Final purpose in this research is to contribute to developing of assistive robot and apparatus. Recently, there is a pressing need to develop a new system which assists and acts for car driving and wheelchair for the elderly as the population grows older. In terms of developing a new system, it is thought that it is important to examine behaviors as well as spatial recognition. Therefore, experiments have been performed for an examination of human spatial perceptions, especially right and left recognition, during car driving using NIRS. In previous research, it has been documented that there were significant differences at dorsolateral prefrontal cortex at left hemisphere during virtual driving task and actual driving. In this paper, brain activity during car driving was measured and detailed analysis was performed by segmental brain activity during car driving on the basis of subjects' motion. So, we report the relationship between brain activity and movement concerned with perception during driving in this paper. © Copyright 2013 IARIA.

Nowadays, digital images can be easily obtained, recorded and processed in accordance with the widespread use of digital cameras and personal computers. There is an image enhancement as one of most general image processing techniques. In the image enhancement, unsharp masking (UM) has been used widely because its algorithm is very simple and can produce good results. However, over-enhancement occurs in edge parts of the image. Additionally UM also is easy to generate artifacts such as jaggy and halo. To cope with these problems, the authors proposed the selective UM method based on the edge-preserved smoothing filter. However, the image quality obtained by our method depends on values of the enhancement parameters, and their optimal values vary according to user's liking. In this paper, we propose an image enhancement system considering the user's liking by using an interactive genetic algorithm (IGA). In the proposed system, the IGA optimizes the parameters of the image enhancement. Further, a new genetic operation is introduced in order to achieve the effective search in the IGA of the proposed system. Through the experiments using some images, the effectiveness of the proposed system is verified.

Content-Centric Networking (CCN) is a novel architecture that has been proposed as a solution for dealing with various problems facing the Internet, such as the excessive bandwidth costs that result from peer-to-peer (P2P) traffic and content delivery networks (CDN). In order to deal with the difference between the principles of the Internet and the purposes for which it is actually used, CCN entails a change from a host-centric to content-centric architecture. However, there are deployment issues that will require a gradual approach in order to realize migration from the Internet to CCN. Additionally, the shortage of testbed environments needs to be addressed as quickly as possible. We focus on OpenFlow, which is a promising candidate to provide a programmable environment without disrupting existing networks. Specific implementations of CCN using OpenFlow have not been examined in sufficient detail, although there have been investigations into the conceptual design. This paper presents the detailed design and implementation of an OpenFlow-based CCN with the primary aim to achieve forwarding and end-to-end communication. Our approach can solve the issues in existing designs by using a map from content names to hierarchically structured hash values and the longest prefix match. We also discuss the advantage of retaining significant attributes of CCN and OpenFlow such as high-speed forwarding and network slicing which promotes deployment of CCN and research for routing, caching, and security strategies. © 2013 Authors.

This paper presents a novel approach to remove the specular reflections on the transparent plastic medicine package and automatically extract the randomly distributed pills inside. In this approach, three cameras are employed to take images of the package from different viewpoints. And these three images are used as input image set while the output is a series of small images of a single pill. And these images can be directly applied to the traditional single pill recognition algorithms. The experimental results show the reliability of our approach by measuring correct detection rate (100%), false detection rate (0%) and pill separation accuracy (98.4%). And the proposed method processes a set of three 725 x 725 sized images at 0.15s averagely on a Core i5-2400 3.1GHz PC.

We consider a multi-user multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) system using block diagonalization and eigenbeam-space division multiplexing to suppress inter-user interference and inter-stream interference. In time-varying environments, the performance seriously degrades due to mistracking of beamforming. A channel prediction scheme can eliminate the effect of the time-varying environments. In this paper, using indoor measurement data, we evaluate the bit error rate (BER) performance of a multi-user MIMO system with channel prediction based on an autoregressive model. It is shown that the proposed channel prediction technique can improve the BER performance significantly.

A car navigation system requires the latest reliable digital road map database for correctly performing responsible tasks, such as map display, positioning, route planning, and route guidance. In fact, however, the pre-installed road map database is used without any updates, although the actual roads were added and/or removed, since there is no easy way to update the database. This would cause misleading behaviors of these tasks. In this paper, we propose a broadcast-based notification protocol to inform car navigation systems about the existence of the updates in the road map database, in order to reduce the misleading influence of updated roads. The results of evaluations conducted on the efficacy of our proposed protocol indicate that it achieves all notifications for updated roads by broadcasting invalidation reports of 478KB, while the total size of the road map database is 132MB.

On the software development PBL (SDPBL), the implementation of firmly-fused development environment for students and monitoring environment for teachers are required in order to succeed in education. We have proposed the service, named "DaaS BADER" in compliance with demands from practical teachers to decrease the cost for preparation and maintenance of unified exercise environment and to monitor the progress of projects by teachers. In this paper, we have reported knowledge and information obtained by practical SDPBL and feedback contents for a student or group given by monitoring environment. Then, we have discussed the effectiveness of DaaS BADER from these results.

Modeling education is necessary for software engineers because object-oriented modeling is used widely in the computing industry. However, there may be problems in terms of the "necessity of models," "modeling methodology," and "model refinement" when learning about modeling. Model-driven development (MDD) can verify the accuracy of models and generate the source code, which allows a rogrammer to reduce the development time required to check the software so he or she can focus on the modeling process. Thus, modeling should be taught with MDD because it allows students to acquire modeling skills in a short period of time. We developed an education program using MDD for novices. The first concept used by this program is "software modeling education using MDD," which allows students to repeat model refinement in a short period of time. The second concept used by this program is "spiral education in the fundamental techniques and development xperience,"which allows students to learn fundamental techniques and understand methods that utilize these fundamental techniques. We conducted a trial course in a college, and the results confirmed improvement of modeling skills and reduction in the above-stated problems.
