Air quality network data in China and South Korea show very high year-round mass concentrations of coarse particulate matter (PM) between 2.5 μm and 10 μm aerodynamic diameter, as inferred by the difference between PM10 and PM2.5 observations. This coarse PM averages 47 μg m-3 in the North China Plain (NCP) region in 2015-2019 and 21 μg m-3 in the Seoul Metropolitan Area (SMA). It is dominantly contributed by urban fugitive dust, rather than by natural dust as is often presumed. Concentrations decreased by 21% from 2015 to 2019 and further dropped abruptly in 2020 due to COVID-19 reductions in construction and vehicle traffic. This anthropogenic coarse PM is generally not included in air quality models but acts as a sink of nitric acid (HNO3), thus affecting fine particulate nitrate which is a major air quality concern in China and South Korea. GEOS-Chem model simulation of surface and aircraft observations from the KORUS-AQ campaign over the SMA in May-June 2016 shows that consideration of anthropogenic coarse PM largely resolves the previous model overestimate of PM1 nitrate. Anthropogenic coarse PM in the model increases the sensitivity of PM2.5 nitrate to ammonia (NH3) emission in winter. In summer, anthropogenic coarse PM directly affects PM2.5 nitrate by HNO3 uptake, and we find that the decrease of anthropogenic coarse PM over 2015-2019 offset the PM2.5 nitrate reductions expected from decreasing NOx and NH3 emissions. The complexity and difficulties of Kurdish speaker detection among its several dialects are investigated in this work. Because of its great phonetic and lexical differences, Kurdish with several dialects including Kurmanji, Sorani, and Hawrami offers special challenges for speaker recognition systems. The main difficulties in building a strong speaker identification system capable of precisely identifying speakers across several dialects are investigated in this work. To raise the accuracy and dependability of these systems, it also suggests solutions like sophisticated machine learning approaches, data augmentation tactics, and the building of thorough dialect-specific corpus. The results show that customized strategies for every dialect together with cross-dialect training greatly enhance recognition performance. © 2025, CC BY.

Nanophotonic platforms such as metasurfaces, achieving arbitrary phase profiles within ultrathin thickness, emerge as miniaturized, ultracompact and kaleidoscopic optical vortex generators. However, it is often required to segment or interleave independent sub-array metasurfaces to multiplex optical vortices in a single nano-device, which in turn affects the device’s compactness and channel capacity. Here, inspired by phyllotaxis patterns in pine cones and sunflowers, we theoretically prove and experimentally report that multiple optical vortices can be produced in a single compact phyllotaxis nanosieve, both in free space and on a chip, where one meta-atom may contribute to many vortices simultaneously. The time-resolved dynamics of on-chip interference wavefronts between multiple plasmonic vortices was revealed by ultrafast time-resolved photoemission electron microscopy. Our nature-inspired optical vortex generator would facilitate various vortex-related optical applications, including structured wavefront shaping, free-space and plasmonic vortices, and high-capacity information metaphotonics. To achieve smart manufacturing in Industry 4.0 for steel industry (or Steel 4.0), this paper proposes a smart steel manufacturing framework, where a deep learning-based automatic identification tracking method for steel products is developed. Automatically online tracking and identifying steel products on a production line is essential for smart manufacturing management since those products might be frequently moved and processed everywhere on the product flow. Existing approaches usually rely upon marking or embedding a series of identification codes on the steel surfaces. However, steel-making is usually processed under a very high temperature environment, making it difficult to well embed the identification codes with acceptable quality for further automatically online recognizing them. To tackle this problem, this paper presents a vision-based automatic identification tracking method without needing to embed any identification codes onto the steel product surfaces. The key idea is to utilize the essential identity of a steel product without extrinsic information embedded, achieved by automatically and deeply learning visual features from the steel image. The presented preliminary results have verified the efficiency of the proposed method. © Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2019.

Attitude control adjustment of the Amphibious Spherical Robot (ASR) moving on-land is a relatively mature technology, but there are few related types of research on Multi- Degree-of-Freedom (MDOF) for underwater attitude control algorithm. This paper developed a novel structure to control the underwater motion posture and proposed a fuzzy algorithm to control the internal water tank level so that the robot can realize the function of floating and diving. The control algorithm is especially based on underwater environment and we also take a detailed mechanical analysis of the water tank structure, the direction of the robot can be adjusted in real-time according to the water level with the fuzzy control algorithm and the purpose of the three dimensional underwater movement can be achieved. At the end of this paper, the underwater experiment is performed to analyze the structure and algorithm to give the most reasonable suggestion for three-dimensional underwater movement.

This study aims at revealing the effect of composition on mechanical and antibacterial properties of hydroxyapatite/gray Titania coating for biomedical applications. HAp is a bioceramic material used as a plasma-sprayed coating to promote osseointegra-tion of femoral stems. Biomaterial coatings are fabricated mostly using atmospheric plasma spray (APS). However, the conventional plasma spray process requires hydrox-yapatite powder with good flow, and to prepare such free-flowing powder, agglomer-ation, such as spray drying, fusing, and crushing is used. Therefore, it is impossible to spray nanopowder using conventional methods. Here, we designed a suspension-feeding system to feed nanoparticles using a liquid carrier. Suspension plasma spray (SPS) successfully deposited homogeneous HAp/Gray Titania coating with less poros-ity on the surface of titanium substrates. The microstructure of coatings with differ-ent compositions was then characterized using scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, and Raman spectroscopy to identify the crystal structure. All results con-sistently demonstrated that SPS could transform Ti2 O3 into TiO2 with mixed Magneli phases, such as Ti4 O7 and Ti3 O5, which usually show photocatalytic activity. Inter-a high concentration of TiO2. Antibacterial test for *** under LED light re-vealed that SPSed HAp/Gray Titania coating could significantly enhance antibacterial properties. The possible underlying mechanism of enhanced antibacterial properties can be attributed to increased Magneli phases and better bacterial adhesion caused by hydrophilic properties due to submicron size particles. In this paper, the lifting platform structure of the father robot and the development of the insect-inspired biomimetic underwater microrobot are presented. The objective is to decrease the load of microrobot and realize more functions. In previous researchers, the platform of the father robot is fixed, which is not conducive to adopt and release the son robot. The structure of the lifting platform can effectively solve the problem in theory. The insect-inspired microrobot used wood which has high hydrophilism. It causes the body of microrobot increased weight and short-term works. The fillable structure with waterproof character which is made by a 3D printer. The new structure also can be changed weight for achieving different functions underwater efficiently. Then, two kinds of communication between the light source and microrobot like chasing rotation and fixed distance chasing are described in order to prove the feasibility of the software. In all these cases, experimental results show the performance of the microrobot.

In thinking about human-computer interface, it is important to know how human beings recognize, judge and act. Therefore, Card et al. devised a model of human cognitive processing process called Model Human Processor (MHP). However, this MHP predicts processing time from empirical rules, and is not much considered from the aspect of brain activity. In this study, we focused on readiness potential (RP), which is a characteristic brain wave, and verified MHP from the aspect of brain activity by measuring Electroencephalography (EEG) when performing basic user performance. Experimental results show that MHP can be roughly explained from the aspect of RP, which is a characteristic brain activity.

In this study, a statistical estimation of S-N curves for high-strength steels from their static mechanical properties was attempted. First, the fatigue data of high-strength steels were extracted from the "Database on fatigue strength of metallic materials" published by the Society of Materials science, Japan (JSMS), and the S-N curves of respective steels were determined from the JSMS standard, that is, the "Standard evaluation method of fatigue reliability for metallic materials: Standard regression method of S-N curve". The correlations between the regression parameters obtained here and the static mechanical properties were investigated. Thus, significant correlations were found between the regression parameters and static mechanical properties (e.g., fatigue limit E and tensile strength sB). Based on these correlations, the S-N curves of high-strength steels were successfully predicted from their static mechanical properties, similar to structural carbon steels and aluminum alloys in previous studies. Moreover, from the distribution of the fatigue limit E, the percentile points for the estimated S-N curve were predicted. It was finally confirmed that 84 % of the S-N data series fall within the estimated interval of ±2s, where s represents the standard deviation of the fatigue limit. © 2019 Society of Materials science *** right reserved.
