Background: Human exposure to cadmium has various effects on health, especially on male reproductive organs. Although it is widely known that prenatal maternal cadmium exposure can affect birth outcomes, the effect of paternal exposure to cadmium remains unclear. Objectives: This study aimed to evaluate the effect of paternal cadmium exposure on fetal growth by considering maternal cadmium exposure and exposure to other heavy metals, namely mercury and lead. Methods: The Mothers and Children's Environmental Health (MOCEH) study is a prospective birth cohort study in Korea. Overall, 1313 families (father-mother-child triple) without child abnormalities and who completed paternal whole blood cadmium assessments were included in this study. Families were divided into two subgroups based on the blood sampling periods, namely early and late pregnancy. Subjects were selected as follows: one family triple with a high level of paternal cadmium and two triples with low levels of paternal cadmium, using the method of propensity score matching. And linear regression analyses were performed. Results: The group with high paternal cadmium exposure (80% or more;1.93 μg/L) had lower birth weight infants compared to the group with low cadmium concentrations (β(se) = −0.21(0.10);p-value = 0.0283). After stratification by infant sex, prenatal paternal cadmium exposure significantly reduced the birth weight of females in subgroups of different sampling times, namely early pregnancy (β(se) = −0.52 (0.22);p-value = 0.0170) and late pregnancy (β(se) = −0.43 (0.18);p-value = 0.0160). Finally, after performing propensity score matching in the early pregnancy measurement group, it was found that the prenatal exposure of father to cadmium significantly reduced birth weight in females (β(se) = −0.72(0.25);p-value = 0.0047). Background: Although emerging evidence suggests that PM2.5 is linked to neurological symptoms (NSs) via neuroinflammation, relevant studies are scarce. This study aimed to investigate the risks and excess costs of hospital admission for five NSs—fatigue, headache, dizziness, convulsion, and paralysis—attributable to long-term exposure to PM2.5 in New York State, ***: We analyzed the New York Statewide Planning and Research Cooperative system (SPARCS) from 2010 to 2016. A Bayesian hierarchical model with integrated nested Laplace approximations was performed to estimate the risks and excess costs of hospital admission for NSs due to long-term exposure to PM2.5 at the county ***: A 1 µg/m3 increase in lag 0–1 years PM2.5 was associated with an increased risk of headache and convulsion by 1.06 (1.01, 1.11) and 1.04 (1.01, 1.06), respectively. The excess hospital admission cost for five NSs attributable to lag 0–1 years PM2.5 above the new World Health Organization guideline (annual standard: 5 µg/m3) was $200.24 (95% CI: 6.00, 376.96) million during 2011–2016, recording the highest for convulsion ($153.73 [95% CI: 63.61, 244.19] million).Conclusions: This study provides quantitative estimates of risks and excess costs for NSs attributable to long-term PM2.5 and suggests that policies that reduce long-term PM2.5 concentration in accordance with the new WHO air quality guidelines can yield substantial health and economic benefits related to NSs in the New York State population. © 2023, The Authors. Heavy metal concentration in pregnant women affects neurocognitive and behavioral development of their infants and children. The majority of existing research focusing on pregnant women's heavy metal concentration has considered individual environmental factor. In this study, we aim to comprehensively consider lifestyle, food, and environmental factors to determine the most influential factor affecting heavy metal concentration in pregnant women. The Ko-CHENS (Korean CHildren health and ENvironmental Study) is a nationwide prospective birth cohort study in South Korea enrolling pregnant women from 2015 to 2020. A total of 5458 eligible pregnant women were included in this study, and 897 variables were included in questionnaire comprising: maternal general information, indoor and living environment, dietary habits, health behavior, exposure to chemicals. Lead, cadmium and mercury concentration on blood were measured in early, late pregnancy and in cord blood at birth. Variables that might be related to heavy metal concentrations were included in machine learning models. Random forest and XGBoost machine learning models were conducted for predictions. Both models had similar but better performance than multiple linear regression. Kimchi (β = 1.55), seaweed (β = 0.40), fatty fish (β = 1.55), intakes respectively affected lead, cadmium, and mercury exposure through early, late pregnancy and cord blood. © 2025

Background: Recent studies have reported that air pollution is related to kidney diseases. However, the global evidence on the risk of death from acute kidney injury (AKI) owing to air pollution is limited. Therefore, we investigated the association between short-term exposure to air pollution—particulate matter ≤ 2.5 μm (PM2.5), ozone (O3), and nitrogen dioxide (NO2)—and AKI-related mortality using a multi-country dataset. Methods: This study included 41,379 AKI-related deaths in 136 locations in six countries during 1987–2018. A novel case time-series design was applied to each air pollutant during 0–28 lag days to estimate the association between air pollution and AKI-related deaths. Moreover, we calculated AKI deaths attributable to non-compliance with the World Health Organization (WHO) air quality guidelines. Results: The relative risks (95% confidence interval) of AKI-related deaths are 1.052 (1.003, 1.103), 1.022 (0.994, 1.050), and 1.022 (0.982, 1.063) for 5, 10, and 10 µg/m3 increase in lag 0–28 days of PM2.5, warm-season O3, and NO2, respectively. The lag-distributed association showed that the risk appeared immediately on the day of exposure to air pollution, gradually decreased, and then increased again reaching the peak approximately 20 days after exposure to PM2.5 and O3. We also found that 1.9%, 6.3%, and 5.2% of AKI deaths were attributed to PM2.5, warm-season O3, and NO2 concentrations above the WHO guidelines. Conclusions: This study provides evidence that public health policies to reduce air pollution may alleviate the burden of death from AKI and suggests the need to investigate the several pathways between air pollution and AKI death. © 2023 The Author(s)

Background Brain microstructure, as measured by diffusion MR imaging (dMRI), is an early biomarker of Alzheimer’s disease (AD) and has been previously demonstrated to predict whole brain atrophy and cognition. The network-based neurodegeneration hypothesis posits that the onset of AD occurs within key vulnerable regions, whose network connectivity guides the spread of atrophy into new regions. Graph convolutional network (GCN) models can mimic this spread through its convolution process. Here we present a GCN-based model to predict future individual nodal atrophy and disease progression across the AD spectrum using structural connectome. Method We analyzed 371 participants with baseline dMRI scans (154 cognitively normal (CN), 161 mild cognitive impairment (MCI), 56 AD) and longitudinal T1 scans (2.7±1.2 years) from the ADNI study. To predict annual nodal atrophy rates (126 nodes) from baseline structural connectivity (SC), we constructed a two-layer GCN followed by multilayer perceptron (GCN-MLP). Five-fold nested cross-validation and Optuna were used for hyperparameter tuning. We applied the trained GCN-MLP model to predict future disease progression via transfer learning. GNNExplainer was used to identify the predictive SC features for atrophy or cognition. The GCN-MLP model was validated in another independent dataset from Singapore (MACC) with 226 participants (61 CN, 112 MCI, 53 AD, follow-up period of T1 scans (3.1±1.3 years)) using transfer learning. Result The proposed GCN-MLP model predicted the annual rate of regional atrophy at the individual level in the main (R = 0.5407±0.0480; MAE = 0.0013±0.0001; EV = 0.2930±0.0516) and validation (R = 0.5323±0.0564; MAE = 0.0009±0.0001; EV = 0.2808±0.0559) datasets (Table 1; Figure 1). Objectives:Many cancer biomarkers such as the circulating tumor cells/microemboli (CTCs/CTM) have been reported significant associations with clinical outcomes. However, different biomarkers have different sensitivities and specificities for cancer types and cohort patients, and synergistic effects between certain biomarkers have also been observed, leading to the inaccurate, fluctuating, and even controversial results when multiple biomarkers are analyzed together. In this paper, a novel combinational index, P-score, was developed for monitoring and predicting the disease condition of lung cancer patients during follow-up visits. Materials and methods:There were totally 13 return patients with 54 blood samples involved in this study to examine the number of CTC and CTM. Information from one group of 7 patients including 27 blood samples with published clinical data was employed to develop while those from another group of 4 patients containing 14 blood samples with unpublished clinical data were used to validate the P score in prediction. Enumerations were based on immunofluorescent staining images. Distributions of CTC/CTM and their frequencies in stratified patients were carefully examined and analyzed the ROC curve and AUC value to develop the P score and P score-based prediction model. Results and conclusion:We found that the predictive power of P-score was not only comparable to the traditional cancer marker, in comparison with individual CTC/CTM, more false positives could be corrected by using P-score, thereby to improve the accuracy of analysis. From our preliminary validation tests, the prognosis and disease progression monitored longitudinally by P-score were further confirmed by clinical outcome data from physicians and its sensitivity was even better than those from individual biomarkers. Emotional responses to sensory experience are central to the human condition in health and disease. We hypothesized that principles governing the emergence of emotion from sensation might be discoverable through their conservation across the mammalian lineage. We therefore designed a cross-species neural activity screen, applicable to humans and mice, combining precise affective behavioral measurements, clinical medication administration, and brain-wide intracranial electrophysiology. This screen revealed conserved biphasic dynamics in which emotionally salient sensory signals are swiftly broadcast throughout the brain and followed by a characteristic persistent activity pattern. Medication-based interventions that selectively blocked persistent dynamics while preserving fast broadcast selectively inhibited emotional responses in humans and mice. Mammalian emotion appears to emerge as a specifically distributed neural context, driven by persistent dynamics and shaped by a global intrinsic timescale.
