The desire to share and unite remote digital assets motivated the development of the classical internet, the enabler of the entire 21st century economy and our modern way of life. As we enter the quantum era, it is to be expected there will be a similar demand for networking quantum assets, motivating a global quantum internet for bringing together the world's quantum resources, leveraging off their exponential trajectory in capability. We present models for quantum networking, how they might be applied in the future, and the implications they will have. Socially, economically, politically and geostrategically, the upcoming era of quantum supremacy will be as significant for the 21st century as the transistor was for the 20th. The inherently different scaling in the computational power of quantum computers fundamentally changes the dynamics of how they will operate in the future. Given their high expected initial cost, a client/server model for outsourcing computation will be essential for enabling the accessibility and proliferation of this technology, and ensuring its economic viability. We therefore anticipate the emergence of cloud quantum computing, a model for outsourcing quantum computations to the network. We argue that economic efficiency will mandate that all future quantum computers be united into a single global virtual quantum computer, offering exponentially more power to all network participants than if they were to keep their resources to themselves. This model for the allocation of computational resources is uniquely quantum, with no classical analogue, completely altering the economic landscape for the future of computation. Given the sensitivity of much of the data to which future quantum computers are going to foreseeably be applied, protocols for encrypted quantum computation will be essential - the outsourcing of computations that neither an eavesdropper nor even the server performing the computation can spy upon. The purpose of this study was lesson support by building a system which IoT based learning material and using it. This system is assumed to use the regular curriculum of primary and secondary education in Japan. We previously examined that apply IoT technology to learning material. That learning material use when experiment with a measurement. And, we designed its management system. Here we describe the outline of IoT based learning material and its management system. Quantification of brain morphology has become an important cornerstone in understanding brain structure. Measures of cortical morphology such as thickness and surface area are frequently used to compare groups of subjects or characterise longitudinal changes. However, such measures are often treated as independent from each other. A recently described scaling law, derived from a statistical physics model of cortical folding, demonstrates that there is a tight covariance between three commonly used cortical morphology measures: cortical thickness, total surface area, and exposed surface area. We show that assuming the independence of cortical morphology measures can hide features and potentially lead to misinterpretations. Using the scaling law, we account for the covariance between cortical morphology measures and derive novel independent measures of cortical morphology. By applying these new measures, we show that new information can be gained;in our example we show that distinct morphological alterations underlie healthy ageing compared to temporal lobe epilepsy, even on the coarse level of a whole hemisphere. We thus provide a conceptual framework for characterising cortical morphology in a statistically valid and interpretable manner, based on theoretical reasoning about the shape of the cortex. Learning performance in inverse Ising problems with sparse teacher couplings

We investigate the learning performance of the pseudolikelihood maximization method for inverse Ising problems. In the teacher-student scenario under the assumption that the teacher's couplings are sparse and the student does not know the graphical structure, the learning curve and order parameters are assessed in the typical case using the replica and cavity methods from statistical mechanics. Our formulation is also applicable to a certain class of cost functions having locality;the standard likelihood does not belong to that class. The derived analytical formulas indicate that the perfect inference of the presence/absence of the teacher's couplings is possible in the thermodynamic limit taking the number of spins N as infinity while keeping the dataset size M proportional to N, as long as α = M/N > 2. Meanwhile, the formulas also show that the estimated coupling values corresponding to the truly existing ones in the teacher tend to be overestimated in the absolute value, manifesting the presence of estimation bias. These results are considered to be exact in the thermodynamic limit on locally tree-like networks, such as the regular random or Erdős-Rényi graphs. This study proposes a long-short term memory (LSTM)-based approach to text emotion recognition based on semantic word vector and emotional word vector of the input text. For each word in an input text, the semantic word vector is extracted from the word 2vec model. Besides, each lexical word is projected to all the emotional words defined in an affective lexicon to derive an emotional word vector. An autoencoder is then adopted to obtain the bottleneck features from the emotional word vector for dimensionality reduction. The autoencoder bottleneck features are then concatenated with the features in the semantic word vector to form the final textual features for emotion recognition. Finally, given the textual feature sequence of the entire sentence, the LSTM is used for emotion recognition by modeling the contextual emotion evolution of the input text. For evaluation, the NLPCC-MHMC-TE database containing seven emotion categories: anger, boredom, disgust, anxiety, happiness, sadness, and surprise was constructed and used. Five-fold cross-validation was employed to evaluate the performance of the proposed method. Experimental results show that the proposed LSTM-based method achieved a recognition accuracy of 70.66%, improving 5.33% compared with the CNN-based method. Besides, the proposed method based on integration of the semantic word vector and emotional word vector of the input text outperformed that using the individual feature vector.

Generative adversarial network (GAN) has achieved impressive success on cross-domain generation, but it faces difficulty in cross-modal generation due to the lack of a common distribution between heterogeneous data. Most existing methods of conditional based cross-modal GANs adopt the strategy of one-directional transfer and have achieved preliminary success on text-to-image transfer. Instead of learning the transfer between different modalities, we aim to learn a synchronous latent space representing the cross-modal common concept. A novel network component named synchronizer is proposed in this work to judge whether the paired data is synchronous/corresponding or not, which can constrain the latent space of generators in the GANs. Our GAN model, named as SyncGAN, can successfully generate synchronous data (e.g., a pair of image and sound) from identical random noise. For transforming data from one modality to another, we recover the latent code by inverting the mappings of a generator and use it to generate data of different modality. In addition, the proposed model can achieve semi-supervised learning, which makes our model more flexible for practical applications.

In clinical diagnosis of mood disorder, a large portion of bipolar disorder patients (BDs) are misdiagnosed as unipolar depression (UDs). Clinicians have confirmed that BDs generally show "reduced affect'' during clinical treatment. Thus, it is expected to build an objective and one-time diagnosis system for diagnosis assistance by using machine-learning techniques. In this study, facial expressions of BD, UD and control group (C) elicited by emotional video clips are collected for exploring temporal fluctuation characteristics of intensities of facial muscles expression among the three groups. The differences of facial expressions among mood disorders are investigated by observing macroscopic fluctuations. To deal with these problems, the corresponding methods for feature extraction and modeling are proposed. From the viewpoint of macroscopic facial expression, action unit (AU) is applied for describing the temporal transformation of muscles. Then, modulation spectrum is used for extracting short-term variation of AU. The multilayer perceptron (MLP)-based disorder prediction model is then applied to obtain the prediction results. For evaluation of the proposed method, 12 subjects for three group are included in the K-fold (K=12) cross validation experiments. The experiment results reached 61.1% classification accuracy, and outperformed the other baseline methods.

The recent advances in instance-level detection tasks lay strong foundation for genuine comprehension of the visual scenes. However, the ability to fully comprehend a social scene is still in its preliminary stage. In this work, we focus on detecting human-object interactions (HOIs) in social scene images, which is demanding in terms of research and increasingly useful for practical applications. To undertake social tasks interacting with objects, humans direct their attention and move their body based on their intention. Based on this observation, we provide an unique computational perspective to explore human intention in HOI detection. Specifically, the proposed human intentiondriven HOI detection (iHOI) framework models human pose with the relative distances from body joints to the object instances. It also utilizes human gaze to guide the attended contextual regions in a weakly-supervised setting. In addition, we propose a hard negative sampling strategy to address the problem of misgrouping. We perform extensive experiments on two benchmark datasets, namely V-COCO and HICO-DET, and show that iHOI outperforms the existing approaches. Bridging vision and natural language is a longstanding goal in computer vision and multimedia research. While earlier works focus on generating a single-sentence description for visual content, recent works have studied paragraph generation. In this work, we introduce the problem of video storytelling, which aims at generating coherent and succinct stories for long videos. Video storytelling introduces new challenges, mainly due to the diversity of the story and the length and complexity of the video. We propose novel methods to address the challenges. First, we propose a context-aware framework for multimodal embedding learning, where we design a Residual Bidirectional Recurrent Neural Network to leverage contextual information from past and future. Second, we propose a Narrator model to discover the underlying storyline. The Narrator is formulated as a reinforcement learning agent which is trained by directly optimizing the textual metric of the generated story. We evaluate our method on the Video Story dataset, a new dataset that we have collected to enable the study. We compare our method with multiple state-of-the-art baselines, and show that our method achieves better performance, in terms of quantitative measures and user study. Copyright © 2018, The Authors.
