BACKGROUND:Structural brain differences in the thalamus and the cortex have been widely reported in schizophrenia (SCZ) relative to neurotypical controls (NC). Most prior studies examined the thalamus as a whole, single region-of-interest. Additionally, findings in individuals at familial high-risk for schizophrenia (FHR) remain inconclusive. Here, we investigated whether local and network-wide thalamic-related structural alterations vary as a function of familial risk for schizophrenia. METHODS:Structural MRI scans were obtained from 5,197 participants (3,409 NC, 257 FHR, 1,531 SCZ) across 32 cross-sectional samples within the ENIGMA Consortium. Random-effects meta-analyses, and network analyses were conducted on (i) local thalamic alterations (volume estimates of seven thalamic subdivisions), and (ii) network-wide thalamic alterations (thickness and surface-related thalamo-cortical/cortico-cortical co-variation patterns) across groups (NC, FHR, SCZ). RESULTS:Individuals with SCZ showed significantly lower gray matter volume estimates in the anterior, pulvinar, medial, posterior, and ventral thalamic subdivisions compared to NC (q<0.05). FHR did not differ from NC. At the network-wide level, thalamo-cortical co-variations discriminated FHR from NC (q<0.05), with FHR showing intermediate co-variation between SCZ and NC. Cortico-cortical co-variation patterns revealed that SCZ and FHR shared similarly disconnected clustering configurations, distinct from NC (q<0.05). CONCLUSIONS:Results revealed lower thalamic volume estimates in SCZ but not in FHR, hence yielding no evidence of a familial risk trait, whereas thalamo-cortical and cortico-cortical co-variation estimates were associated with familial risk for SCZ These findings suggest that, once the thalamus is parsed into subdivisions, network-wide thalamo-cortical features may identify trait-dependent, neurobiological correlates of genetic risk for SCZ.

Undoped layered oxynitrides have not been considered as promising H 2 ‐evolution photocatalysts because of the low chemical stability of oxynitrides in aqueous solution. Here, we demonstrate the synthesis of a new layered perovskite oxynitride, K 2 LaTa 2 O 6 N, as an exceptional example of a water‐tolerant photocatalyst for H 2 evolution under visible light. The material underwent in‐situ H + /K + exchange in aqueous solution while keeping its visible‐light‐absorption capability. Protonated K 2 LaTa 2 O 6 N, modified with an Ir cocatalyst, exhibited excellent catalytic activity toward H 2 evolution in the presence of I − as an electron donor and under visible light; the activity was six times higher than Pt/ZrO 2 /TaON, one of the best‐performing oxynitride photocatalysts for H 2 evolution. Overall water splitting was also achieved using the Ir‐loaded, protonated K 2 LaTa 2 O 6 N in combination with Cs‐modified Pt/WO 3 as an O 2 evolution photocatalyst in the presence of an I 3 − /I − shuttle redox couple.

This paper proposes GPU-based implementation of the personal values-based user model recommender system for improving its computation efficiency. The personal values-based user model has been proposed for recommender systems, which identifies the attributes on which a user puts high priority when evaluating an item. Its effectiveness has been shown by applying it to content-based recommender systems. Although collaborative filtering based on personal values (personal values-based collaborative filtering) is also being studied, evaluation by offline experiment with large datasets and various parameter settings requires high computational cost. Therefore, this paper proposes to implement the personal values-based collaborative filtering using CUDA for speeding up the offline experiment. This paper describes overall structure of the personal values-based collaborative filtering including leave-one-out cross validation process, and conducts an experiment using 4travel and Rakuten Travel datasets. The result shows the efficiency of the proposed method improves with the size of rating table and the number of ratings. This paper also discusses several characteristics observed in the experiment. © 2016, Fuji Technology Press. All rights reserved.

Developing A “Polysulfide‐Phobic” Strategy to Restrain Shuttle Effect in Lithium–Sulfur Batteries

Inspired by hydrophobic interface, a novel design of “polysulfide‐phobic” interface was proposed and developed to restrain shuttle effect in lithium–sulfur batteries. Two‐dimensional VOPO 4 sheets with adequate active sites were employed to immobilize the polysulfides through the formation of a V−S bond. Moreover, owing to the intrinsic Coulomb repulsion between polysulfide anions, the surface anchored with polysulfides can be further evolved into a “polysulfide‐phobic” interface, which was demonstrated by the advanced time/space‐resolved operando Raman evidences. In particular, by introducing the “polysulfide‐phobic” surface design into separator fabrication, the lithium–sulfur battery performed a superior long‐term cycling stability. This work expands a novel strategy to build a “polysulfide‐phobic” surface by “self‐defense” mechanism for suppressing polysulfides shuttle, which provides new insights and opportunities to develop advanced lithium–sulfur batteries.

Index reduction for differential-algebraic equations with mixed matrices

Differential-algebraic equations (DAEs) are widely used for modeling of dynamical systems. The difficulty in solving numerically a DAE is measured by its differentiation index. For highly accurate simulation of dynamical systems, it is important to convert high-index DAEs into low-index DAEs. Most of existing simulation software packages for dynamical systems are equipped with an index-reduction algorithm given by Mattsson and Söderlind. Unfortunately, this algorithm fails if there are numerical cancellations. These numerical cancellations are often caused by accurate constants in structural equations. Distinguishing those accurate constants from generic parameters that represent physical quantities, Murota and Iri introduced the notion of a mixed matrix as a mathematical tool for faithful model description in structural approach to systems analysis. For DAEs described with the use of mixed matrices, efficient algorithms to compute the index have been developed by exploiting matroid theory. This paper presents an index-reduction algorithm for linear DAEs whose coefficient matrices are mixed matrices, i.e., linear DAEs containing physical quantities as parameters. Our algorithm detects numerical cancellations between accurate constants, and transforms a DAE into an equivalent DAE to which Mattsson-Söderlinds index-reduction algorithm is applicable. Our algorithm is based on the combinatorial relaxation approach, which is a framework to solve a linear algebraic problem by iteratively relaxing it into an efficiently solvable combinatorial optimization problem. The algorithm does not rely on symbolic manipulations but on fast combinatorial algorithms on graphs and matroids. Our algorithm is proved to work for any linear DAEs whose coefficient matrices are mixed matrices. Furthermore, we provide an improved algorithm under an assumption based on dimensional analysis of dynamical systems. Distributed Multi-Agent Optimization Based on an Exact Penalty Method with Equality and Inequality Constraints

This paper proposes a distributed multi-agent optimization protocol to minimize the average of objective functions of the agents in the network with satisfying equality and inequality constraints of each agent. The exact penalty method is adopted to obtain a linear distributed optimization protocol. The proposed protocol works only with the decision variables and does not need any additional variables. The proof of the consensus and convergence of the proposed protocol is provided as well as the boundedness under mild assumptions. The protocol is also illustrated by a numerical example.

Delayed bet-hedging resilience strategies under environmental fluctuations

Many biological populations, such as bacterial colonies, have developed through evolution a protection mechanism, called bet-hedging, to increase their probability of survival under stressful environmental fluctutation. In this context, the concept of preadaptation refers to a common type of bet-hedging protection strategy in which a relatively small number of individuals in a population stochastically switch their phenotypes to a 'dormant' metabolic state in which they increase their probability of survival against potential environmental shocks. Hence, if an environmental shock took place at some point in time, preadapted organisms would be better adapted to survive and proliferate once the shock is over. In many biological populations, the mechanisms of preadaptation and proliferation present delays whose influence in the fitness of the population are not well-understood. In this paper, we propose a rigorous mathematical framework to analyze the role of delays in both preadaptation and proliferation mechanisms in the survival of biological populations, with an emphasis on bacterial colonies. Our theoretical framework allows us to analytically quantify the average growth rate of a bet-hedging bacterial colony with stochastically delayed reactions with arbitrary precision. We verify the accuracy of the proposed method by numerical simulations and conclude that the growth rate of a bet-hedging population shows a non-trivial dependency on their preadaptation and proliferation delays. Contrary to the current belief, our results show that faster reactions do not, in general, increase the overall fitness of a biological population. Copyright © 2017, The Authors. We reconsider information dilution, which was originally proposed in [4]. This adds the noises to the value in table data in order to hide the actual value, namely information dilution is a kind of information hiding in table data. In this paper, we pick up lenses data set φ in UCI machine learning repository, and we dilute this data set φ with preserving obtainable rules. © 2016 IEEE.

A tiling of the plane is a set of figures, called tiles, that cover the plane without gaps or overlaps. On tiling we consider "Escherization problem": Given a closed figure in the plane, find a new closed figure that is similar to the original and can tile the plane. In this study, we give a new formulation of the problem with the weighted Procrustes distance and an algorithm to solve the problem optimally. We conduct computational experiments with animal shape tiles to confirm the effectiveness of the proposed method. © Springer International Publishing AG 2016.
