The paper describes a course supported by a hypermedia language-learning environment, called "AcademicEnglish" based on a communicative language teaching approach, for EFL/ESL academicians to improve their communicative competence in academic contexts, and shows the design and implementation of the courseware in this environment. To support our hypotheses in building such an environment, we conducted a questionnaire survey of the difficulties in academic language learning. Moreover, we have explored the research findings of SLA from the educators' and learners' points of view. The focus is to present our approach in communicative-oriented courseware development. Based on our hypotheses, we built an illustrative prototype system, which intends to allow learning goal communication, learning activity negotiation and collaboration between learners.

Molecular dynamics simulations (MD) have become very important in physics and chemistry. In this paper, we propose dynamic grouping of particles (DGP) for effective parallel processing of short-range MD. DGP is based on a cyclic process of grouping the particles that are within a registration distance of each other. Such a particle group defines a parallel task that can be processed independently during the registration step. We have implemented our method on SR2201, a loosely coupled parallel processor. Experimental results show that DGP is twice as fast as a conventional method based on cell partitioning.

Java has reinvigorated the debate on the `best' language to use for CS1. Much of the controversy centers on the goals of CS1, specific language constructs that either hinder or support the first formal introduction to programming, and, even, `real-world' relevance. Missing from typical discussions is the effect of the language choice in CS1 on CS2 and subsequent courses in the CS curriculum. In all such dialogues, it is important to note the characteristics of the department at hand. While many programs can afford to choose a language (such as Scheme) purely for pedagogical reasons, others (if not most), due to pressure from students, industry, advisory boards, select a language with some market appeal. Small departments that serve students who expect an immediate transition to a professional job typically choose a traditional procedural language like C, Pascal, Modula-2, or a popular OO language like C++, Java, Ada95, or Visual Basic. Hence, we focus here on the choice of one of these languages, and the resulting effects on students' progression in the CS curriculum.

This paper describes the results of the working group investigating the issues of empirical studies for evolving systems. The groups found that there were many issues that were central to successful evolution and this concluded that this is a very important area within software engineering. Finally nine main areas were selected for consideration. For each of these areas the central issues were identified as well as success factors. In some cases success stories were also described and the critical factors accounting for the success analyzed. In some cases it was later found that a number of areas were so tightly coupled that it was important to discuss them together.

Investigations conducted in three separate countries by four research groups on the use and effectiveness of CASE within industry are reported. Comparisons are drawn between the three sets of research findings, and similarities and differences in the impact of CASE within the different countries are identified. The report combines the experience of the authors, and provides a wider insight into the use and effectiveness of CASE tools on a worldwide scale.
