Network interfaces are present in a variety of battery powered computer systems, such as notebooks, ultrabooks, tablets and mobile phones. Considering that the battery life is still a constraint, there are opportunities for power management by reducing the power consumption of idle network interfaces. In this work, a dynamic timeout power policy for network interfaces is presented, incorporating workload estimation and a problem optimization at runtime, thus providing power savings and suitable performance.

In extracranial robotic radiotherapy, tumour motion due to respiration is compensated based external markers. Two models are typically used to enable a real-time adaptation. A prediction model, which compensates time latencies of the treatment systems due to e.g. kinematic limitations, and a correlation model, which estimates the internal tumour position based on external markers. We present a novel approach based on multi-task Gaussian Processes (MTGP) which enables an efficient combination of both models by simultaneously learning the correlation and temporal delays between markers. The approach is evaluated using datasets acquired from porcine and human studies. We conclude that the prediction accuracy of MTGP is superior to that of existing methods and can be further increased by using multivariate input data. We investigate the dependency of the number of internal training points and the potential for using the marginal likelihood for model selection.

Understanding the earth as a system requires integrating many forms of data from multiple fields. Builders and funders of the cyberinfrastructure designed to enable open data sharing in the geosciences risk a key failure mode: What if geoscientists do not use the cyberinfrastructure to share, discover and reuse data? In this study, we report a baseline assessment of engagement with the NSF EarthCube initiative, an open cyberinfrastructure effort for the geosciences. We find scientists perceive the need for cross-disciplinary engagement and engage where there is organizational or institutional support. However, we also find a possibly imbalanced involvement between cyber and geoscience communities at the outset, with the former showing more interest than the latter. This analysis highlights the importance of examining fields and disciplines as stakeholders to investments in the cyberinfrastructure supporting science. © 2016 The Author(s).

With the popularity of Social Network Service (SNS) and the increasing of users, individuals' social roles in a social network have become more and more important in recommendation of the personalized services, and in a collective decision-making process as well. In an SNS system, active users may not represent the major opinions among the whole users, and most of the users' opinions may be multifarious. In this study, we consider users' social roles as an important element to support the collective decision-making process. After introducing the social choice theories and collective decision-making model, we present a three-layer model to analyze users' social roles in a hierarchical way, and utilize it to support the collective decision-making process. A case study for COD (Course-Offering Determination) with an application scenario is demonstrated to show the process of how users' social roles are utilized to support the collective decision-making.

Chronic care manages long-term, progressive conditions, while acute care addresses short-term conditions. Chronic conditions increasingly strain health systems, which are often unprepared for these demands. This study examines the burden of conditions requiring acute versus chronic care, including sequelae. Conditions and sequelae from the Global Burden of Diseases Study 2019 were classified into acute or chronic care categories. Data were analysed by age, sex, and socio-demographic index, presenting total numbers and contributions to burden metrics such as Disability-Adjusted Life Years (DALYs), Years Lived with Disability (YLD), and Years of Life Lost (YLL). Approximately 68% of DALYs were attributed to chronic care, while 27% were due to acute care. Chronic care needs increased with age, representing 86% of YLDs and 71% of YLLs, and accounting for 93% of YLDs from sequelae. These findings highlight that chronic care needs far exceed acute care needs globally, necessitating health systems to adapt accordingly. © 2025. The Author(s).

Power policies are widely applied at computer systems such as desktops, notebooks, and smartphones. For example, the timeout policy to turn off the display. A power management policy must be tested by measuring the power consumption of an experimental platform running workloads. Such tests must be fast enough to feedback the development process with valuable information about the power policy performance. In this work, we have presented a methodology for estimating computer systems power consumption for time scaled experiments. Using the proposed methodology, we have reduced the overall time for developing a power management policy.

There exists two types of developers in Open Source Software (OSS) projects: 1) Committers who have permission to commit edited source code to the Version Control System (VCS), 2) Developers who contribute source code but cannot commit to the VCS directly. In order to develop and evolve high quality OSS, projects are always in search of new committers. OSS projects often promote strong developers to become committers. When existing committers find strong developers, they propose their promotion to a committer role. Delaying the committer-promotion might lead to strong developers departing from an OSS project and the project losing them. However early committer-promotion comes with its own slew of risks as well (e.g., the promotion of inexperienced developers). Hence, committer-promotion decisions are critical for the quality and successful evolution of OSS projects. In this paper, we examine the committer-promotion phenomena for two OSS projects (Eclipse and Firefox). We find that the amount of activities by future committers was higher than the amount of activities by developers who did not become committers). We also find that some developers are promoted to a committer role very rapidly (within a few month) while some of developers take over one year to become a committer. Finally, we develop a committer-identification model to assist OSS projects identifying future committers.

Most operating systems implement their own power management techniques, but it is hard to modify or hack their power policies without the source code. Many dynamic power management architectures have been proposed in the literature, but they are not integrated with the underlying OS power manager. In this work, we propose a software framework for user-level power management, with a flexible architecture to be adapted to different policies and integrated with OS power managers.

Simulation has been widely used in modeling engineering systems. A metamodel is a surrogate model used to approximate a computationally expensive simulation model. Extensive research has investigated the performance of different metamodeling techniques in terms of accuracy and/or robustness and concluded no model outperforms others across diverse problem structures. Motivated by this finding, this research proposes a bi-criteria (accuracy and robustness) optimized ensemble framework to optimally identify the contributions from each metamodel (Kriging, Support Vector Regression and Radial Basis Function), where uncertainties are modeled for evaluating robustness. Twenty-eight functions from the literature are tested. It is observed for most problems, a Pareto Frontier is obtained, while for some problems only a single point is obtained. Seven geometrical and statistical metrics are introduced to explore the relationships between the function properties and the ensemble models. It is concluded that the bi-criteria optimized ensembles render not only accurate but also robust metamodels.
