The purpose of this study is to suggest a physical comfort factor of Korean traditional residences called Hanok, and to make a composition of the monitoring system for comfort factors. For this study Hanok's degree of integrative comfort was analyzed and comfort performance has been classified. Comfort performance was divided into two large comfort performance categories: psychology cognitive factors and physical perception factors. In this research, composition of monitoring system for physical comfort performance is a key goal, so this study proposed a method of the monitoring system for physical perception factors. As a result, it is turned that the proposed system would have a pretty good applicability to the field.

The purpose of this study is to suggest a standard comfort features presented on the consideration of the traditional houses, called Hanok in Korea. In addition, this paper is to build a diversified, integrated evaluation system considering traditional, aesthetic and psychological values. For this study, the degree of integrative comfort was analyzed and comfort performance has been classified. Comfort performance was divided into two large comfort performance categories: physical and psychological. For this research, survey data from residents were collected for evaluating psychological comfort. Existing relevant studies about comfort evaluation system were driven to reveal the quantitative comfort elements of the suggested classification system. This study also contains a qualitative in-depth analysis of the comfort factor and will examine the effect of those elements. This study has finally proposed an integrated comfort evaluation system that can evaluate over inhabitants of the interior environmental conditions and surveys. As a result, the proposed system will have to be turned on quite good applicability in the field.

Acoustic Absorption Characteristics of Perforated Thin Plate with Air Jets and Cavity

The present paper focuses on the effect of air jets through a perforated thin plate on the characteristics of an acoustic absorption coefficient. We measured the flow rate, internal pressure, acoustic pressure, and transfer function by using an improved acoustic impedance tube. The normal incidence absorption coefficient was calculated from the measured transfer function using transfer function methods. As a result, the frequency characteristics of the acoustic absorption coefficient against the frequency showed a maximum value at the local frequency. The peak frequency of the acoustic absorption coefficient depended on the thickness of the background air space and the thickness of the perforated plate. As the flow rate increased through the micropores, the peak level of the acoustic absorption coefficient also increased until a flow rate of 80?l /min. As the flow rate further increased, the peak level of the acoustic absorption coefficient decreased and that of the high frequency band increased.

Recent researches propose the integration of performance analysis to early stages of the design process in order to obtain the building's best final performance (Kolarevric;Malkawi, 2005;Holzer, 2010;Oxman, 2007). Thus, choosing the appropriate set of solutions and digital tools to develop this task is of high complexity and responsibility. The main objective of this paper is to identify and characterize the evaluation of different performances in social housing design stage, through the development of a model containing appropriate abstractions, for the representation of valid and accurate analytical data as inputs and outputs to specific simulations. This study was developed as field study involving experts in the area of thermal comfort, acoustic comfort, lighting comfort, materials conservation, water conservation and accessibility. The results show strengths and difficulties for integrating performance analysis focusing the information modelling and interoperability between computational simulations. A sequence for performing simulations considering inter-influences is proposed. This paper contributes with the characterization of the ideal information model to be use in different simulation tools, during the design stage of social housing solutions;promoting quality improvement related to social housing and the use of BIM (Building Information Modeling). Following the physical analogy with diffusion of particles in a scattering medium, and assuming sound particles travel along straight lines at sound speed, the room-acoustic diffusion model has emerged as geometrical/statistical room-acoustic prediction tools based on the assumption that the room(s) under consideration contains scattering objects that uniformly scatter the sound particles. In this paper the validity of the room-acoustics diffusion model is investigated using scale-models of a coupled-volume system. This work investigates the valid ranges and limitations of the diffusion model by systematic changes in aperture sizes of coupled-volume systems for comparisons between the acoustical scale-models and the room-acoustic diffusion models. In these physical and numerical models, the sound source and receiver positions relative to the aperture are also investigated.

This paper will discuss conceptual fundamentals that will support a thesis research. This thesis discusses the incorporation of BIM into the digital architecture design process and proposes to analyze an alternative use of performative architectural design for conceptual design. It proposes a multi-performance-based generation design model as integrated practice encouraging intelligent modeling and developing new architect skills, in BIM era, compared to traditional digital design models. The chosen object of study are preliminary studies for public school projects for the state of São Paulo, in Brazil considering the FDE Education Agency regulations and rules. © Civil-Comp Press, 2009.

Subjective experiment was conducted to identify the relationship between brightness sensation and the percentage of the subjectswho turned on the ceiling luminaire in an experimental room which introduced diffused direct sunlight by using reflecting panelbeside the window. Brightness sensation judged by the subjects just after they entered the room with diffused direct sunlight became higher than that without diffused direct sunlight. However diffused direct sunlight introduced into the room had no significant effects on the subjects' brightness sensation judged after they stayed in the room for 5 minutes. It was also identified that in the case when the illuminance on the desk was higher than about 200-400 lx, half of the subjects turned off the ceiling luminaire.

The plasma membrane Na＋/H＋-antiporter salt overly sensitive1 （SOS1） from the halophytic Arabidopsis-relative Thellungiella halophila （ThSOS1） shows conserved sequence and domain structure with the orthologous genes from Arabidopsis thaliana and other plants. When expression of ThSOSt was reduced by RNA interference （RNAi）, pronounced characteristics of salt-sensitivity were observed. We were interested in monitoring altered transcriptional responses between Thellungiella wild type and thsost-4, a representative RNAi line with particular emphasis on root responses to salt stress at 350 mmol/L NaCI, a concentration that is only moderately stressful for mature wild type plants. Transcript profiling revealed several functional categories of genes that were differently affected in wild-type and RNAi plants. Down-regulation of SOS1 resulted in different gene expression even in the absence of stress. The pattern of gene induction in the RNAi plant under salt stress was similar to that of glycophytic Arabidopsis rather than that of wild type Thellungiella. The RNAi plants failed to down-regulate functions that are normally reduced in wild type Thellungiella upon stress and did not up-regulate functions that characterize the Thellungiella salt stress response. Metabolite changes observed in wild type Thellungiella after salt stress were less pronounced or absent in RNAi plants. Transcript and metabolite behavior suggested SOS1 functions including but also extending its established function as a sodium transporter. The down-regulation of ThSOS1 converted the halophyte Thellungiella into a salt-sensitive plant.

The WATERS Network (WATer and Environmental Research Systems Network) will be an integrated real-time distributed observing system which will enable academic and government scientists, engineers, educators, and practitioners to advance effective management of our nation's water resources by understanding human interactions with water and the natural and built environment. WATERS will provide easily accessible real time environmental data as well as analysis tools to engineers, scientists, educators, K- graduate students and policymakers so they can better understand how water quantity, quality and related components of the hydrologic cycle are impacted by natural and human influences. The WATERS strategic plan will be completed by July 2007 and requires constituent input. This paper describes the draft Conceptual Design and the Education Plan of WATERS Network. This paper will highlight the potential impact of WATERS on undergraduate and graduate environmental engineering education in order to elicit input from the environmental engineering education community on how WATERS Network could better meet the future needs of undergraduate and graduate students and educators.
