This paper proposes a visual-based method for detecting the tilt angles of a platform using a single image. A particular circular reference object is used to provide information of the tilt angles via projective geometry. The image features of the reference object extracted by the basic rectangle and corner detection algorithm are used for ANFIS to estimate the tilt angles. The method is verified by simulation that it can detect the tilt angles very closely. Moreover, the method offers a very easy and low-cost approach for manufacturing applications.

In this challenge, we develop and distribute an integrated environment to flexibly combine multiple text mining techniques. Text mining techniques include numerous tasks such as salient sentence extraction, keyword extraction, topic extraction, textual coherence evaluation, multi-document summarization, and text clustering. Although tools that individually perform one or more of the above-mentioned tasks exist, it is difficult to integrate and activate multiple tools for a particular task. We attempt to provide the flexibility to integrate numerous tools that exist in the community in our proposed text mining environment. Users can use a customized version of the proposed text mining environment for their specific tasks, thereby concentrating solely on their creative work.

This paper presents a PDMS micro through-hole molding method by simple soft lithography process in which the surface of a master mold and a substrate is treated by atmospheric CH 4 /He RF plasma to feature hydrophobic property on the surface. Rectangular and circular-shaped PDMS micro through-hole layers are made by the proposed fabrication method. As one of the applications of the PDMS micro through-hole layer for multi-layered systems, a radial concentration gradient generator including a micro through-hole layer is constructed and its performance is tested. The micro through-holes fabricated by the proposed method are well-defined. The concentration gradients measured in radial directions are in a similar level. Also, the tearing problem, which is often happened in spin-coating and lift-off molding methods, is not observed during the fabrication process of the PDMS micro through-holes. Therefore, we believe that the proposed fabrication method contributes to improve the technology for PDMS through-hole fabrication.

Since the first success of satellite laser communication experiments, their developments and researches have been much studied as a new satellite communication technology. From those experimental results, it is known that an instantaneous degradation of received optical power and link disconnection occur due to air turbulence or tracking error in the satellite-to-ground laser transmission. Therefore, forward error correction (FEC) is needed to achieve a high-quality transmission and the application of low-density parity check (LDPC) code for the satellite laser communication has been proposed. However, further application of land mobile communication techniques for achieving higher capacity is not fully discussed. One of the candidates of this application for more efficient satellite laser communication is a multi-hop transmission, which can be applied for geostationary satellite (GEO)-to-ground or deep space-to-ground links. Therefore, we propose a multi-relay cooperative LDPC transmission scheme for satellite laser communications to obtain an improved transmission quality with lower decoding complexity. We propose a practical fiber optic probe, which uses a fiber patch cord and an anti-reflection coated ball lens for dental optical coherence tomography imaging. The probe has benefits of compactness, long working distance as well as comfort and oral hygiene for patients. With the proposed probe, the image of a human tooth, having enamel, dentin, dento-enamel junction and crack, was successively obtained. © 2011 AOS.

Recently, frequency-domain equalization for single-carrier transmission (SC-FDE) has been given much attention. For example, the enhanced mobile phone system, a SC-FDMA (Single-carrier frequency division multiple access) method using SC-FDE and multiple access will be adopted. However in previous research, there are many papers describing the features and advantages of SC-FDE based on a comparison of SC-FDE and orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM) systems. In this technical note, we discuss single-carrier transmission equalization in the time-domain (SC-TDE) and SC-FDE in a unified way centered on the Wiener filter based on the minimum mean square error (MMSE) criterion. The reason to take up a Wiener Filter is that it is a basic filter based on the MMSE criterion. Also, we explain the basic principle of the SC-FDE and SC-FDMA in an organized and systematic way. Moreover, we point out the physical meaning of the Wiener solution in SC-FDE and relationship between SC-TDE and SC-FDE Wiener solutions. As a result, we show useful information and pointers, especially for when we want to replace existing SC-TDE technology with SC-FDE technology. © 2011 The Institute of Electrical Engineers of Japan.

This paper introduces a comprehensive assessment tool of the built environment of cities, referred to as "CASBEE-City". The tool supports local governments and other stakeholders in identifying environmental, social and economic characteristics of their cities and to quantify the effectiveness of city-led policies. As for the other CASBEE tools, CASBEE-City also implements the concept of environmental efficiency and allows evaluation of a city from two aspects simultaneously: the aspect of decreasing negative environmental load emitted outside the city, and that of improving environmental quality and activities inside the city. It is expected to contribute to the realization of sustainable cities.

In order to explore the relationship between human social interaction and mental health, we investigated the correlations between the amount of face-to-face contact time and quantified mental health. Social interaction data were obtained by wearable sensing system for two organizations in Japan. In this study, we regarded face-to-face contact between individuals as social interaction. The mental health of individuals was measured by psychological questionnaire. We found that the social behavioral property of individuals tended to reflect quantified stress in both organizations. The results suggest the possibility that people who experience large amounts of social interaction tend to have less stress.

We propose a keyword auction protocol called the GSP-ExR (GSP with an exclusive right) in which the number of advertisements displayed around search results can be dynamically adjusted. It is an extension of the generalized second-price (GSP) auction, which is currently used for keyword auctions. However, in the GSP, the number of displayed advertisements (slots) is determined in advance. We consider adjusting the number of advertisements dynamically on the basis of the bids to improve both the social surplus and seller's revenue. In the GSP-ExR, the number of slots can be either 1 or K. The GSP-ExR pricing scheme is relatively simple and the seller's revenue is at least as good as that with the GSP. If the highest ranked bidder's bid is high enough, she can exclusively display her advertisement by paying a premium. Otherwise, the GSP-ExR is identical to the GSP. © 2010 - IOS Press and the authors. All rights reserved.

We propose a method of system-level UML modeling for evaluation the performance of embedded *** major part of proposed technology is the reverse modeling of embedded software. A method by eliminating execution traces to extract abstract behavior is stated in this paper. The execution traces captured on the existing product should be eliminated by dynamic analysis from the particular viewpoint, and we argue an elimination from performance viewpoint. A model required for performance evaluation can be created from the elimination result as a representation of abstract behavior of the existing product. A case study of an actual product of MFP (multifunction peripheral/printer) is presented in this paper. The method is evaluated by comparing the performance of a MFP prototype and the model created by the method. We conclude the method is good for performance evaluation of embedded systems by evaluating the accuracy of performance estimation and the characteristics retention by the elimination.
