This paper intends to describe the design process related to an algorithms and programming environment to support the beginner's learning process. The system has a set of tools and functionalities, and agent named AMIGO to help the teacher to organize student's information. The agent's tasks are: collects student profile information, and to organize the tasks related to student's activities and evaluation process. The system framework has a uphold methodology that justify and gives support to the choice made during our design process. We do not intend to show experimental results. We claim that we can build educational environments taking advantages from agents technology, and a mixed methodology based on presential and virtual classes. We believe it is not possible to create good and helpful educational software without those premises.

Preplanned recovery using redundant trees in vertex-redundant or edge-redundant graphs is extended to the case where each edge has a cost and the goal is to find a pair of working and protection trees such that the cost of the working tree is as low as possible. We present efficient heuristic algorithms for this problem. Extensive computational results show that the cost of the working tree found with our algorithm is within 19% of the cost of a minimum spanning tree on the average, while the smaller cost of the working and protection trees found by the original algorithm without QoS consideration is about 95% over the cost of a minimum spanning tree on the average.

In front of solidifying interface of surfactant-water solution, a concentration boundary layer is formed due to the accumulation of the surface active agent. When the bubbles enters into the boundary layer, the bubbles are expected to move toward the solidifying interface by the surface tension gradient along the bubble surface. This phenomenon is regarded to be a kind of the Marangoni effect in a broad sense and was found experimentally under 1G condition by Wang and Mukai.

AOA and TDOA are known to be promising methods and are developed separately. Combination or cooperation of the two methods has not been possible due to lack of the applicable channel models. The COST-207 model is utilized to provide the angular information for the AOA method. The angular characteristic of the channel can be obtained from the given temporal channel model, hence fusing of the approaches is now possible. Different properties of the methods are revealed to verify the proposition in literature. As a future research area, the fusing of the two different methods for better reliability and accuracy is mentioned.

A stabilized conforming nodal integration for Galerkin mesh-free methods

Domain integration by Gauss quadrature in the Galerkin mesh-free methods adds considerable complexity to solution procedures. Direct nodal integration, on the other hand, leads to a numerical instability due to under integration and vanishing derivatives of shape functions at the nodes. A strain smoothing stabilization for nodal integration is proposed to eliminate spatial instability in nodal integration. For convergence, an integration constraint (IC) is introduced as a necessary condition for a linear exactness in the mesh-free Galerkin approximation. The gradient matrix of strain smoothing is shown to satisfy IC using a divergence theorem. No numerical control parameter is involved in the proposed strain smoothing stabilization. The numerical results show that the accuracy and convergent rates in the mesh-free method with a direct nodal integration are improved considerably by the proposed stabilized conforming nodal integration method. It is also demonstrated that the Gauss integration method fails to meet IC in mesh-free discretization. For this reason the proposed method provides even better accuracy than Gauss integration for Galerkin mesh-free method as presented in several numerical examples. Eigenvalue multiplicity estimate in semidefinite programming

A semidefinite programming problem is a mathematical program in which the objective function is linear in the unknowns and the constraint set is defined by a linear matrix inequality. This problem is nonlinear, nondifferentiable, but convex. It covers several standard problems (such as linear and quadratic programming) and has many applications in engineering. Typically, the optimal eigenvalue multiplicity associated with a linear matrix inequality is larger than one. Algorithms based on prior knowledge of the optimal eigenvalue multiplicity for solving the underlying problem have been shown to be efficient. In this paper, we propose a scheme to estimate the optimal eigenvalue multiplicity from points close to the solution. With some mild assumptions, it is shown that there exists an open neighborhood around the minimizer so that our scheme applied to any point in the neighborhood will always give the correct optimal eigenvalue multiplicity. We then show how to incorporate this result into a generalization of an existing local method for solving the semidefinite programming problem. Finally, a numerical example is included to illustrate the results.

This paper presents a new and accurate algorithm for assessing circularity tolerance from a set of data points obtained from a Coordinate Measuring Machine (CMM). This method, called Selective Zone Search algorithm, divides the workspace into small sectors called search zones and searches for the extreme points in these zones. These extreme points are used to draw a pair of concentric circles with minimum radial separation. The radial difference gives the circularity. The methodology has been tested with several example data sets and the results have been compared with the Least Squares method, Minimum Spanning Circle method and the Voronoi Diagram method. © 1996 American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME). In this paper, we propose an interior-point method for minimizing a convex function subject to linear constraints. Our method employs ideas from a previously studied method due to Fan and Nekooie in a different context. Under certain assumptions, we show that the proposed method has a fast rate of convergence. A numerical example is included to illustrate the method.

We investigate the validity of modal testing technique at high temperatures and also investigate the dynamic mechanical properties of thermoplastic laminated plates via modal parameters. The technique of one-way analysis of covariance is applied towards examining the resonant frequencies of stainless steel SUS 304 plate and the modal testing technique is shown to be stable and reliable in the oven. Additionally, the resonant frequency of each mode of AS4/APC-2 and AS4/PPS laminated plates increases linearly with increase in chamber temperature below the glass transition temperature. The small change of the resonant frequencies indicates that the stiffness of the specimen is slightly influenced by the temperature.

The finite difference-time domain (FD-TD) technique is applied to the solution of Maxwell's equations. A computer program, which can be used to simulate and study numerous electromagnetic phenomena, is developed and implemented on an IBM 386 compatible personal computer. The FD-TD technique is a useful tool for students in electromagnetics. The technique is flexible and can be applied to many basic EM scattering and radiation problems. Because field solutions are found as a function of time, visualization of the propagation of the EM fields is possible. The FD-TD technique is implemented for a two-dimensional rectangular grid in conjunction with a second-order absorbing boundary condition. Both E- and H-field polarizations are analyzed. Finite objects consisting of dielectric, magnetic and conducting materials, and perfectly conducting infinite ground planes are modeled. Plane wave and line current sources are implemented. In addition to the capability of animating the propagation of the EM fields, radiation and scattering patterns can be generated.
