Over the last few years, the deployment of wireless sensor networks (WSNs) has been fostered in diverse applications. WSN has great potential for a variety of domains ranging from scientific experiments to commercial applications. Due to the deployment of WSNs in dynamic and unpredictable environments, these applications must have potential to cope with variety of faults. This paper proposes an energy-aware fault-tolerant clustering protocol for target tracking applications termed as the Fault-Tolerant Target Tracking (FTTT) protocol. The identification of redundant nodes (RNs) makes sensor node (SN) fault tolerance plausible and the clustering endorsed recovery of sensors supervised by a faulty cluster head (CH). The FTTT protocol intends two steps of reducing energy consumption: first, by identifying RNs in the network;secondly, by restricting the numbers of SNs sending data to the CH. Simulations validate the scalability and low power consumption of the FTTT protocol in comparison with LEACH protocol. © 2010 IEEE.

Dense collection of tiny Sensor Nodes (SNs), equipped with a variety of sensors are able to sense events, compute and communicate the estimations to the end user, form a distributed Wireless Sensor Network (WSN). The advances in WSNs have made it plausible to appraise critical aspects of object tracking WSNs that are continuous monitoring of object track and fault tolerance. This paper presents probabilistic performance evaluation of clustering, redundancy reduction, target tracking and fault tolerance phases of Fault-Tolerant Target Tracking (FTTT) protocol. This type of formal modeling with limited number of SNs helps to plan a scalable network with specific constraints related to the application, for example, object tracking quality, life time of the network, energy consumption, latency, QoS and network throughput. © 2010 IEEE.

This research applies a web-based multiplayer online game to motivate students doing self-assessment when they are studying. The experiment is conducted in the first and second year undergraduate programming language courses in Taiwan. Within the multiplayer online game, students can explore the game world, chat with classmates, and solve quests. The quests in the game are self-assessment items, however when the quest items are presented in game form, students feel they are not taking quiz but playing. We collect students' demographic information and their game-play log to evaluate the effectiveness of such multiplayer assessment game. The results show that gender and having internet at rental place do influence student's intention to play the game. Students who have better academic achievement (i.e. higher scores) also have much more willing to play the game during the semester.

As one of the most important enabling technologies of cloud computing, virtualization brings to HPC good manageability, online system maintenance, performance isolation and fault isolation. Furthermore, previous study on VMM-bypass I/O that virtualizes OS-bypass networks (e.g. Infini- Band) relieved the worry of performance degradation coming along with virtualization. In this paper, we address the scalability challenges imposed upon OS-bypass networks under virtualized environments. The eXtended Reliable Connection (XRC) transport, proposed in modern high-speed interconnection networks to address the scalability problem in large scale applications, would not work in virtualized environments. To solve the problem, we propose VM-proof XRC design to eliminate the scalability gap between virtualized and native environments. Prototype evaluation shows that the virtualization of modern high-speed interconnection networks could get the same raw performance and scalability as in native non-virtualized environment with our VM-proof XRC design. The connection memory scalability shows a potential of 16 times improvement on virtualized clusters composed of 16-core nodes. © 2010 IEEE.

We build a Student-Partner mobile English learning system. We go deep into the campus to do English learning by portable of the mobile. The system offer the GPS function, campus map, camera, messaging, tracking and recording. Students can post the message or add the multimedia which he explore to the device. In the mobile, user can off-line to post the message. In addition, we design two activities, learning English by exploring the campus and presenting their exploring events. According to the questionnaire, students think the context familiarity is useful for learning. © 2010 IEEE.

Lack of overall ecological knowledge structure is a critical reason for learners' failure in keyword-based search. To address this issue, this paper firstly presents the dynamic location-aware and semantic hierarchy (DLASH) designed for the learners to browse images, which aims to identify learners' current interesting sights and provide adaptive assistance accordingly in ecological learning. The main idea is based on the observation that the species of plants and animals are discontinuously distributed around the planet, and hence their semantic hierarchy, besides its structural similarity with WordNet, is related to location information. This study then investigates how different cognitive styles of the learners influence the use of DLASH in their image browsing. The preliminary results show that the learners perform better when using DLASH based image browsing than using the Flickr one. In addition, cognitive styles have more effects on image browsing in the DLASH version than in the Flickr one. © 2010 IEEE.

Finding knowledge on the Web has long been a hot research issue. Today the Web has become a popular medium for publishing news and opinion articles, which are important carriers of human knowledge, especially of social knowledge. Developing techniques of automatically collecting and analysing these articles on a large scale is thus desirable. In this paper we propose techniques for searching for events on the Web, and our techniques have been tested on a large scale web archive. Given an event, or a news topic cared by many people, the purpose of this paper is to find out near-all news stories related to it. First, a novel domain-independent approach of extracting news stories from web pages is proposed which is based on anchor text and is applicable to most websites. Experiments show our approach performs good and is better than another approach we have found. Second, a domain-based method of representing events is proposed in which hundreds of keywords are used to represent an event and compose the query expression. This situation of retrieval is different from most search engines' in that the number of keywords is large. We then propose several retrieval algorithms based on BM25 for the method. Evaluation show that these algorithms perform better than unmodified BM25 in our situation and the best one is chosen as the algorithm of our system. Finally an experimental system has been built on a collection of 2 billion web pages and the running performance is reported, which shows the effectiveness of our approaches. © 2010 IEEE.

The Web is now playing an important part in people's real-life activities. Scientists of not only computer science but also sociology and economics might be interested in mining on information directly related to real-life events, or news-related information on the Web. In this paper we propose a system to enable mining on news-related articles instead of raw web pages. There are functionally two tasks in our system: 1) mining for news-related articles and 2) duplicate elimination. For the first task, a novel approach for determining titles, contents and publication-times of news-related articles is presented. Anchor texts are firstly used to extract titles from HTML bodies and then contents are extracted right after titles. After that, crawl-times and are used to initially compute publication-times for all articles. At last, times extracted from HTML bodies, URLs and anchor texts are used to determine precise publication-times for possible articles. For the second task, a duplicate detection algorithm for news-related articles is described which is base on LCS (longest common subsequence) and achieves both high precision and high recall. The framework of this algorithm has been presented as a general-purpose algorithm for web pages in a previously published paper. In this paper we explain why this algorithm is particularly suitable for news-related articles and present corresponding implementation details. Evaluations have been conducted which show the effectiveness of our approaches. © 2010 IEEE.

In this paper, we analyze the convergence of the adaptive conforming P 1 element method with the red-green refinement. Since the mesh after refining is not nested into the one before, the Galerkin-orthogonality does not hold for this case. To overcome such a difficulty, we prove some quasi-orthogonality instead under some mild condition on the initial mesh (Condition A). Consequently, we show convergence of the adaptive method by establishing the reduction of some total error. To weaken the condition on the initial mesh, we propose a modified red-green refinement and prove the convergence of the associated adaptive method under a much weaker condition on the initial mesh (Condition B).

It is effective to debug software executed in multi processors by analyzing a trace log, but it is inefficient that developers analyze the trace log directly. Therefore, some visualization tools for the trace log had been developed before now, but there are two problems, lacks of general versatility and expandability. To that end, we developed TraceLogVisualizer(TLV), a visualization tool for the trace log that solved those problems. In this paper, we will discuss requirements to achieve general versatility and expandability, and how we achieved them.
