A comparative analysis between clustered and non-clustered companies using innovation indicators

The Innovation has become a central and pivotal element in the development of organizations. The aim of this paper was to analyze and compare the Innovation Indexes using indicators in two Brazilian regions, in order to identify if independent international companies have higher innovation indexes than those that belonging to an industrial cluster. Methodologically, it was used a research tool to identify the Innovation Index of these companies (questionnaires with open and closed questions), applied to the company's senior managers. The results showed that there is a link between the innovation index and companies within an industrial cluster. Thus, it was possible to observe that the reunion in clusters favors the development of innovation, observing that the general indexes obtained were bigger than those of the independent international companies were. Furthermore, the study made possible to obtain a clear view on the importance of different aspects of innovation and their influence on the Innovation Index obtained on both scenarios. © 2015, IFAC (International Federation of Automatic Control) Hosting by Elsevier Ltd. Performance Management in Horizontal Business Networks: A systematic review

The objective of this study was to identify the perspectives and factors affecting management performance of companies in horizontal networks. The instrument used for the selection of articles was Proknow C-structured. As a result, 20 articles relevant to the research topic were found in the 13 selected articles from the databases. After, the systematic analysis of the articles, it was identified eight perspectives: economic/social, financial, customer, environment, social capital, process, growth/learning and collaboration beyond 25 factors. Such factors and perspectives will serve as an aid for managers to evaluate the management of a horizontal network and serve as a starting point for future studies. © 2015, IFAC (International Federation of Automatic Control) Hosting by Elsevier Ltd. Assessing the Efficiency of Sports in Using Financial Resources with DEA Models

This paper presents and compares two different DEA models used to evaluate the efficiency of Brazilian Olympic Confederations in using the financial funds (from the Agnelo/Piva Law in 2011) e transform them into results, that is, medals. We use two different models, in both models the funds coming from the Agnelo/Piva Law distributed in 2011 is considered as an input, in order to evaluate how efficiently these funds were being converted into results by each one. The main difference between these two models is how each one of them used the data related to the number of gold medals offered by each sport in 2011 Guadalajara Pan American Games and also the data related to the number of gold, silver and bronze medals won by each sport during this same competition. The number of gold medals offered represent a proxy for difficulty measure in winning a medal. The first model considered these data as a second input and the number of gold, silver and bronze medals won by each sport were considered as outputs. The second model used only the funds received by each Confederation as an input and it used three outputs, which were formed by a ratio of the first model's output to the number of gold medals offered by each sport. After comparing these models, the results obtained by each one of them are presented and discussed in order to determine the best approach to perform an efficiency evaluation of Olympic sports.

Modeling to Relate Variables in the Context of Franchises in Brazil

The central objective of the research is to propose a model for the comparative study of the degree of relationship between the variables considered as most relevant in the context of franchises in Brazil. In terms of methodology, the research undertook a qualitative survey of the variables, which in a second phase provided a quantitative framework in order to fulfill the proposed objective, through concepts based on multicriteria methods, performance measurement systems, and linear correlation. Resulting from the practical implementation proposed for the General Food category, it was found that only two constants, denoted “Average Initial Investment” and “Financial Obligations,” are directly related to the base variable defined by “Gross Revenues.” © 2015, Taylor & Francis Group, LLC.

The ordinal methods are widely used to establish rankings in sports competitions because sporting results are on an ordinal scale. However, these methods assume that the decision maker is highly rational and provide a full ranking. This paper analyses the case in which the decision maker is weakly rational. In this case, the decision maker respects the transitivity of preferences but not indifference. It also shows how to adapt the Condorcet method to deal with this situation, using the results of the 2013 Formula 1 Constructors’ World Championship.

Assessment of the Total Organic Carbon and Conductivity in Consecutive Dyeings with Reactive Dyestuffs Using Treated Effluent by UV/H202 Photocatalysis

The paper was monitored the conductivity （g.L＂l of NaCI）, the absorbances values （Abs） and the amount of TOC （total organic carbon）, before and after five consecutive dyeings made with reuse water, obtained from treated effluent by UV/H202 photocatalysis. All rates of decolorization were above 92%, the removal of total organic carbon was above 89% in all treatments and the economy of NaCI was from 3.10 in the first recipe, 3.17 in the second, 3.49 in the third, 3.79 in the fourth and 4.05 in the fifth recipe. The five dyeings compared with same dyeings made with deionized water presented a color deviation （AE＊） below 1. The conventional dyeings would consume 80 L/kg against 40 L/kg used in the dyeing process proposed in this study, representing a great economy of water, with no discharge of effluents.

The great urban population growth generates several changes in life style, land use, energy demand and consequent environmental pressure. In this way, studies related to environmental sustainability of urban systems and the availability of natural resources are of major importance. EMergy is considered to be a powerful tool to environmental accounting and measures both natural and human resources to generate products and services. The evaluation through eMergy synthesis of cities, states, nations and its base resources provides large scale perspective to evaluation of environmental areas and can help selection of policies for public benefit. This preliminary study applies the eMergy synthesis to evaluate the sustainability of the cities that compose the ABC Paulista, accounting the local free renewable and the purchased resources that give support to the cities.

The aim of this paper was to study three variables in hydrogen peroxide bleaching of cotton fabrics： the amount of hydrogen peroxide （H2O2）, peroxide stabilizer （Na2SiO3） and the process temperature. The factorial planning of two levels and three factors was done in order to obtain an optimized recipe for subsequent comparison with commons recipes used in industry. Were evaluated the brightness （DL）, energy consumption （dQ）, H2O2 residual （Rox）, processing time and ecological costs.

The literature identifies a trend of new vehicles development at global level resulting in a global product development (GPD). In this context, this paper aims at analyzing the decentralization of GPD in an assembler of commercial vehicles. Factors that contribute to the decentralization of GPD are considered in this investigation as well as their causes. Case-based research is adopted as the research methodological approach, conducted in a Brazilian assembler and its headquarters in Germany. The results indicate that the organization reacts similarly to other economics industrial sectors (e.g. telecommunications) when facing the decision of decentralizing GPD. Unlike other studies, it was also found that modular design has influence on the GPD decentralization process. The interest of the local market and historical aspects of the evolution of the subsidiary were found to be relevant. From these results a proposed structure for GPD and adoption of modular design is suggested. © 2012 IEEE.

Objective Antimicrobials are used interchangeably in medical practice, contributing to the emergence of resistant microbial strains. Methods This study describes the antimicrobial audit performed by forecasting analysis of medical records of 846 patients at the Hospital Santa Cruz, Santa Cruz do Sul - Rio Grande do Sul - Brazil. Results Of the patients studied, 134 (15.8%) received antimicrobials. The audit was conducted interactively, with intervention and discussion with the prescriber. Considering the presumptive diagnosis and prescribed drug, it was verified that 74.6% of patients on antimicrobials received what was considered the first choice treatment. Inadequate antimicrobial agent for clinical diagnosis (5.2%) and lack of adjustment for renal function (43.7%) were the most frequent errors. Conclusion A strategic plan aimed at the rational use of antimicrobials based on educational and interventionist practices can help the infection control professional to adjust the routines to improve healthcare quality.
