Introduction: Despite being a widely used screening questionnaire, there is no consensus on the most appropriate measurement model for the Alcohol Use Disorders Identification Test (AUDIT). Furthermore, there have been limited studies on its measurement invariance across cross-cultural subgroups, genders, and sexual orientations. Aims: The present study aimed to examine the fit of different measurement models for the AUDIT and its measurement invariance across a wide range of subgroups by country, language, gender, and sexual orientation. Methods: Responses concerning past-year alcohol use from the participants of the cross-sectional International Sex Survey were considered (N = 62,943;M_age: 32.73;SD = 12.59). Confirmatory factor analysis, as well as measurement invariance tests were performed for 21 countries, 14 languages, three genders, and four sexual-orientation subgroups that met the minimum sample size requirement for inclusion in these analyses. Results: A two-factor model with factors describing ‘alcohol use’ (items 1–3) and ‘alcohol problems’ (items 4–10) showed the best model fit across countries, languages, genders, and sexual orientations. For the former two, scalar and latent mean levels of invariance were reached considering different criteria. For gender and sexual orientation, a latent mean level of invariance was reached. Conclusions: In line with the two-factor model, the calculation of separate alcohol-use and alcohol-problem scores is recommended when using the AUDIT. The high levels of measurement invariance achieved for the AUDIT support its use in cross-cultural research, capable also of meaningful comparisons among genders and sexual orientations. © 2023

In this paper we proposed an approach based on genetic algorithm (GA) and digital image processing (DIP) to deal with the problem of cutting identical items (pieces) with irregular shapes in metal plates (objects). The goal is to maximize the number of items to be cut in the available area of the object. In this approach both object and the items are depicted as color images. The GA is responsible for generating the solutions, each one represented by a vector containing a set of translations and angles that indicate the positions and orientations for cutting the pieces. The evaluation of each solution generated by GA is performed by an image analysis algorithm that basically detects overlapping among the items placed on the object. Preliminary experiments indicate that the use of GA combined with DIP is a good alternative for solving the investigated problem. © 2015 ACM.

A Knowledge-intensive process (KIP) is characterized as a bag of activities based on knowledge intensive acquisition and manipulation. A KIP differentiates from traditional business processes mainly because of the dynamism or the variability of event flows among the process instances. Thus, traditional business process modeling notations do not adequately represent the broad spectrum of flows that occur in each KIP instance, making them even more challenging to be understood or managed. Some approaches to represent a KIP were defined in the literature, but representing the KIP variability in a cognitively efficient way is still an open issue. This paper presents the graphical notation KIPN-C, which proposes diagrams to represent variability of a KIP relating it to the context of its instances.

This paper conducts a Systematic Mapping in order to outline a current overview of digital serious games applications' evaluations for game-based learning purposes on computer science higher education. The search was performed on informatics' area electronic databases, resulting in 2,174 publications initially found. After sorting through the application of inclusion and exclusion criteria, remained 59. In the final phase, after thorough reading the extracted publications, has come up to 10 papers. The results reveal different practical approaches of digital serious games' applications evaluations that assess its different aspects' influence on students.

[Context] The inclusion of programming concepts in high school education has been emerging, since applying computing in high school education is a way to motivate and prepare students into the field of technology. [Objective] This work evaluates the teaching programming games for high school students based on different forms of distance education (online video lessons, broadcasted live or recorded, and tutorials in PDF). [Method] A case study was performed in the second half of 2014 with 30 high school students enrolled in an online game programming challenge. The students had access to the different formats of online lessons and they were monitored by tutors in a online learning environment. [Results] Over 75% of the students performed and sent all the activities requested in the study, suggesting that all investigated online formats are effective. However, 85% of students indicated their preference to use recorded video classes to learn programming. Finally, 100% of the students said that they would participate again in such challenge, showing the attractiveness of the game development. [Conclusions] We considered that online formats (specially recorded video) can be used to promote the development of games to introduce programming knowledge in high school education. However, the lessons learned (difficults found and improvement suggestions) should be taken in consideration to implement online solutions in large scale.

Proteins are macromolecules that have a high molecular weight, and make up, along with water, most of the composition of cells. The functions they perform are extremely important, such as the catalysis of biochemical reactions, cytoskeleton formation, and the transportation and storage of substances. With the completion of genome sequencing, protein discovery has been growing exponentially, and the laboratory methods for determining their functions have not been able to keep up with this growth. Due to this fact, it is necessary to develop methods to aid in this function discovery process. Thus, this work proposes a physical-chemical feature selection methodology calculated by means of the structures that compose the proteins. This stage has the goal of choosing a feature subset from all available features. A feature is considered relevant if it can be used by the machine to create a separation capability between the different protein classes. To select this subset, we proposed the use of a simple genetic algorithm. The results obtained with the proposed methodology were superior to those found in the literature, reaching a precision of 71% and a sensitivity of 68%.

It is inherent that every activity (human or nonhuman) has an associated risk level to the actors involved. This risk level may vary from no-damage risk to a very high risk level. Based on the regular actor's behavior, the risk level of an activity can be changed to a higher or lower level (i.e., how apt the actor is related to an activity). This paper proposes a novel approach to analyze the risk level of activities considering the behavior of the actors using the Skill, Rule and Knowledge (SRK) cognitive architecture proposed by Rasmussen in 1983. Taking advantage of the Internet of Things paradigm we developed a context-aware middleware that analyzes the actors' behavior based on the SRK model to infer the risk level associated with their activities.

The SOA architecture primarily based on Web services is experiencing a steady adoption, although its growth was lower than expected when it was launched, mainly because of security related concerns. Web services inherited many well-known security problems of Web applications and brought new ones. Major data breaches today are consequences of bad input validation at the application level. This paper presents a way to implement an input validation model for Web services which can be used to prevent cross-site scripting and SQL injection through the use of predefined models which specify valid inputs. The proposed WSIVM (Web Services Input Validation Model) consists of an XML schema, an XML specification, and a module for performing input validation according to the schema. A case study showing the effectiveness and performance of this mechanism is also presented.
