Multi-objective optimization using fuzzy logic for an alpha-beta filter

The Kalman-like fixed-gain filters, namely α - β filters, havebeen recognized as outstanding tools for estimating position and velocitysignals of moving objects. In design, the values of parameter α, βplay the key roles in the determination of estimation performance;therefore,various optimization schemes have been proposed in the literature. In general,the choice of parameters is a trade-off problem between the tracking accuracyand noise suppression capability. This paper presents a multi-objectiveoptimization strategy for the design of α - β filters. First, thedesign of an α - β filter is formulated as a multi-objectiveoptimization problem in terms of a weighted sum of tracking accuracy and noisesuppression. Then, a fuzzy logic system is incorporated to help determine theoptimal values of parameters and improve the estimate performance. Finally, anumerical example is employed to illustrate the design and demonstrate itseffectiveness. The experimental results strongly suggest that the design ofα - β filter-proposed in this paper is capable of tracking thedesired signals accurately and reduce the effect of noise corruption *** International © 2009.

We propose a programmable and scalable traffic management scheme. Programmable traffic management at high-speed routers is difficult because programmability and high-speed packet processing have involved a serious tradeoff. To attain both, the new scheme combines control programs at a control server and simple packet handling functions, such as sampling packet headers and discarding packets, at routers. Therefore, by installing appropriate control programs into the server, a variety of active queue management schemes, per-flow bandwidth management schemes, DoS mitigation schemes, and so on, are achieved. One of the main contributions of this paper is its proposal of a statistical scheme for handling flows. As only a fraction of complete flow information stored at the control server is loaded into the router's flow table and it is replaced cyclically, the proposed scheme scales more than the router's flow table capacity. Our simulation results indicate that the scheme provides efficient traffic management, per-flow WFQ emulation in our example, even with very small flow tables compared to the number of concurrently active flows. Furthermore, we discuss implementation issues with the proposed scheme and reveal that the processing cost at the server and router is sufficiently small for use with 10 Gbps links.

For picture taking, 3D scenery is projected to a 2D image through the camera center. Different position of the camera will cause a different image. It is hard to estimate the camera position only from an image. In this paper, a method to estimate the position of the camera by extracting features from a 2D image and using adaptive neuro-fuzzy inference systems (ANFIS) is proposed. From the experimental results, it is evidently that the proposed method can estimate the center of the camera correctly in a short time.

In order to solve the bottleneck problem of building an expert system, a knowledge acquisition model of fault diagnosis expert system for satellites was presented. Firstly, a data discretization algorithm based on fuzzy sets was put forward to do discretization work for decision table. Secondly, a rule extraction algorithm was brought forth to extract productive rules from decision table. Thirdly, we take an example to demonstrate how to extract productive rules for fault diagnosis expert system for satellites. The operation parameters of a satellite's power system were collected and discretized to construct a decision table. We employed attribute reduction algorithm based on discernibility matrix to do attribute reduction and then extract productive rules using the rule extraction algorithm we presented. The comparison between the rules extracted by rough sets software Rosetta and our model demonstrated the correctness and effective of our knowledge acquisition model.

Although we can often observe time-series data of many elements, these elements do not always interact with each other. This paper proposes a scheme to estimate the interdependency among observed elements only by time-series data, which is useful for selecting essential elements to optimize multivariate prediction model. Because this estimation is a sort of combinatorial optimization problems, we applied the genetic algorithm as a method to moderate this problem. Through some simulations, we confirmed performance of our method, which can identify interaction of multivariate system and can improve its prediction accuracy. Especially, our method can be applied to predict real foreign-exchange markets even if system has nonstational property and its structure changes dynamically.

We investigated eye movement in a transportation task using remote control. Participants controlled two sets of joysticks to move a toy excavator and a toy truck monitoring the task process through video displays. They repeated the task ten times. At an early stage of skill acquisition, the participants tended to look at both task related objects (e.g., material to transport and the shovel) and the course (e.g., ground and wall), but did not look much at obstacles (trees). At a late stage of skill acquisition, the participants tended to look at the course, other than related objects or obstacles. However, fixations to related objects did not decrease in ldquolook aheadrdquo fixations or fixations prior to manipulation of the joystick. It can be said that as humans acquire a skill, the positions of the related objects are learned so they did not actually look at these objects when they manipulate joystick. We came to a temporal conclusion that the participants might allocate ldquocovert attentionrdquo or attention without gaze to these related objects and obstacles for better performance.

This paper explores a method for creating large-scale urban 3D models from GIS spatial data. It is capable of automatic generation of realistic VR models based on existing GIS data. Parametric 3D models of houses are created from polygon data, fences from line data, and pedestrians and trees from point data. The method is applied to the project `Virtual Kyoto Time-Space' in which the whole city of Kyoto of the Edo era is re-created.

A method is proposed for clustering data that results in more accurate clustering when clusters are close to each other. The method takes into account the continuity of the data by using a self-organizing map showing the separation and combination of code vectors. Using this map reduces the dependence of fitting of code vectors. The proposed method can be thus used to obtain accurate clustering.

Entering the 21st century, the aging process and increasing chronic diseases in Taiwan society have become more prevalent. To deal with the problem, we develop a ubiquitous healthcare (u-Health) system platform that integrates wireless telecommunication, sensor network, and information technology to take care of patients having chronic diseases. The u-Health system provides not only telecare at home setting, but also a health community network which can further integrate medical care and life care and emphasize on patent humanity and dignity. For this purpose, a holistic u-Health system focusing on the physiological, psychosocial, arts, recreational, and even spiritual aspects of patients was implemented for people living in the community. In this study, we applied our community based u-Health system to the current and retired employees of National Taiwan University (NTU) who had at least one of the following chronic diseases: hypertension, diabetes mellitus and obesity, and required long term follow up and treatment. A community medical group (CMG) which is formed with family doctors from the Family Medicine Department of NTU Hospital, the Yung-Ho Branch of Cardinal Tien Hospital, NTU Health Center, and several other local clinics in Taipei City was in charge of the medical care along with a dedicated case managing nurse for the medical care at outpatient clinics, home telecare and 24-hour health consultation. Using this integrated community-based system is expected to provide a comprehensive and ubiquitous healthcare and eventually improve the quality of care by increasing compliance and reducing the complications of chronic diseases.
