bearings are summarized as follows. The anchor bolts were leaned after the base plate contacted the anchor bolts. After that, the base mortar cracked since the deformed anchor bolts pushed it out. After the tests, the base mortar was crushed especially outside of anchor bolts. When th

At present, the affluent, medical and wellness tourism industry in Thailand is facing challenges in global tourism competitiveness that includes assessment of the country's potential and readiness to become the leading in wellness tourism and sustainable restoration of world-class quality. This research developed indicators for assessing the potential of wellness tourism destinations, in which affluent, medical and wellness tourism is among the main target industries that are important to the economic development of Thailand. This research was preliminarily conducted by using systematic literature review. The results of the study reveal that potential wellness tourism destination assessment in the Thailand context consists of seven factors and 50 indicators. Based on the results, recommendations for future research are provided. In an empirical research, a questionnaire was used as the tool for data collection and component analysis confirmation. Then, the generated factors and indicators were used to develop innovative systems for assessing the potential of wellness tourism destinations and to be tested on stakeholders of the same in Thailand.
