Real-time social interactions and multi-streaming are two critical features of live streaming services. In this paper, we formulate a new fundamental service query, Social-aware Diverse and Preferred Organization Query (SDSQ), that jointly selects a set of diverse and preferred live streaming channels and a group of socially tight viewers for organization of a live multi-streaming soiree. We prove that SDSQ is NP-hard and inapproximable within any factor, and design SDSSel, a 2-approximation algorithm with a guaranteed error bound. Moreover, we study SDSQ-T, a special case of SDSQ, where the social graph is a threshold graph, and propose TDSSel, a 2-approximation algorithm without any error to SDSQ-T. We propose two pruning strategies, PCP and CDP to boost SDSSel and TDSSel. We further propose a more challenging but practical service query, Generalized Social-aware Maximum Preferred and Diverse Query (GSPQ), a generalization of SDSQ. We design GPDSel, a 4-approximation algorithm for GSPQ with a guaranteed error bound. We propose a strategy to improve the approximation ratios of the proposed algorithms. A user study on Twitch validates SDSQ, and the large-scale experiments on real datasets demonstrate the superiority of the proposed algorithms over several baselines for live-streaming services. © 2008-2012 IEEE.

This study investigates frame-wise optimization in Mobile Edge computing (MEC) for video transmission, emphasizing dynamic adaptation to diverse frame complexities and efficient resource utilization. The comprehensive system model captures the complexities of joint optimizations in MEC for real-time video transmission, addressing challenges associated with error concealment techniques, and enhancing the user experience by addressing successive frame losses. To handle credit assignment in multi-agent scenarios, we integrate counterfactual reward shaping, introducing a counterfactual reward multi-agent proximal policy optimization (CRMAPPO). Results reveal the impact of the credit assignment parameter (β) on algorithm performance, demonstrating a trade-off between accurate credit assignment and policy bias. The study emphasizes CRMAPPO's performance, surpassing traditional MAPPO under optimal β choices, marking a substantial 109.18% improvement in total rewards. This research significantly contributes to optimizing resource allocation in video transmission within MEC frameworks, addressing challenges associated with frame-wise optimization and providing a nuanced understanding of credit assignment dynamics in multi-agent environments.

Variational Quantum Algorithms (VQAs) represent a class of algorithms that utilize a hybrid approach, combining classical and quantum computing techniques. In this approach, classical computers serve as optimizers that update circuit parameters to find approximate solutions to complex problems. In this study, we apply a method known as Light Cone Cancellation (LCC) to optimize variational circuits, effectively reducing the required number of qubits and gates for circuit simulation. We then evaluate the performance of LCC one of the VQAs—the Variational Quantum Eigensolver (VQE)—to address the Max-Cut problem. Compared with the Quantum Approximate Optimization Algorithm (QAOA), VQE offers greater degrees of freedom and promising results at lower circuit depths. By applying LCC to VQE, we can shift the complexity of circuit simulation from the number of qubits to the number of edges in the graph, i.e., from exponential time to polynomial time. This enables us to solve large problems up to 100 vertices, without actually simulating the entire circuit. From our simulation in a 7-qubit and a 27-qubit fake backends, we show that LCC yields higher approximation ratios than those cases without LCC, implying that the effect of noise is reduced when LCC is applied. © 2024, CC BY.

The research on Variational Quantum Algorithms (VQAs) has gained significant momentum because of their promising practicality in the noisy intermediate-scale quantum (NISQ) era. Recent studies highlight the potential of VQAs in reinforcement learning (RL) by replacing classical components with parameterized quantum circuits (PQCs). Building on this, we propose a quantum Q-learning model for the Capacitated Vehicle Routing Problem (CVRP), combining a PQC with an RL training process. We present a PQC for embedding both static and dynamic states in RL environments. The proposed PQC approximates the Q-value function by using the expectation values of different observables. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed PQC outperforms the existing PQC for the CVRP with fewer quantum resources. Furthermore, our method shows competitive performance compared to the classical counterpart.

Routing packets in Wireless Sensor Network (WSN) is challenging due to the distribution of sensor nodes with different ability. Inefficient routing may lead to higher failure rate, higher latency and higher energy consumption. One of the common approaches to solve this problem is by using bio-inspired routing algorithms due to their abilities to adapt with dynamic environment. This paper proposed an improved ant colony system for packing routing in WSN that focuses on exploration and exploitation techniques. In the proposed routing algorithm, the best path to be used for packet transmission will be determined by considering the remaining energy of each sensor node to reduce the hotspot problem. Local pheromone update and global pheromone update are used with the aim to prevent imbalanced energy depletion of sensor nodes and to balance the packet distribution. The proposed routing algorithm was validated against several bio-inspired routing algorithms in medium and large sized networks. The results suggested that it has outperformed in terms of success rate, packet loss rate, latency and energy efficiency. © Published under licence by IOP Publishing Ltd.

The rapid advancement of immersive technologies has propelled the development of the Metaverse, where the convergence of virtual and physical realities necessitates the generation of high-quality, photorealistic images to enhance user experience. However, generating these images, especially through Generative Diffusion Models (GDMs), in mobile edge computing environments presents significant challenges due to the limited computing resources of edge devices and the dynamic nature of wireless networks. This paper proposes a novel framework that integrates contract-inspired contest theory, Deep Reinforcement Learning (DRL), and GDMs to optimize image generation in these resource-constrained environments. The framework addresses the critical challenges of resource allocation and semantic data transmission quality by incentivizing edge devices to efficiently transmit high-quality semantic data, which is essential for creating realistic and immersive images. The use of contest and contract theory ensures that edge devices are motivated to allocate resources effectively, while DRL dynamically adjusts to network conditions, optimizing the overall image generation process. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed approach not only improves the quality of generated images but also achieves superior convergence speed and stability compared to traditional methods. This makes the framework particularly effective for optimizing complex resource allocation tasks in mobile edge Metaverse applications, offering enhanced performance and efficiency in creating immersive virtual environments. © 2002-2012 IEEE.

In order to expand the applications of electronically controllable intense mid-air ultrasonic fields generated with airborne ultrasonic phased arrays (AUPA), a precise spatial calibration method between multiple AUPAs is in great demand. However, the conventional methods, such as manual fine-tuning and acoustic beam scanning, take a long time to complete. Here, we propose a quicker calibration method using thermal imaging. By placing an acoustically translucent screen in the AUPAs’ sound field containing narrow and straight sound beams, acoustic energy in the field is converted into a two-dimensional heat map. By shooting several images with a thermal camera changing the beam position, information about the relative spatial information between the screen and the AUPAs is promptly visualized. We developed the algorithm to estimate the postures of AUPAs from the obtained image. We conducted a preliminary experiment about thermal imaging and a numerical simulation of the AUPA posture estimation algorithm and verified the effectiveness of our proposed method.
