Mobile smart-device ecosystems (e.g., iOS, Android) have democratized innovation and rejuvenated the mobile-device industry. Yet, two key participants of these ecosystems, developers and consumers, continue to face significant challenges. The market is inundated with more than a million apps making the discovery and assessment of apps a daunting task for consumers. The easy substitutability of apps and the ability of consumers to delete apps in their devices at the flick of a finger make app development a hypercompetitive turf for developers. This paper takes an important step in addressing competitive strategies in these hypercompetitive, but potentially lucrative innovation value chains. We conceptualized the takeoff and continued survival of apps as a function of app positioning, developer actions, and user engagement. Empirically validating our conceptualization using lifecycle data of 91,207 apps in the Apple iOS platform, we discuss our insights for competing in the hypercompetitive mobile smart-device platform ecosystems.

Dual-OS communications allow a real-time operating system (RTOS) and a general-purpose operating system (GPOS)-sharing the same processor through virtualization-to collaborate in complex distributed applications. However, they also introduce new threats to the reliability (e.g., memory and time isolation) of the RTOS that need to be considered. Traditional dual-OS communication architectures follow essentially the same conservative approach which consists of extending the virtualization layer with new communication primitives. Although this approach may be able to address the aforementioned reliability threats, it imposes a rather big overhead on communications due to unnecessary data copies and context switches. In this paper, we propose a new dual-OS communications approach able to accomplish efficient communications without compromising the reliability of the RTOS. We implemented our architecture on a physical platform using a highly reliable dual-OS system (SafeG) which leverages ARM TrustZone hardware to guarantee the reliability of the RTOS. We observed from the evaluation results that our approach is effective at minimizing communication overhead while satisfying the strict reliability requirements of the RTOS.

There is a growing demand for high-accuracy and frameless solutions for cranial radiation therapy. Among different approaches for intra-fractional head tracking using X-Ray or MV imaging or Cone Beam CT, optical head tracking in particular promises high spatial and temporal resolution with a minimum of system latency and no additional dose exposition. It may therefore be ideal for motion-compensated or high-accuracy cranial radiation therapy. Nevertheless, up to now optical systems lack accuracy and are therefore only found in prototypes or test setups. Using a consumer-grade optical rangefinder, we have built a test setup to systematically quantify critical error sources for tracking systems based on triangulation. Subsequently, we present and discuss potential solutions to minimize the error.

Communication and information diffusion are typically difficult in situations where centralised structures may become unavailable. In this context, decentralised communication based on epidemic broadcast becomes essential. It can be seen as an opportunity-based flooding for message broadcasting within a swarm of autonomous agents, where each entity tries to share the information it possesses with its neighbours. As an example of applications for such a system, we present simulation results where agents have to coordinate to map an unknown area.
