Decontamination of mobile phones and electronic devices for health care professionals using a chlorhexidine/carbomer 940■gel

Though they reduce microorganism growth, current hospital disinfectants also damage many of today’s modern electronic devices such as tablets and smartphones. Herein, the efficacy of a new chlorhexidine digluconate gel (CDG) was tested as a disinfectant for mobile and electronic devices in a clinical environment. Specifically, Escherichia coli, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Pseudomonas aeruginosa and methicillin resistant Staphylococcus aureus were used to infect the screen of eight smartphones. The CDG was prepared at concentrations of 2%, 4% and 6%, and tested on paper disks infected with these bacteria before being tested on the smartphones. The devices were disinfected with the CDG gel (4%) at two times: immediately and after 5 min of the bacterial contamination. In all cases, the CDG gel eliminated 100% of gram-positive and gram-negative microorganisms compared to the control (without any agent). In addition, the gel did not damage the smartphones. Therefore, our study suggests that the CDG gel may be applied to disinfect a wide range of electronic devices for health care professionals in the hospital environment.

Brazil is currently the sixth world largest lubricating oil consumer,as a result,the sixth largest used lubricating oil (ULO) producer,with an annual ULO production of about one million ***,due to the environmental consequences and also to the large amount of this waste,it becomes necessary to quantify and qualify the impacts resulting from ULO management *** study evaluates,through the life cycle assessment (LCA) methodology,the current ULO management system in southern *** comparisons regarding the environmental performance scenarios were defined with the use of eight impact categories: land use,nonrenewable energy,global warming potential,aquatic acidification potential,aquatic eutrophication potential,human toxicity potential,terrestrial ecotoxicity potential and carcinogens *** LCA was conducted based on Simapro,using the "IMPACT 2002+ for ULO v2.12/IMPACT 2002+" *** scenarios comprised the two ULO management models currently used in *** first,which is designated in the study,by TTrR scenario and the second,regarded as TsTR *** LCA results showed that the re-refine phase,in the TsTR scenario,presents lower impact when compared to the corresponding TTR scenario *** TsTR scenario presented the greatest impacts in seven categories (carcinogens,terrestrial ecotoxicity,land use,eutrophication,global warming,use of nonrenewable energy and acidification),corresponding to about 87.5％ of all the *** the contrary,the TTR scenario presented lower impacts in these seven categories,impacting more on only one category (human toxicity).In relation to transportation,the opposite occurs,transport in the TTR scenario presents a larger contribution,impacting 100％ more than transport in the TsTR *** presence of the transshipment center decreases the amount of re-refining impacts in 87.5％ of the categories in the TTR *** in the TTR scenario contributes relatively more to the fact that

Evaluation of service-life prediction model for reinforced concrete structures in chloride-laden environments

Reinforced concrete structures are subjected to several degradation processes that often occur early, especially due to reinforcements corrosion. Therefore, the use of representative models for an accurate service-life prediction of reinforced concrete structures becomes indispensable. Thus, this study is aimed at evaluating the model proposed by Andrade to efficiently predict the chloride penetration in concrete structures. In addition, the input variables of this model, as well as the challenges in obtaining them are analyzed. Andrade’s model was applied in some case studies to verify their efficiency in predicting the chloride penetration in reinforced concrete structures in marine environments. The results indicate that for data with small exposure times, the model yielded similar responses to the chloride penetration in situ, with good results within an error range of 35%, associated with a maximum difference of only 4.6 mm between observed and calculated values. For the data with higher exposure times, the differences were significant, indicating the need for an alteration in order to best determine the increase in surface chloride concentration over time. Thus, it is suggested that the model undergoes modifications, mainly in relation to two fundamental aspects, (i) adopt the growth of the chloride surface concentration over time and (ii) consider the variability of the concrete characteristics and exposure conditions through a probabilistic approach. © 2019, Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

The development of numerical simulations for metal additive manufacturing (AM) processes to predict distortion and residual stress is considered a strategic tool for supporting the industrialization of AM. However, the complexity of these analyses, due to the intricacies of thermal cycles, demands substantial computational resources and a deep understanding of the key process variables to achieve accurate models. This study aims to evaluate the influence of thermal parameters on the results of thermomechanical simulations using the Inherent Strain Method (ISM). Specifically, the analysis investigates the effects of estimated peak temperatures on thermal analyses, distortion, equivalent stress, and microstructure volume fraction in maraging 300 steel (MS300) parts simulated via finite elements. The results indicate that varying the peak temperature of the models causes a linear change in the thermal simulation output, referred to as the exposed energy fraction (EEF) in the Simufact Additive software, which determines the thermal history of the process in fabricated geometry. However, the distortion behavior—by the mechanical analyses that used the EEF as input—deviated from this linearity across specific regions, emphasizing the need for localized accuracy assessment within complex geometries. Equivalent stress decreased with lower peak temperatures, highlighting a correlation between these factors, while the microstructure volume fraction remained unchanged across different peak temperatures. The simulation results were validated by comparing the simulated measurements with experimental data of the same geometry manufactured via laser powder bed fusion (LPBF). Displacement in the simulation was assessed by comparing the diameters of the front and back faces, as well as through surface deviation analysis, which highlighted variations between the scanned experimental geometry and the simulated part. Plastic pollution is a widespread issue that poses a threat to agroecosystems. Recent data on microplastic (MP) pollution from compost and its application to soil have highlighted the potential impact of micropollutants that may be transferred from compost. Thus, we aim with this review to elucidate the distribution-occurrence, characterization, fate/transport, and potential risk of MPs from organic compost to gain comprehensive knowledge and mitigate the adverse impacts of compost application. The concentration of MPs in compost was up to thousands of items/kg. Among micropollutants, fibers, fragments, and films are the most common, with small MPs having a higher potential to absorb other pollutants and cause harm to organisms. Various synthetic polymers, including polyethylene (PE), polypropylene (PP), polyethylene terephthalate (PET), polystyrene (PS), polyvinyl chloride (PVC), polyester (PES), and acrylic polymers (AP), have been widely used of plastic items. MPs are emerging pollutants that can have diverse effects on soil ecosystems, as they can transfer potential pollutants from MPs to compost and then to the soil. Following the microbial degradation scheme, the transfer chain from plastics to compost to soil can be broken down into main stages, i.e., colonization - (bio)fragmentation - assimilation - and mineralization. Microorganisms and adding biochar play an essential role during composting, which can be an effective solution to enhance MP degradation. Findings have shown that stimulating free radical generation could promote the biodegradation efficacy of MPs and possibly remove their occurrence in compost, thereby reducing their contribution to ecosystem pollution. Furthermore, future recommendations were discussed to reduce ecosystem risks and health challenges.

This paper presents a conceptual framework methodology concerning service life prediction of concrete structures by using deterministic or probabilistic processes, which are included from collecting data until the decision-making. This methodology provides guidelines to generate new degradation models and accomplish new service life studies of either existing structures or new ones in literature. In the first case, it is possible to estimate how many years are necessary for the structure to reach the desired limit state (durability, service or of security). It can also provide support in project design by selecting durability requirements such as covering thickness, concrete strength, type of cement, water–cement ratio, among other factors that influence the service life of concrete structures. © 2018, Springer International Publishing AG, part of Springer Nature.
