Traditional simulators cannot meet the requirement of modeling large scale networks due to their deficiency in scalability. In this paper, we present a new simulator, namely EasiSim, for sensor networks on a large scale. EasiSim is featured by a structure-based modeling method and a hierarchical organization of the relevant functional components, including nodes, topology and scenario. The nodes are organized into a three-dimensional sorted list (3D list), which enables the node to process all the concurrent events in one batch, and therefore the running time may be reduced by an order of magnitude. Integrated with the other two upper layer components, which are topology and scenario, the proposed node organization method based on the 3D list makes the simulator not only scalable but also extensible. Moreover, we propose a visualization scheme based on a client/server model which separates the graphical user interface (GUI) from the simulation engine, and therefore the scalability of the simulator will not be decreased. The performance of EasiSim is evaluated through extensive simulations and compared with ns-2 in terms of real running time and memory usage. The results show that EasiSim takes less time and less memory than ns-2 to complete simulations with the same number of nodes during a same configured simulation time.

Slip detecting tactile sensors is essential to achieving a human-like gripping motion with a robot hand. Up until now, we have developed flexible, thin and lightweight center of pressure (CoP) sensor. The sensor, constructed of pressure conductive rubber sandwiched between two sheets of conductive film, is able to detect the center position of the load distribution and the total load. Recently, detection of initial slip has been shown to be possible. However the detection principles are unclear. Therefore, we carried out verification experiments of the slip detection properties of the CoP sensor and the detection principle. In the results, we found a change in electrical conductivity produced with a shear deformation of the pressure conductive rubber. In this paper, we will discuss the slip detection properties of the CoP sensor and detection principle.

A tactile sensor is developed with the aim of covering a robotpsilas entire structure, while reducing wiring requirement and ensuring high-speed response. There are only 4 signal wires from the sensor. The sensor response time is nearly constant (within 1 ms) regardless of the number of detection elements, their placements or sensor areas. In this paper, the principles behind the operation of this sensor and the results of experiments using the sensor are described.

This paper develops a context-awareness learning path planner. The learning path planner constructs suitable learning path for individual student according to his/her misconceptions of the learning objects and the distances in the real world. Beside the remedy learning path, the planner also provides two guidance messages to students, the moving guidance message and the learning guidance messages. The moving guidance messages are used to lead students traveling from one learning spot to another. The learning guidance messages are used to guide students observing the specific part of the learning objects in order to clear their misconceptions. At the end of this paper, an example is showing how the planner works for learning in a museum.

Ubiquitous learning extends e-learning from indoor to outdoor but also overcomes the weakness of mobile learning which only provides the specific domain knowledge to learners in particular learning environment. A ubiquitous learning environment covers the knowledge of different domains, hence, how to offer individual learner the learning sequence according to the learner's preference is an important issue. In order to solve the research issue, this paper first builds a context-awareness knowledge structure to store the different domain knowledge in a ubiquitous learning environment. After that, with pre-built stories and learning objects' characteristics, the system can aware of what domain knowledge learners are interesting with. Several exhibition rooms and artifacts in museum are used to demonstrate the idea of this research.

The clinical symptoms of metabolic disorders are rarely apparent during the neonatal period, and if they are not treated early, irreversible damage, such as mental retardation, or even death, may occur. Therefore, the practice of newborn screening is important to the prevention of permanent disabilities in newborns. In this paper, we propose a newborn screening system that uses Support Vector Machine (SVM) classification techniques to evaluate raw data on the concentrations of metabolic substances obtained from tandem mass spectrometry (MS/MS) to determine if a newborn has a metabolic disorder. As per the concept of Service-Oriented Architecture (SOA), we designed the system using web services techniques, which are suitable for integrating heterogeneous platforms, protocols, and applications. It can be integrated seamlessly into National Taiwan University Hospital Information systems (HIS) or other related HIS. © 2008 IEEE.

In this paper, we present a parallelization of a filtering algorithm related to non-linear anisotropic diffusion, used to enhance the performance of an application in a parallel distributed system. The anisotropic diffusion is a well-established technique for image enhancement by means of diffusivity functions, which act as border attenuators. However, it requires a high computational cost when a large amount of data is used. The proposed implementation was parallelized considering both point-to-point and collective communications, adopting the MPI paradigm. Results from both approaches indicate that the proposed algorithm has reached interesting levels of performance (81% and 93% of efficiency, respectively) when compared to the execution of one process in a single computer node. In addition, our results indicate an enhancement of around 21% utilizing the collective communication strategy when compared to point-to-point communication.

Emerging 64 bitOSpsilas supply a huge amount of memory address space that is essential for new applications using very large data. It is expected that the memory in connected nodes can be used to store swapped pages efficiently, especially in a dedicated cluster which has a high-speed network such as 10 GbE and Infiniband. In this paper, we propose the distributed large memory system (DLM), which provides very large virtual memory by using remote memory distributed over the nodes in a cluster. The performance of DLM programs using remote memory is compared to ordinary programs using local memory. The results of STREAM, NPB and Himeno benchmarks show that the DLM achieves better performance than other remote paging schemes using a block swap device to access remote memory. In addition to performance, DLM offers the advantages of easy availability and high portability, because it is a user-level software without the need for special hardware. To obtain high performance, the DLM can tune its parameters independently from kernel swap parameters. We also found that DLMpsilas independence of kernel swapping provides more stable behavior.

Therefore, practicing the newborn screening is essential to prevent newborns from these damages. In the paper, we propose a newborn screening system using Support Vector Machines (SVM) classification techniques to evaluate, interpret, and determine whether a newborn has metabolic disorder diseases. The raw data, i.e., substances concentrations, were collected from the Tandem Mass Spectrometry (MS/MS). In addition, based on the concept of Service-Oriented Architecture (SOA), we design the system under Web Services .NET environment. The system provides features including heterogeneous platforms, protocols, as well as applications. It can be integrated seamlessly into National Taiwan University Hospital Information systems later.
