The development of programs for parallel architectures focusing to achieve high indices of performance is a hard task. The programmer must deal with two classes of problems, one related to describing the application concurrency and data dependencies, and other related to exploiting efficiently the processing resources of the architecture, in order to obtain an efficient implementation for a specific hardware configuration. Since cluster technology allows building parallel computers are highly scalable-particularly in terms of number of nodes, processors and amount of memory-programming and execution levels must be considered independently to achieve performance portability. This paper presents Anahy, an environment for exploiting High Performance computing on cluster architectures. It is highlighted the Anahy programming interface and some features of its implementation as well as a performance evaluation. © 2005 IEEE.

The lattice cellular Potts model is widely used to represent physical and biological cellular systems. Standard implementations of this model in the literature employ inefficient Monte Carlo protocols to select elements (labels) of the lattice storing the investigated system. Recently, we proposed a new parallel algorithm, the Random Walker algorithm (RW), that can generate speedups from 3 to 10 times in simulations of this model. In this paper we present a distributed implementation of the RW algorithm exploiting parallel architectures. Our tests in a computer cluster show speedups between 5.7 and 15.6 in relation to the distributed standard algorithm. © 2006 IEEE.

Accordingly with the World Health Organization, heart disease, chronic respiratory diseases, cancer and diabetes are the most common chronic diseases and one of the leading causes of the mortality in the world. In such cases we need more than patient engagement to help to control of the disease, community and health organizations support is also desirable. These roles must support the patients' self-management activities, making them feel confident and motivated. This support can be accomplished by ubiquitous computing. The ubiquitous computing gives conditions to help chronic diseases patients in the management of their activities, offering support to them anytime, anywhere. In this context, this article presents U'Ductor, a model for supporting ubiquitous chronic care management, whose goal is to help the integration between patient and community resources. The U'Ductor gives a step forward in relation to the studied related works by integrating patients, community resources and community members. Those features were not completely explored in the studied works in the way we employ in U'Ductor. An implementation of the model was evaluated by a chronic patient, which gave a positive feedback about it. © 2012 IEEE.

New information and communication technologies enable a better management of the available resources in a smart city. Leaders need tools to analyze data for better decisions, anticipate problems and resolve them proactively. In this context, this article proposes a simulation tool to analyze the interaction of typical cities occurrences like criminal and police. The information of both occurrences, including their densities, are inserted and visualized on a city map. Each record is marked on the GPS point where it happened. From these inputs data, the interactions are modeled by Voronoi Diagrams. The occurrences change their position according to the size area of the opposite event. In this way, crimes runway from police and police catch crimes occurrences. As results, we show that a large increase of police actions will not influence quantitatively in the reduction of criminal occurrences out of a critical zone. © 2014 IEEE.

Spectral Model for Soybean Yield Estimate Using MODIS/EVI Data

Attaining reliable and timely agricultural estimates is very important everywhere, and in Brazil, due to its characteristics, this is especially true. In this study, estimations of crop production were made based on the temporal profiles of the Enhanced Vegetation Index (EVI) obtained from Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) images. The objective was to evaluate the coupled model (CM) performance of crop area and crop yield estimates based solely on MODIS/EVI as input data in Rio Grande do Sul State, which is characterized by high variability in seasonal soybean yields, due to different crop development conditions. The resulting production estimates from CM were compared to official agricultural statistics of Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE) and the National Company of Food Supply (CONAB) at different levels from 2000/2001 to 2010/2011 crop years. Results obtained with CM indicate that its application is able to generate timely production estimates for soybean both at municipality and local levels. Validation estimates with CM at State level obtained R2 = 0.95. Combining all cropping years at municipality level, estimates were highly correlated to official statistics from IBGE, with R2 = 0.91 and RMSD = 10,840 tons. Spatially interpolated comparisons of yield maps obtained from the CM estimates and IBGE data also showed visual similarity in their spatial distribution. Local level comparisons were performed and presented R2 = 0.95. Implications of this work point out that time-series analysis of production estimates are able to provide anticipated spatial information prior to the soybean harvest.

Microservices-based architectures aim to divide the application’s functionality into small services so that each one of them can be scaled, managed, implemented, and updated individually. Currently, more and more microservices are used in application modelling, making them compatible with resource elasticity. In the literature, solutions employ elasticity to improve application performance;however, most of them are based on CPU utilisation metrics and only on reactive elasticity. In this context, this article proposes the hybrelastic model, which combines reactive and proactive elasticity with dynamically calculated thresholds for CPU and network metrics. The article presents three contributions in the context of microservices: 1) combination of two elasticity policies;2) use of more than one elasticity evaluation metric;3) use of dynamic thresholds to trigger elasticity. Experiments with hybrelastic demonstrate 10.31% higher performance and 20.28% lower cost compared to other executions without hybrelastic. Copyright © 2024 Inderscience Enterprises Ltd.

OpenStack is versatile and popular, allowing full customization for creating private or public IaaS clouds. This work addresses a network traffic analysis and characterization for the management domain inside OpenStack clouds. We conduct an induced lifecycle to execute virtual machine (VM)-related tasks, measure the traffic, and identify the services behind the traffic generated by these operations. Also, we analyze the impact of different images of operating systems (OSs) and VM’s flavor in the measured traffic. Moreover, we observe that predicting the volume of network traffic from operations, such as creation and shelving instances of VMs, helps estimate bandwidth boundaries, avoiding bottlenecks, for example. © 2023, The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd.

The physiological signs are a reliable source to identify stress states, and wearable sensors provide precise identification of physiological signs associated with the stress occurrence. The literature review shows that the use of physiological signs as a source for stress patterns identification is still a critical investigation subject. Few studies evaluate the effect of combining several different signals and the implications of the data acquisition procedures and details. This article’s objective is to investigate the possible integration of data obtained from heart rate variability, electrocardiographic, electrodermal activity, and electromyography to detect stress patterns, considering a new experimental protocol to data acquisition. The data acquisition involved the Trier Social Stress Test, wearable sensor monitoring, and complementary stress perception instruments, resulting in a publicly available dataset. This dataset was evaluated using different machine learning classifiers, considering the obtained annotated data and exploring different physiological features and their combinations. © 2020, Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

This paper aims at presenting an architectural model proposal for a novel Mobile Payment System, called 4iPay. This work considers the following premises: independence of device, location, carrier and cardholder to meet the needs of executing payment transactions in ubiquitous commerce. Our proposal considers the convergence of concepts of ubiquity, unity, universality and unison to form the proposed model. This article describes the model, implementation, preliminary assessments and requirements for mobile payment in ubiquitous environments. We developed a prototype of 4iPay using Android smart phones. The prototype was evaluated in three different scenarios. © 2012 IEEE.

Protein structure prediction in three dimensions represents a fundamental challenge in Structural Bioinformatics. Leveraging problem-specific information such as fragment insertion, secondary structure, and contact maps can significantly enhance the exploration of the search space. In this study, an evolutionary algorithm is introduced, which incorporates such problem information for protein structure prediction. The proposed method employs a dynamic speciation technique alongside fragment insertion to foster population diversity. To ensure a rich variety of fragments, a fragment library is constructed using the Rosetta Quota protocol. Additionally, information from contact maps and secondary structure is integrated into two selection strategies to facilitate a more thorough exploration of the conformational search space. The results of an experimental evaluation involving 9 proteins are presented, demonstrating competitive performance compared to existing literature. Evaluation metrics include RMSD, GDT, and processing time. © 2024 IEEE.
