Future home appliances will have many useful built-in functions. A communication network that allows a user to access these built-in functions and to control the appliances is highly desirable. An ad hoc network can be easily deployed to connect these home appliances. For such a home network, ease of use must be given higher consideration. This paper discusses description based ad-hoc network routing where the nodes are given descriptions or keywords such as living room TV, kitchen oven etc. as identifiers. We propose three description based routing mechanisms: single routing cache, directional routing cache, and proportional-directional routing cache. Through simulation, we show that in all three methods the message delivery is 100% success in our configuration, but the amount of misdirected messages experienced by each method is different. The proportional-directional routing cache shows the least message misdirection with most preferable resource usage.

In this paper, we propose an entirely new strategy for dexterous manipulation of a linear flexible object with a high-speed robot arm. The strategy involves manipulating the object at high speed. By moving the robot at high speed, we can assume that the dynamic behavior of the linear flexible object can be obtained by performing algebraic calculations of the robot motion. Based on this assumption, we derive a model of the linear flexible object and confirm the validity of the proposed model. Finally, we perform simulation of dynamic knotting based on the proposed model. Results of an experiment demonstrating dynamic knotting with a high-speed robot arm are shown.

Finding knowledge on the Web has long been a hot research issue. Today the Web has become a popular medium for publishing news and opinion articles, which are important carriers of human knowledge, especially of social knowledge. Developing techniques of automatically collecting and analysing these articles on a large scale is thus desirable. In this paper we propose techniques for searching for events on the Web, and our techniques have been tested on a large scale web archive. Given an event, or a news topic cared by many people, the purpose of this paper is to find out near-all news stories related to it. First, a novel domain-independent approach of extracting news stories from web pages is proposed which is based on anchor text and is applicable to most websites. Experiments show our approach performs good and is better than another approach we have found. Second, a domain-based method of representing events is proposed in which hundreds of keywords are used to represent an event and compose the query expression. This situation of retrieval is different from most search engines’ in that the number of keywords is large. We then propose several retrieval algorithms based on BM25 for the method. Evaluation show that these algorithms perform better than unmodified BM25 in our situation and the best one is chosen as the algorithm of our system. Finally an experimental system has been built on a collection of 2 billion web pages and the running performance is reported, which shows the effectiveness of our approaches.

The Web is now playing an important part in people's real-life activities. Scientists of not only computer science but also sociology and economics might be interested in mining on information directly related to real-life events, or news-related information on the Web. In this paper we propose a system to enable mining on news-related articles instead of raw web pages. There are functionally two tasks in our system: 1) mining for news-related articles and 2) duplicate elimination. For the first task, a novel approach for determining titles, contents and publication-times of news-related articles is presented. Anchor texts are firstly used to extract titles from HTML bodies and then contents are extracted right after titles. After that, crawl-times and are used to initially compute publication-times for all articles. At last, times extracted from HTML bodies, URLs and anchor texts are used to determine precise publication-times for possible articles. For the second task, a duplicate detection algorithm for news-related articles is described which is base on LCS (longest common subsequence) and achieves both high precision and high recall. The framework of this algorithm has been presented as a general-purpose algorithm for web pages in a previously published paper. In this paper we explain why this algorithm is particularly suitable for news-related articles and present corresponding implementation details. Evaluations have been conducted which show the effectiveness of our approaches.

Lack of overall ecological knowledge structure is a critical reason for learners' failure in keyword-based search. To address this issue, this paper firstly presents the dynamic location-aware and semantic hierarchy (DLASH) designed for the learners to browse images, which aims to identify learners' current interesting sights and provide adaptive assistance accordingly in ecological learning. The main idea is based on the observation that the species of plants and animals are discontinuously distributed around the planet, and hence their semantic hierarchy, besides its structural similarity with WordNet, is related to location information. This study then investigates how different cognitive styles of the learners influence the use of DLASH in their image browsing. The preliminary results show that the learners perform better when using DLASH based image browsing than using the Flickr one. In addition, cognitive styles have more effects on image browsing in the DLASH version than in the Flickr one.

In the existing research, the method using a camera to get the vision information is often found. But, in the boundary area of a non-contact phase and a contact phase, there are problem that lack of sensor information because the influence of occlusion comes up to surface. We devise to introduce the proximity sensor in this area. And we call the robot hand which is equipped with proximity, tactile and slip sensor “intelligent robot hand”. Slip-detecting tactile sensors are essential for achieving human-like gripping motion with a robot hand. In previous research, we developed a flexible, thin and lightweight slip sensor that exploits the characteristics of pressure conductive rubber. However, using this sensor, it was difficult to distinguish between object slip and a change in the normal force. Therefore, in the present research, we investigated a method for identifying object slip by analyzing the frequency components of the output signal from the sensor. As a result, we found that high-frequency components of 1 kHz or more are included in the complex voltage signal generated by object slip. Therefore, by using this high-frequency component, we developed a simple sensor that distinguished between both contact and initial slip with high sensitivity.
