We consider the question of well-posedness for a general class of semilinear heat equations with initial data in the Morse-Transue subspace of an Orlicz space. Significantly, we obtain our results without imposing growth restrictions on the nonlinearity or the underlying space a priori. The key findings are as follows: a completely new smoothing estimate for the action of the heat semigroup between two arbitrary Orlicz spaces;sufficient conditions for local and global (for small initial data) well-posedness in the Morse-Transue space;a comparison principle in the case of monotone nonlinearities;for nonlinearities enjoying additional structure (e.g. convexity) and growing sufficiently rapidly at infinity (as measured by the variation of log f), an explicit characterisation of a critical Morse-Transue space for local well-posedness. We investigate the use of animal videos (observations) to improve Reinforcement Learning (RL) efficiency and performance in navigation tasks with sparse rewards. Motivated by theoretical considerations, we make use of weighted policy optimization for off-policy RL and describe the main challenges when learning from animal videos. We propose solutions and test our ideas on a series of 2D navigation tasks. We show how our methods can leverage animal videos to improve performance over RL algorithms that do not leverage such observations. © 2022, CC BY.

Topology optimization is an essential tool in computational engineering, for example, to improve the design and efficiency of flow channels. At the same time, Ising machines, including digital or quantum annealers, have been used as efficient solvers for combinatorial optimization problems. Beyond combinatorial optimization, recent works have demonstrated applicability to other engineering tasks by tailoring corresponding problem formulations. In this study, we present a novel Ising machine formulation for computing design updates during topology optimization with the goal of minimizing dissipation energy in flow channels. We explore the potential of this approach to improve the efficiency and performance of the optimization process. To this end, we conduct experiments to study the impact of various factors within the novel formulation. Additionally, we compare it to a classical method using the number of optimization steps and the final values of the objective function as indicators of the time intensity of the optimization and the performance of the resulting designs, respectively. Our findings show that the proposed update strategy can accelerate the topology optimization process while producing comparable designs. However, it tends to be less exploratory, which may lead to lower performance of the designs. These results highlight the potential of incorporating Ising formulations for optimization tasks but also show their limitations when used to compute design updates in an iterative optimization process. In conclusion, this work provides an efficient alternative for design updates in topology optimization and enhances the understanding of integrating Ising machine formulations in engineering optimization. © 2024, CC BY-NC-ND.

As mobile shopping has gradually become the mainstream shopping mode, recommendation systems are gaining an increasingly wide adoption. Existing recommendation systems are mainly based on explicit and implicit user behaviors. However, these user behaviors may not directly indicate users' inner feelings, causing erroneous user preference estimation and thus leading to inaccurate recommendations. Inspired by our key observation on the correlation between pupil size and users' inner feelings, we consider using the change of pupil size when browsing to model users' preferences, so as to achieve targeted recommendations. To this end, we propose PupilRec as a computer-vision-based recommendation framework involving a mobile terminal and a server side. On the mobile terminal, PupilRec collects users' pupil size change information through the front camera of smartphones;it then preprocesses the raw pupil size data before transmitting them to the server. On the server side, PupilRec utilizes the Tsfresh package and Random Forest algorithm to figure out the key time-series features directly implying user preferences. PupilRec then trains a neural network to fit a user preference model. Using this model, PupilRec predicts user preference to obtain a user-product matrix and further simplifies it by singular value decomposition. Finally, the real-time recommendation is achieved by a collaborative filtering module that retrieves recommended contents to users smartphones. We prototype PupilRec and conduct both experiments and field studies to comprehensively evaluate the effectiveness of PupilRec by recruiting 67 volunteers. The overall results show that PupilRec can accurately estimate users' preference and can recommend products users interested in. © 2014 IEEE.

In this paper, an approach to aid in introductory programming courses is presented, focused on students that had never had any contact with computer programming. The approach, that was introduced in a previous paper [3], presents programming concepts using icons and “flowcharts”, and a 3D robotics simulator (CoppeliaSim), that has free educational use. This time, a real version of the simulated robot, built using Arduino and cheap, easily obtainable electronic components, is also presented. The programs to control the robot are developed by graphically constructing flowcharts on the visual editor, and then following the execution of programs using the simulated (or real) robot, step by step. This graphic program editor is named “FluxProg”, and its 2nd version is now available online, with new features comprising variables, arithmetic and logic expressions, thus providing a complete programming environment.

Purpose: The objectives of this study were to create a device with technological development of the self-inflating bag (SIB) equipment to measure the variables tidal volume, peak inspiratory pressure, and inspiratory flow and to evaluate the knowledge of undergraduate students in handling the SIB. To reduce the risks of mortality, length of hospital stay, and infections, SIB is a resource used to ventilate the patient through the inflation of the device, but it is not capable of measuring the ventilatory parameters. Excess ventilation and incorrect handling of the bag can cause lung injury in newborns. Therefore, measuring these parameters can prevent lung injury resulting from inadequate ventilation. Method: This is a cross-sectional and experimental study, with the development of a device SIB that allows the evaluation of variables of neonatal respiratory mechanics that were tested with an artificial lung. It was approved by the Research Ethics Committee and the research was developed in three stages: the first represents the search for scientific articles for the consensus of neonatal ventilatory variables for the construction of the SIB parameters;the second stage depicts the technological development of a device capable of monitoring such variables through the SIB. In the third stage, the content validation of the device with the handling of the SIB was carried out by students of medicine and physiotherapy courses of Brazil. Results: In this work, a device that analyzes the values of the main ventilatory parameters in neonatology was developed and to generate a safety range for the use of the device, curves with a tolerance of 10% up and down were created. All electronic components were coupled to the equipment, with a display that transmits the parameter values. Dynamic Dense Graph Convolutional Network for Skeleton-based Human Motion Prediction

Graph Convolutional Networks (GCN) which typically follows a neural message passing framework to model dependencies among skeletal joints has achieved high success in skeleton-based human motion prediction task. Nevertheless, how to construct a graph from a skeleton sequence and how to perform message passing on the graph are still open problems, which severely affect the performance of GCN. To solve both problems, this paper presents a Dynamic Dense Graph Convolutional Network (DD-GCN), which constructs a dense graph and implements an integrated dynamic message passing. More specifically, we construct a dense graph with 4D adjacency modeling as a comprehensive representation of motion sequence at different levels of abstraction. Based on the dense graph, we propose a dynamic message passing framework that learns dynamically from data to generate distinctive messages reflecting sample-specific relevance among nodes in the graph. Extensive experiments on benchmark Human 3.6M and CMU Mocap datasets verify the effectiveness of our DD-GCN which obviously outperforms state-of-the-art GCN-based methods, especially when using long-term and our proposed extremely long-term protocol. Precondition and Effect Reasoning for Action Recognition

Human action recognition has drawn a lot of attention in the recent years due to the research and application significance. Most existing works on action recognition focus on learning effective spatial-temporal features from videos, but neglect the strong causal relationship among the precondition, action and effect. Such relationships are also crucial to the accuracy of action recognition. In this paper, we propose to model the causal relationships based on the precondition and effect to improve the performance of action recognition. Specifically, a Cycle-Reasoning model is proposed to capture the causal relationships for action recognition. To this end, we annotate precondition and effect for a large-scale action dataset. Experimental results show that the proposed Cycle-Reasoning model can effectively reason about the precondition and effect and can enhance action recognition performance. Neural backdoors represent insidious cybersecurity loopholes that render learning machinery vulnerable to unauthorised manipulations, potentially enabling the weaponisation of artificial intelligence with catastrophic consequences. A backdoor attack involves the clandestine infiltration of a trigger during the learning process, metaphorically analogous to hypnopaedia, where ideas are implanted into a subject's subconscious mind under the state of hypnosis or unconsciousness. When activated by a sensory stimulus, the trigger evokes conditioned reflex that directs a machine to mount a predetermined response. In this study, we propose a cybernetic framework for constant surveillance of backdoors threats, driven by the dynamic nature of untrustworthy data sources. We develop a self-aware unlearning mechanism to autonomously detach a machine's behaviour from the backdoor trigger. Through reverse engineering and statistical inference, we detect deceptive patterns and estimate the likelihood of backdoor infection. We employ model inversion to elicit artificial mental imagery, using stochastic processes to disrupt optimisation pathways and avoid convergent but potentially flawed patterns. This is followed by hypothesis analysis, which estimates the likelihood of each potentially malicious pattern being the true trigger and infers the probability of infection. The primary objective of this study is to maintain a stable state of equilibrium between knowledge fidelity and backdoor vulnerability. © 2024, CC BY.
