For mobile robot local path planning under outdoor environment, Ridge Regression Extreme Learning Machines (RRELM) is adopted, it is a fast machine learning classification method to apply in path planning. Firstly, the laser rangefinder data are extracted and marked to describe the outdoor environment. Secondly, ridge regression theory is utilized to improve the generalization ability of ELM for local path planning. Meanwhile, the start-goal point constraint is considered for planning. Additionally, abrupt dynamic obstacle is regarded as a kind of disturbance to plan the path by RRELM. Then the optimal path is estimated by the distance evaluation function among feasible paths. Finally, a great deal of outdoor robot simulation experiments are shown that RRELM find out the safety path for outdoor robot, and the generalization ability, smoothness and rapidity of RRELM for path planning are better than SVM and ELM, furthermore, the performance of RRELM for the dynamic environment is also efficient.

In this paper, a simplified approach to modeling Maximum Power Point Tracking (MPPT) for photovoltaic (PV) applications, and a simple procedure for implementing an approximation to MPPT sometimes referenced as the “constant voltage” (CV) method, are presented. To develop these concepts, the photovoltaic source is first modeled. A simplified model of the means for adjusting the photovoltaic source operating point voltage and current is then presented for the case of a DC-DC converter, viewed as a variable load impedance for the PV source. Utilizing this simplified modeling approach, MPPT is then implemented to maximize the available PV output, using the CV procedure as the photovoltaic source irradiance is varied. Results are shown in the form of plots. In summary, it is shown that (1) a simplified modeling approach can yield insight into MPPT without focusing on complexities of system components, and (2) that the CV method can be a very effective alternative to more involved MPPT approaches such as perturb and observe, variable conductance, and other strategies.

The aim of this study is to increase the friction coefficient between C/C composites at low temperature to moderate the dependence of the frictional coefficient on the temperature condition. In this study, micro-sized glass fibers were introduced to precursor resin for the C/C composite. The preform plate was prepared by filament winding method. The precursor was carbonized by being exposed at the maximum temperature of 2200 °C. To investigate temperature dependence of the friction coefficient, friction test was carried out while test temperature was changed. The result showed it was effective to apply micro-sized glass fibers to be stabile the coefficient of friction between C/C composites. The XRD indicated that SiC was synthesized in the body of fabricated C/C composite. Due to the scratching with prevention of formation of large-sized particles, the frictional force was improved even when the friction was applied at low temperature by the modification of C/C composite.

Background: The sustainable development goals (SDGs) aim to end HIV/AIDS as a public health threat by 2030. Understanding the current state of the HIV epidemic and its change over time is essential to this effort. This study assesses the current sex-specific HIV burden in 204 countries and territories and measures progress in the control of the epidemic. Methods: To estimate age-specific and sex-specific trends in 48 of 204 countries, we extended the Estimation and Projection Package Age-Sex Model to also implement the spectrum paediatric model. We used this model in cases where age and sex specific HIV-seroprevalence surveys and antenatal care-clinic sentinel surveillance data were available. For the remaining 156 of 204 locations, we developed a cohort-incidence bias adjustment to derive incidence as a function of cause-of-death data from vital registration systems. The incidence was input to a custom Spectrum model. To assess progress, we measured the percentage change in incident cases and deaths between 2010 and 2019 (threshold >75% decline), the ratio of incident cases to number of people living with HIV (incidence-to-prevalence ratio threshold <0·03), and the ratio of incident cases to deaths (incidence-to-mortality ratio threshold <1·0). Findings: In 2019, there were 36·8 million (95% uncertainty interval [UI] 35·1–38·9) people living with HIV worldwide. There were 0·84 males (95% UI 0·78–0·91) per female living with HIV in 2019, 0·99 male infections (0·91–1·10) for every female infection, and 1·02 male deaths (0·95–1·10) per female death. Global progress in incident cases and deaths between 2010 and 2019 was driven by sub-Saharan Africa (with a 28·52% decrease in incident cases, 95% UI 19·58–35·43, and a 39·66% decrease in deaths, 36·49–42·36). Elsewhere, the incidence remained stable or increased, whereas deaths generally decreased. The basal ganglia play an important role in motor control and their malfunction is implicated in several disorders including Parkinson's disease (PD), in which dopamine concentration is greatly reduced. This is associated with changes in their firing patterns, evidenced by increase in firing rate of output nuclei of basal ganglia and synchronization between neurons of different micro-circuitry of basal ganglia. The most effective way to alleviate the symptoms of PD is to take Levodopa which replenishes dopamine storage in the brain. However, long-term use of Levodopa results in motor fluctuations and dyskinesia. Here, we developed a conductance-based computational model of basal ganglia which considers modulatory effects of dopamine on its target nucleus, that is on striatum. This model can be used to investigate the effect of variations of the dopamine levels on motor fluctuation. Moreover, the effect of applying deep brain electrical stimulation on different nuclei of basal ganglia can be investigated through the proposed model.

This paper presents the research on the development of neural network based non-linear controllers for an airplane UAV. Multi-layer perceptrons are used for the training of networks, both off-line and on-line. The data required for off-line training is generated from a validated non-linear flight dynamics model of the Cal Poly Pomona 12' Telemaster UAV. The off-line trained network using multilayer perceptrons replaces the inverse transformation required for feedback linearization. On-line training is then accomplished to account for the inversion and modeling error. The controllers are tested in the software-in-the-loop simulation environment using FlightGear Flight Simulator. Simulation results compared with flight data are shown. Also shown are the results in the presence of sensor noise.

The aim of this paper is to investigate the mathematical modelling of maintenance effects in optimal maintenance model. Motivated by the Arithmetic Reduction of Intensity model with memory (ARI), our goal is to build a model, which can be used to unveil the quality of the maintenance performed according to current state or condition of equipments rather than its virtual age. By analyzing influence of maintenance actions on decision making, a state enhancement or reduction model (SERM) is presented in which maintenance effects are interprets as a random variable of real state and maintenance times. SERM models with and without human factors are constructed respectively. Then, the goodness character such as convergence and stability of it is proved by deducing formulation. And fit methods are given to estimate the parameters and human factors of model through historical maintenance information, which is easy to get from actual maintenance practice. Finally maintenance decision model simulation is used to analyzing the efficiency of it. © 2013 Springer-Verlag.

Tuning Recurrent Neural Networks for Recognizing Handwritten Arabic Words

Artificial neural networks have the abilities to learn by example and are capable of solving problems that are hard to solve using ordinary rule-based programming. They have many design parameters that affect their performance such as the number and sizes of the hidden layers. Large sizes are slow and small sizes are generally not accurate. Tuning the neural network size is a hard task because the design space is often large and training is often a long process. We use design of experiments techniques to tune the recurrent neural network used in an Arabic handwriting recognition system. We show that best results are achieved with three hidden layers and two subsampling layers. To tune the sizes of these five layers, we use fractional factorial experiment design to limit the number of experiments to a feasible number. Moreover, we replicate the experiment configuration multiple times to overcome the randomness in the training process. The accuracy and time measurements are analyzed and modeled. The two models are then used to locate network sizes that are on the Pareto optimal frontier. The approach described in this paper reduces the label error from 26.2% to 19.8%.
