This research addresses a major shortcoming in today's analysis techniques. Neither structured nor object-oriented analysis techniques provide a formal process to identify relationships in a system being modeled. Existing techniques leave the relationship determination implicit; they are supposed to appear as a byproduct of the other analysis activities. We propose a comprehensive, systematic, domain-independent analysis technique, relationship analysis (RA), which focuses exclusively on a domain's relationship structure. RA serves two major purposes. First, it helps users, analysts and designers develop a deeper understanding of the application domain through making the relationships explicit. Second, RA results in fuller and richer application analyses and designs. Integration of RA with the object oriented analysis techniques like UP can provide a complete system architect solution.

The purpose of this paper is to propose visual models for a Web application using Java and XML related technologies. We consider a Web application that uses 3-tier architecture and each tier is distributed onto Web, application, and data base servers. In the Web applications, various Java and XML related technologies are employed in the form of different languages: client-side script language, server-side script language, object-oriented programming language, markup language, style sheet language, data language, schema definition language, etc. When diverse technologies are applied to a Web application, software engineers need to understand how the components using the technologies are interrelated in terms of software architecture. By applying the RUP with UML to the Web application, we show how visual models can be constructed for the Web application. Even, we show that we can model components in the Web application using non object-oriented languages such as script, markup, style sheet, schema definition, and data languages. In order to compare the modeling complexity of components, we propose a degree of modeling complexity based upon two criteria - the degree of language dependency and the degree of location dependency. Through the comparison criteria, we try to quantify how relatively difficult it is for us to model which components. Based upon the degree of modeling complexity, it is relatively difficult to model XHTML among components using non object-oriented languages. Among Java related technologies, since JSP has a higher degree of language dependency and a higher degree of location dependency, it is more difficult for us to model the JSP components.

Research attempting to merge human and mechanical systems through a nervous system is one of the most dynamic fields in interface technology. Recently, artificial cochlear and retinal nerves were connected via a nervous system. However, there has been no report concerning the replacement of human tactile sensation by artificial sensors connected to the tactile sensory nerve system. The present study reports the development of a system which enables the touch strength applied to a robot hand to be sensed and applied to the hand of a human operator via the microstimulation method. The operator controls the grasping action of a robot hand equipped with tactile sensors at a remote location via a network. The contact information between an object and the robot hand is transmitted via the network, and the tactile sensory nerve of the operator is stimulated by a microelectrode. The force applied to the robot hand can be sensed as an applied force to the hand of the human operator. Applications of the proposed system include the presentation of tactile perception in remote manipulation. In addition, the proposed system is an effective method for transmitting sensation from artificial limbs. The present paper describes the experimental system and results.

This paper describes an approach to build a communicative language-teaching model, in which we observe and control the system-learner interactions. The focus of this research is on a mechanism for modeling the knowledge state of the student so that the system is able to tailor its feedback to suit individual strengths and weaknesses. The primary contribution of this research is that the new teaching model can automatically support the learner's communication gaps during learning and communication processes. © 2002 IEEE.

The large-scale adoption of computer mediated communication technologies has resulted in what has been described as "mass interaction": shared discourse between hundreds, thousands or more individuals. A number of theoretical papers have made the argument that because of the existence of various technological and psychological constraints, the forms that mass interaction takes, can be understood partly in terms of system dynamics. In particular, it has been suggested that user information overload results in nonlinear feedback loops which impacts on discourse structure. This paper describes an empirical examination of three hypothesized effects of such loops by the analysis of 2.65 million USENET messages posted to 600 newsgroups over a 6-month period. Statistical analysis of the data demonstrated the existence of the hypothesized effects and support the assertion that individual 'information overload' coping strategies have an observable impact on mass interaction discourse dynamics. This in turn suggests that the usability of computer mediated communication technologies can be examined in terms of group-level usability. © 2002 IEEE.

A novel method is provided for the representation and comparison of boundaries of two-dimensional objects. The work builds upon the rotating squares algorithm of Donafee and Maple (2000), a method based upon the marching cubes algorithm of Lorensen and Cline (1987). The rotating squares method for representing and comparing the boundaries of two-dimensional objects differs from standard polygonal approximations of objects in the sense that, though more space is required for data storage, there is no loss of data as is the case with approximations. This work presents a new method for polygonal approximation and details of a hybrid method whereby polygonal approximations are used for initial boundary comparisons and then the exact data is used for further investigation.

In this paper, we present the steady state analysis of the p-power algorithm for an adaptive IIR notch filter with constrained poles and zeros for the case when p=3 and the sinusoidal signal is contaminated with additive Gaussian noise. We first derive two difference equations for the convergence of the mean and the Mean Square Error (MSE), and then give the steady state estimation bias and MSE. Stability conditions based on the step size value are also discussed.

The challenge of human-computer interaction forces educationalists to think of new ways to understand the social, historical and contextual nature of learning. Discussion and exchange of ideas enable learners to learn together. However, the granularity of the Web-based learning context is extensive; consequently, e-courseware design faces new dilemmas. Only through targeted research will it be known with any certainty whether Web-based learning gives rise to a new type of learning dissonance. It has been proposed that converged theoretical paradigms that underpin particular digitised or context-mediated learning systems are forcing learners into new ways of thinking. This paper presents an overview of the plans for an experimental project designed to understand the ontological requirements for experiential instructional environments. This project is a joint research initiative involving three Universities in the Asia/Pacific region. Results will be used to inform educationalists interested in developing instructional strategies for a global community.

A fuzzy logic based similarity measure is introduced as a criterion for the identification of structure in data. An important characteristic of the proposed approach is that cluster prototypes are formed and evaluated in the course of the optimization without any a-priori assumptions about the number of clusters. The intuitively straightforward compound optimization criterion of maximizing the overall similarity between data and the prototypes while minimizing the similarity between the prototypes is adopted. It is shown that the partitioning of the pattern space obtained in the course of the optimization is more intuitive than the one obtained for the standard FCM. The local properties of clusters (in terms of the ranking order of features in the multidimensional pattern space) are captured by the weight vector associated with each cluster prototype. The weight vector is then used for the construction of interpretable information granules.
