A PID Metaresolver to enable accurate citation and attribution of digital objects by providing reliable access to metadata and associated resources

Persistent Identifiers (PIDs) are elementary ingredients in nowadays and future research data management processes. Looking at various data life cycles, identifiers help to achieve certain goals in a very efficient way, supporting steps to find, relate, integrate and publish data. Various identifier systems have been developed for this purpose, which are provided by various providers. This created the challenge of the complex and different methods of using the identifiers. Depending on the system, an identifier can, for example, point to a landing page or directly to a digital object. The PID Metaresolver unifies the use of PIDs from different providers and thus supports and simplifies the use of the referenced object. It is a service for resolving PIDs from various providers, validating the PID provider for a given PID and integrating additional providers. With the PID Metaresolver, workflows and analyses of research data can be extended to a larger list of providers. We present the design and implementation of the PID Metaresolver service and give an insight into the many possible uses.

The use of distant health monitoring solutions is consciously increasing nowadays exploiting the advancements in modern technologies such as the Internet of Things (IoT), mobile networking and pervasive communication. Already in cases of chronic disease management the regular use of mHealth and telemonitoring approaches is very common facilitating the constant patient monitoring and enabling the use of innovative features for patients, medical experts and caregivers. Remote communication is essential as it allows the prevention or/and the precise treatment of patients. The power efficiency, the computing capabilities and the affordability of modern biosignals sensors, portable computing machines and IoT devices allows for the development of advanced and compelling solutions in the area of mHealth and patient telemonitoring. This work presents a low-cost, IoT enabled, home monitoring solution, as part of a dedicated communication and social networking platform, which provides wireless and automated collection and storage of biosignals received from sensors. The proposed solution provides also remote communication and monitoring via a dedicated social network, which enables real-time videoconferencing and data exchange.

Aims. Over its lifetime and despite not being a survey telescope, the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) has obtained multi-epoch observations by multiple, diverse observing programs, providing the opportunity for a comprehensive variability search aiming to uncover new variables. We have therefore undertaken the task of creating a catalog of variable sources based on archival HST photometry. In particular, we have used version 3 of the Hubble Source Catalog (HSC), which relies on publicly available images obtained with the WFPC2, ACS, and WFC3 instruments on board the HST. Methods. We adopted magnitude-dependent thresholding in median absolute deviation (a robust measure of light curve scatter) combined with sophisticated preprocessing techniques and visual quality control to identify and validate variable sources observed by Hubble with the same instrument and filter combination five or more times. Results. The Hubble Catalog of Variables (HCV) includes 84,428 candidate variable sources (out of 3.7 million HSC sources that were searched for variability) with V ≤ 27 mag;for 11,115 of them the variability is detected in more than one filter. The data points in the light curves of the variables in the HCV catalog range from five to 120 points (typically having less than ten points);the time baseline ranges from under a day to over 15 years;while ∼8% of all variables have amplitudes in excess of 1 mag. Visual inspection performed on a subset of the candidate variables suggests that at least 80 % of the candidate variables that passed our automated quality control are true variable sources rather than spurious detections resulting from blending, residual cosmic rays, and calibration errors. Conclusions. The HCV is the first, homogeneous catalog of variable sources created from the highly diverse, archival HST data and currently is the deepest catalog of variables available. Smart grids are smart grids because they don't only transport electricity but also information that will become an active part of the electricity supply system. Smart grid evolution has, thus, a lot to gain through the exploitation of emerging Future Internet networking technologies for the efficient collection and management of the acquired information. The capabilities for interconnection of numerous intelligent networking devices, the advanced monitoring and control of dynamic networking infrastructures and the efficient handling of large volumes of data are research areas that have direct applicability into the smart grid design and operation. This article presents our insights for the design of a novel and open overlay networking architecture for leveraging end-to-end interconnection of physical or virtual objects, for achieving decentralized data management, and for providing distributed services in smart grid environments. The proposed architecture follows a layered-approach and extends or adapts a set of existing overlay and IP protocols. In addition, a smart grid business-oriented scenario is briefly presented in order to explain how future technologies may be used to fulfill contemporary society needs.

Current research Information Systems (CRISs) enable the maintenance of information related to research activities of organizations and their members, including outputs or products from these activities. Such contextual information is of uttermost importance for the processing of datasets and with the retrieval of scientific documents, providing e.g. the key information on provenance and characteristics of research activities that are needed when searching for data or scholarly content. In the context of the expanding initiative of the Web of Linked Data, translating that information into semantic languages enables new ways of querying benefitting from the reuse of domain ontologies. In that direction, this paper reports on the engineering of an ontology based version of the CERIF standard for CRISs using the OWL language and a proposed mapping to research datasets.

Aggregating metadata from various sources often raises practical issues, such as incompatibility between the different metadata application profiles (AP) used as well as quality aspects of the metadata used. In the case of repositories hosting agricultural-related content, the existence of various metadata AP with significant differences between them makes the effort of interconnecting these repositories a difficult task. This paper proposes a process for integrating different agricultural scientific content repositories and a workflow that should be followed in the context of populating the repository. Although the proposed solution refers to repositories with agricultural content, the same process can be followed in the case of repositories with different content. This process was proposed under the VOA3R project which is funded by the European Commission's ICT PSP Programme.

In an era where digitization and networking technologies offer a new way for environmental and natural history institutions, like natural history museums and science centers, to promote their services to the general public, new challenges rise on the field on intellectual property rights. Natural Europe project aim is to make natural history knowledge accessible on an open access basis to a wide spectrum of end-users. through Europeana portal. The value the project delivers is not merely in making works available online, but in the open access terms under which the works are available. Therefore understanding Intellectual Property considerations is fundamental in achieving this goal. The aim of this paper is to enable a further discussion on issues concerning the intellectual property rights for environmental and natural history collections.

This paper raises the issue of missing data sets for recommender systems in technology Enhanced Learning that can be used as benchmarks to compare different recommendation approaches. It discusses how suitable data sets could be created according to some initial suggestions, and investigates a number of steps that may be followed in order to develop reference data sets that will be adopted and reused within a scientific community. In addition, policies are discussed that are needed to enhance sharing of data sets by taking into account legal protection rights. Finally, an initial elaboration of a representation and exchange format for sharable TEL data sets is carried out. The paper concludes with future research needs.
