A possible solution for noise attenuation material for urban buses: The downtown São Paulo case study

Urban buses, particularly in large cities, are exposed to significant noise pollution. This paper presents a new family of materials at the micro/nano level designed for urban noise attenuation, specifically for application in urban buses. Melamine foam is combined in series with nanomembranes, creating a composite material that functions as a Helmholtz resonator. As sound waves pass over the nanomembranes, they are disturbed, and the sound resonates within the melamine foam. This interaction reduces the energy of the sound waves and enhances the noise absorption coefficient. In ten cases studied, the average sound absorption coefficient was approximately 89%, with peak frequencies ranging from 2400 Hz to 4300 Hz. The average thickness of the nanomembranes was around 5.0 µm, while the melamine foam had a thickness of 13 mm. The mean noise reduction achieved was about 11 dB, which depends on factors such as the morphology, thickness, and pore size of the nanomembranes. A case study conducted in downtown São Paulo demonstrated that applying these materials to urban buses can significantly reduce interior noise levels. Finally, the proposed system is fully scalable and adaptable for various applications where acoustic insulation is required. © The Author(s) 2025.

A new strategy for virtually designing and analyzing double-double laminates to resist buckling under uniaxial compression or in-plane shear conditions has been proposed. This approach combines the off-the-shelf method for carbon/epoxy prepregs with the master-ply concept. The off-the-shelf method utilizes unidirectional prepregs (0° and 90°) and non-crimped fabrics (±30°, ±45°, and 90°). The strength of this non-dimensional design strategy lies in its simplicity, requiring only two parameters: Tsai’s modulus and the number of repetitions. Results were compared with finite element analyses, showing good agreement in all cases. The double-double formulation not only provides higher buckling loads for both uniaxial compression and in-plane shear but also results in distinct buckling modes. © 2025, American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics Inc, AIAA. This study evaluates a small-scale adaptive solar drying system using nichrome wire to enhance the drying process for Moro-moro fish. The nichrome wire's rapid heating accelerates drying, reduces exposure to pests, and mitigates issues like climate variations and uneven drying. Although mechanical dryers exist, their high costs and limited efficiency restrict use. This adaptable system provides a sustainable and effective method of preserving fish by optimizing drying through steady heat and moisture control. © 2024 IEEE.

Magnesium-based batteries are potential candidates for next-generation rechargeable batteries due to the divalent nature of magnesium cations and the natural abundance of magnesium resources. In this study, the electrochemical activity of Mg-6mass%Al-3mass%Ca anodes combined with Sn was investigated. Thin ribbons of the anode specimens were prepared by a single-roll rapid solidification method. The results showed that the electrochemical activity increased upon adding 1 mass% Sn, while it decreased for 3 mass% Sn. Based on the results of an X-ray diffraction analysis, the addition of Sn led to the formation of Mg2Sn and Ca2Sn phases, which increased the lattice distortion. Scanning electron microscopy observations indicated that these secondary phases were homogeneously distributed for 1 mass% Sn addition, while they were coarsely distributed for 3 mass% Sn. © 2025 The Japan Institute of Light Metals.

This paper addresses a new concept of chiral metastructure the so-called elliptical S-shape chiral. All five groups of metamaterials studied exhibited large anisotropy. This the anisotropic behavior is controlled by the ellipses' eccentricities. Moreover, the anisotropic response is also more evident when the loading axes are considered. For x-axis compressive loading conditions, the stiffness decreases as the ellipse eccentricity increases. The Poisson ratio's magnitude increases with the increase of a/b aspect ratio, showing a very high auxeticity when the ellipse is close to a flat configuration. In this case, the Poisson ratio was near to -18. For y-axis compressive loadings, the stiffness increases with the decrease of a/b aspect ratio leading to a flexible metastructure. The Poisson ratio's values decreases with the increasing of a/b aspect ratio, but all values were near zero (between -0.35 and -0.05). It seems that the transversal section practically does not change when the metastructure is compressed through y-direction. © 2023 by DEStech Publications, Inc. and American Society for Composites. In order to avoid the problems of low accuracy of wheel hub recognition and classification and excessive dependence on template image quality in the process of automatic production of the automobile wheel hub, a vehicle wheel hub recognition method based on Histogram of Oriented Gradient (HOG) and Support Vector Machine (SVM) is proposed. Firstly, the wheel hub images under three different lighting conditions are collected, and the wheel hub images are processed in grayscale;Secondly, the positive and negative samples are made, and hog features are extracted, respectively;Finally, the extracted hog features are trained by SVM classifier, and the trained target classifier is used to recognize the wheel hub photos under three different lighting conditions. The experimental results show that this method has higher recognition accuracy than the traditional template matching method under different lighting conditions. © 2022 IEEE.

This paper addresses the experimental correlations between failure mode morphologies and the chemical changes inside an epoxy-based adhesive nanomodified by carbon nanotubes. This "special" nanocomposite is under a combined loading. i.e., shear and peel stresses, commonly encountered into single lap joints under tension. An increase in intensity on FTIR spectra on chemical functional at wavenumbers ranges 750-835 cm-1, 1170-1250 cm-1 and 1450-1610 cm-1 are related to the ductile-like fracture morphology due to more molecular mobility. At meanwhile, the increase in intensity at 2950-3350 cm-1 wavenumber range is linked to brittle-like morphology fracture. The cohesive failure is associated to the ductile-like failure morphology, while the adhesive failure is related to brittle-like morphology fracture. © Proceedings of the American Society for Composites - 37th Technical Conference, ASC 2022. The studies carried out in the area of cell preservation have been of significant importance in recent years. This process, known as cryopreservation, has been used for decades and aims to preserve various cellular materials at cryogenic temperatures. Different methods allow cryopreservation, where the best known are the slow freezing and vitrification processes. Regardless of the process, it is necessary to use cryoprotective agents (CPAs) in conjunction with the cells to avoid possible cell damage during cryopreservation. Regarding the methods, they differ in their cooling rates and the concentration of CPAs used. According to some studies, the method that has been most studied is that of vitrification, which seeks to increase the cooling rate, reaching values above 20,000 ∘ C/min. Evaporation by a thin film of liquid nitrogen is one of the methods of vitrification, which uses a microstructure with a finned or porous surface for evaporation, and in these conditions cooling rates of up to 150,000 ∘ C/min were found, which shows a significant advance and alternative for cell cryopreservation. © 2022, The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

Flow patterns are found in many processes involving multiphase flows in the industry. This experimental investigation focuses on the behavior of the vorticity fields found in the liquid-vapor interface during flow boiling of R-600a with heat flux varying from 5 to 20 kW/m 2 and fixed mass flux of 890 kg/(m 2 s) at a saturation temperature of 17 ∘ C. Tests were performed in a horizontal tube with 1.0 mm ID. Four different flow patterns were identified based on images, and the vorticity fields were investigated using an optical flow method. © 2022, The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG.
