Increased awareness of decarbonization and high fuel prices have induced a need for a wider deployment of alternative energy sources. Battery-powered electric trucks using an electrified road system offer a promising solution. This paper aims to evaluate the fuel consumption and environmental benefits of a 6 km road in Laem Chabang Port, Thailand, with a prototype system based on conductive charging from below. Battery capacity penetrations were designed for 1258 trucks traveling on weekdays. The annual electricity demand reached 1.608 TWh, and the flexible demand reached 1.65 TWh. The input was Thailand’s standard electricity, with one 50 kVA power substation per 0.0016 km2 and a 22 kV/400–230 V voltage system. Penetration required a capacity of 525 kWh. The findings indicate that fuel consumption was 592.43 TWh, and CO2 emissions were 51.63 MtCO2 annually. The electrified road system was evaluated with time series, fixed-effect, and tobit regressions. The time series analysis revealed that CO2 emissions would be nearly zero by 2060, with an annual 4% increase in Laem Chabang’s gross domestic product. A fixed-effect analysis signified the findings with Thailand’s recent potential, whereas the tobit regression represented the influence of possible changes. These regressions demonstrated that variations in revenue, oil resources, openness to the sea, and political stability significantly affected CO2 emissions, although there was no change in the implementation of the electrified road system. © 2024 by Begell House, Inc.

Floating solar systems are renewable energy technology in which the solar modules are not installed on the roof or the ground-mounted but rather float on water bodies. These are some advantages, particularly in areas with limited space. Compared to conventional solar power plants, floating modules have additional advantages, such as reducing the evaporation water losses and operating more efficiently, causing the temperature of solar modules to decrease. This research aimed to investigate previous journal articles, conference proceedings, and books from ScienceDirect, Scopus, and IEEE databases. Therefore, It spans ten years, beginning in 2013 and ending in 2023. The main keywords "Floating Solar,"Floating PV,"and "Floating photovoltaics,"which were analyzed using a bibliometric program and graphs, are used to present the results of their analysis. © 2023 IEEE.

Human-nature relationships and its implications on the management of eastern arc water catchments of Tanzania

This study is aimed at understanding the Human–Nature Relationships (HNRs) in the Lower Mngeta and Upper Zigi catchments, as parts of Eastern Arc water catchment areas, in the United Republic of Tanzania. This study employed the Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB) and Norm-Activation Model (NAM) to understand the position of humans in the two catchments’ ecosystems. The study design involved Focus Group Discussions, Key Informant Interview, and Household Questionnaire Surveys. A total of 310 (185 males and 125 females) villagers were involved in this study. Furthermore, four HRN typologies, master over nature, partner with nature, a participant in nature, and steward of nature, were adopted. The study findings indicated that there was no significant difference (X ² test, p > 0.05) in HNRs between the two catchments. Moreover, master over nature typology was dominant in both catchments, with values of 59.4% (n = 200) and 59.5% (n = 85) in Lower Mngeta and Upper Zigi, respectively. The main reason is that HNR is dependent on the nature of the livelihood activities and the mode of subsistence of a particular community. It was also found that the communities in Lower Mngeta and Upper Zigi catchments are mostly dependent on agricultural and hunting activities that highly depended on the two catchment resources. This study, therefore, recommends an increase in the level of community participation in all decision-making activities, as well as an increase in environmental education for sustainable utilization and management of the two catchment resources. © 2023 The Author(s). During COVID-19 pandemic several countries have implemented quarantines in response to the virus’ spread, which was considered an emergency. Thailand was under a state of emergency from January to December 2020, which has had an impact on the state of environment. Based on real-time data from the Pollution Control Department, the impact of COVID-19 lockdown on PM2.5 pollution in Thailand was examined. Inverse Distance Weighted interpolation was used to generate a more accurate visual representation of the PM2.5 pollution through a spatial distribution of atmospheric pollutants across the provinces of Thailand. PM2.5 levels in all considered areas reduced considerably between 2017 and 2020, with the most significant decrease occurring during the lockdown period of April-July in 2020. As the pre-COVID-19 period occurred during late winter in Thailand, the monthly average PM2.5 concentrations in all selected provinces were gradually increased from December 2019 to March 2020. During the lockdown period, the concentration of PM2.5 was reduced in Pathum Thani (48.9%), Samut Sakhon (35.6%) Samut Prakarn (33.6%), and Bangkok (31.7%) The spatial–temporal distribution of the PM2.5 levels in Samut Sakhon and Samut Prakarn provinces were analyzed for October 2020, during the new normal period. The results showed a significant decrease in concentration of up to 31% compared to previous years where industrial operations were situated. This study showed that the government enforced lockdown during COVID-19 pandemic was beneficial in understanding the impact of reduced human activities on anthropogenic air pollutants’ concentrations. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd. 2024.

The objectives of this research are study and evaluate the potential of a Rooftop PV System Installation in Suranaree University of Technology (SUT) by means of considering the basis of polycrystalline silicon and on-grid connected system. Variables of evaluation are namely; the solar radiation on a tilted surface, an area of the PV array, and the efficiency according to the cell temperature. To determine the economic feasibility, Net present value (NPV), Internal rate of return (IRR), Benefit cost ratio (B/C Ratio), Discounted payback period (DPB), Levelized cost of electricity (LCOE) and Sensitivity analysis were employed. The period of this study is specified up to 25 years base on solar cell life time. The result shows that the rooftops of SUT are efficiency. 38 buildings were considered and the result of economics study shows that NPV is Positive, IRR is more than minimum loan rate, B/C Ratio is more than one, DPB is 9.3 years, LCOE is 1.94 baht/unit, and the Sensitivity scenario demonstrates the cost reduction in an installation from 50 to 45 baht/watt. To sum up, the project is quite interesting to invest.

Most energy exchanges take place through the building skin. The skin characteristics play a decisive role in the extent of these exchanges, but they are somewhat more varied in the double skin façade (DSF). Among these characteristics, cavity segmentation has a noticeable effect on the implementation of the DSF in different directions during the hot and cold seasons. The aim of this study was to investigate the role of DSF segmentation in energy consumption and natural ventilation of high-rise buildings in hot and dry climates. This study used DesignBuilder software to study sixty-four segmentation component scenarios in an eight-story residential building in Isfahan, Iran. Moreover, a proposed hybrid model utilizing the hybridization of the Hunger Game Search and Gradient Boosting (HGS-GB) algorithm was employed to estimate energy consumption in various scenarios involving lighting, heating, cooling, and total scenarios. The available outcomes revealed that the HGS-GB model had a better performance in comparison with other individual models, such as Gradient Boosting (GB), Random Forest (RF), and K-nearest neighbors (KNN). The R2 values for lighting, heating, cooling, and total energy estimation were 0.9993, 0.9958, 0.9991, and 0.9922, respectively. The findings of this study suggest the significance of DSF segmentation in energy consumption and natural ventilation in high-rise buildings in hot and dry climates. © 2024 Elsevier Ltd

An innovative methodology is proposed for measuring the resistance of substation grounding grids located in congested areas, particularly those in urban regions. The significant innovation is the use of auxiliary current and potential circuits vertically arranged on the ground. The feasibility of using the Fall of Potential (FoP) Method is experimentally investigated using the reduced model technique and an appropriate measuring electrode setup is proposed. The possibility of measurement using the two auxiliary electrodes, positioned in relation to the grid under test, obeying a ratio of 76%, is also evaluated. The depth of these measuring auxiliary electrodes for reliable measurements was determined from a theoretical study, a series of computer simulations, an experimental study in a reduced model, as well as measurements on a 100 m² grounding grid. The results show the feasibility of using the Fall of Potential (FoP) Methodology as well as the two auxiliary electrodes whose distances to the grid obey the proportion of 76%. © 2023, The Authors. Environmental impacts of small scale industries are still not well investigated, especially for estates where multiple small scale industries are clustered causing cumulative effects potentially impacting most vulnerable groups. This study aimed to investigate the concentrations of heavy metals (Mn, Fe, Ni, Cu, Pb, Al, Zn, and Cr) and the metalloid (As) in surface soils near the intensely active small-scale industrial area in Thailand, assess the contamination levels in the co-located child care center, and estimate potential human health risks from exposure to the heavy metals. Surface soil heavy metal(loid) elements were evaluated across a background area, area near main roads, a small-scale industrial area, and a child care centre. The concentrations of Al were found be the highest at all investigation sites, with the most elevated concentrations observed in the small-scale industrial area. The concentration of Pb in the industrial area reached 1176 mg/kg, exceeding the national standard and acceptable limit. Moreover, the contamination level for Cu, Pb, and Zn in the industrial area imply a considerable risk with enrichment factor EF > 40, and geo-accumulation index Igeo ≥5. Heavy metal levels (Ni, Cu, Pb) in the soil near the road and the child care center were similar, suggesting shared contamination sources. Conversely, Al, Zn, As, and Cr in the child care center had slightly higher concentrations than near the road but lower than the small-scale industrial area, indicating potential industrial influence on metal levels within the child care center. The principal component analysis showed Mn and Fe distributed in the background, while As, Pb, Ni, Cu, Al, Zn, and Cr accumulated in the small-scale industrial area. The findings indicate that small-scale industrial activities contribute to elevated levels of heavy metals in the soil, particularly within the child care center, posing significant ingestion risks, especially for children (HI > 1). Proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs) are among the promising alternatives for clean energy generation, especially when hydrogen is the fuel used. Their operation is still faced with several challenges, and one of them is water accumulation in the cathode compartment. If PEMFCs are operated at temperatures above the boiling point of water, a significant obstacle would be eliminated due to the formation of water in the vapor phase. This prevents water from accumulating in the liquid phase which causes flooding. Therefore, this work aims to develop a novel composite membrane based on zirconium silicate (ZrSiO₄) and Polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) for such high-temperature operation. The composite membrane was synthesized using solution casting, and its structural and chemical properties were characterized using thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) techniques. The ZrSiO₄/PVDF membrane demonstrated a maximum proton conductivity of 2.14 × 10⁻³ S/cm at room temperature with 8 wt% ZrSiO₄, along with a water uptake value of 43.85 %. Consequently, when tested above the boiling point of water, the membrane exhibited a high conductivity of 2.13 × 10⁻³ S/cm at 105 °C. The results suggest the suitability of such zirconium silicate-based composite membranes for fuel cell applications operating above the boiling point of water. © 2024 The Author(s)
