In order to establish a method designing a tactile display, we developed a matrix-type tactile display mounted on a mouse, and tested it in several experiments. In virtual texture presentation experiments, the human subjects touched virtual textures composed of crossed-axis patterns and judged variations in crossed-axis angles. They palpated two virtual textures;one is standard texture fixed during entire experiment;the other is comparison texture changed freely by them. Human subjects try to change the comparison texture as it coincides with the standard texture. If the difference between crossed-axis angles of standard and comparison textures is called the threshold in psychophysics and is assumed to be sensitivity of human sensation. By evaluating changes in the threshold, it was found that the value of the two-point threshold was adopted as pitch between stimulus pins in the design of the tactile display and that under the pin stroke of 0.25 mm the human operators were not able to distinguish striped virtual textures.

In order to develop a diamond AFM probe with a piezoelectric sensor and actuator, we fabricated lead zirconate titanate (PZT) thin film on a diamond thin film substrate and examined its piezoelectric properties. The PZT thin film was sputtered at room temperature and then annealed in a nitrogen (N/sub 2/) ambient to obtain a perovskite structure. On diamond thin film substrates, the value of piezoelectric constant, d/sub 31/, was as low as about -20 pC/N due to rough surface of the diamond film. After a poling treatment, however, its piezoelectric constant improved to about -65 pC/N. For realization of a PZT sensor and actuator on a diamond cantilever, the PZT thin film was also successfully patterned by reactive ion etching (RIE) in SF/sub 6/ plasma using a Pt upper electrode layer as an etching mask without any damage on a diamond layer. Based on the fabrication and patterning of PZT thin film together with microfabrication techniques of CVD diamond film, we demonstrate the diamond AFM probe of 150 /spl mu/m in length, 50 /spl mu/m in width and 5 /spl mu/m in thickness with a PZT sensor and actuator of 1 /spl mu/m in thickness. The resolution of image sensing and actuation force were estimated to be about 0.4 nm at a resolution of charge measurement of 1/spl times/10/sup -15/ C and 12 /spl mu/N at an applied voltage of 8 V, respectively.

We propose a flexible intra-fascicular nerve electrode for control of an artificial heart fabricated by micro machining techniques. We have studied methods for the control of an artificial heart by using autonomous nerve information. Though several approaches have been reported for chronic measurements from peripheral nerves, stable and long-term measurements from autonomous nerves have not yet been established. In order to realize stable and low-invasive measurements, we focused on the electrode's flexibility. Our electrode is fabricated on a flexible polyimide film using micro machining techniques. The electrode consists of four needle-shaped flexible probes. After the planar patterning process, the tips of each probe are bent perpendicularly for insertion into the nerve bundle. The recording sites are placed on the tips of the each probe for the purpose of contacting nondamaged nerve areas. Also the hook-shaped structures are fabricated near the tips to avoid tips and nerve bundle shifting. As a result of preliminary experiments, the thickness of the film that is able to be inserted into the vagal nerve bundle of goat is 75 /spl mu/m. As a first step for the evaluation for the electrodes, we were able to successfully measure neural activities of the sciatic nerve bundle of rats.

In this paper, an identification-based adaptive predistorter scheme is proposed to compensate nonlinearity of high power amplifier (HPA) in OFDM system. A Wiener model is adopted to describe the input-output relationship of HPA, where a linear dynamics is followed by a memoryless nonlinear static element approximated by using complex power series expression. In order to compensate the nonlinear distortions in the HPA, a predistorter is constructed as an inverse system of the HPA by using a Hammerstein model, and adaptive identification algorithm for the predistortion is developed in the time-domain, some results obtained by using least square (LS) algorithm in the frequency-domain are also shown. Numerical simulations validate the effectiveness of the proposed adaptive schemes.

Recent software systems contain a lot of functions to provide various services. According to this tendency, software testing becomes more difficult than before and cost of testing increases so much, since many test items are required. In this paper we propose and discuss such a new selective software testing method that is constructed from previous testing method by simplifying testing specification. We have presented, in the previous work, a selective testing method to perform highly efficient software testing. The selective testing method has introduced an idea of functional priority testing and generated test items according to their functional priorities. Important functions with high priorities are tested in detail, and functions with low priorities are tested less intensively. As a result, additional cost for generating testing instructions becomes relatively high. In this paper in order to reduce its cost, we change the way of giving information, with respect to priorities. The new method gives the priority only rather than generating testing instructions to each test item, which makes the testing method quite simple and results in cost reduction. Except for this change, the new method is essentially the same as the previous method. We applied this new method to actual development of software tool and evaluated its effectiveness. From the result of the application experiment, we confirmed that many crucial faults can be detected by using the proposed method.

We propose several algorithms that reconfigure virtual topologies in wide area wavelength-routed optical networks. The reconfiguration algorithms attempt to keep the the network availability as much as possible during the reconfiguration process. For this purpose, a lightpath is taken as the minimum unit of reconfiguration, which is an all-optical wavelength-division multiplexed (WDM) channel. The proposed algorithms are evaluated by using an NFSNET-like network model with 16 nodes and 25 links. The results show that very simple algorithms provide very small computational complexity but poor performance, i.e., bad network availability, and that an efficient algorithm provides reasonable computational complexity and very good performance. More complex algorithms may improve performance somewhat further but have unrealistically large computational complexity.

To drastically reduce the power dissipation (P) of motion estimation (ME) circuits, a fast ME algorithm called the "multi-step improved breaking-off-search (M-IBOS)" has been developed. M-IBOS can improve the speed of a full search algorithm by a factor of 4 to 8.5, while achieving the same visual quality. A new 0.13-/spl mu/m CMOS accumulation-type ME circuit for M-IBOS has been designed. P is reduced to 374 /spl mu/W, which is 1/1754 that of the previously developed 0.6-/spl mu/m CMOS Wallace-tree ME circuit.

Probability measures are well-defined ones that satisfy additivity. However, it is slightly tight because of its condition of additivity. Fuzzy measures that do not satisfy additivity have been proposed as the substitute measures. The only belief function involves a density function among them. In this paper, we propose two density functions by extending values of probability functions to interval values, which do not satisfy additivity. According to the definition of interval probability functions, lower and upper probabilities are defined, respectively. A combination rule and a conditional probability can be defined well. The properties of the proposed measure are clarified. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2001.

This paper proposes an operating system CEFOS (Communication and Execution Fusion OS), which fuses interprocessor communication and intra processor computation. Fusion of communications and internal executions is achieved both in executions and function interfaces in CEFOS. CEFOS is based on a fine-grain multi-threading approach. In the fine-grain thread control, one of the major problems is how to reduce the frequency of context switching and communication between user process and CEFOS Kernel. The important point to resolve this problem is to design the environment which supports an efficient cooperation environment between user process and CEFOS kernel. We propose a Display Request and Data (DRD) function and Wrapped system Call (WSC) mechanism with DRD function, which provide efficient cooperation between user process and CEFOS Kernel. DRD and WSC reduce the number of invocations from user process threads to the OS kernel and achieve high speeds thread switching.
