Resource Wealth, Defence Spending, and Environmental Outcomes in Nigeria: A Fourier ARDL Approach

Environmental degradation remains challenging for resource-rich nations, where the interplay between economic activities, institutional factors, and security measures influences ecological outcomes. Military spending, a necessary component of national security, has been theorized to mitigate or exacerbate environmental harm. However, empirical evidence for a resource-rich country heavily plagued by resource-related conflicts, such as Nigeria, remains limited. This study addresses this gap by examining the relationship between military spending and environmental degradation in Nigeria between 1990 and 2021. The study incorporates key economic and institutional variables such as growth, inflation, energy consumption, urbanization, trade openness, and institutional quality. Using the Fourier ARDL approach, the findings reveal that military spending raises Nigeria’s short- and long-term carbon footprint. A 1% increase in military expenditure results in a 0.046% rise in carbon footprint in the short run and a 0.062% rise in the long run, both statistically significant at the 1% level. These results confirm the treadmill of destruction theory, which links military activities to environmental damage. The study also uncovers evidence of Nigeria’s U-shaped environmental Brundtland curve and critical insights into the environmental impacts of military expenditure and guidance for balancing national security priorities with sustainable development goals.

An increase in the elderly population has led to a growing demand for constant health care. Remote monitoring of seniors aims to provide more effective care and promote patient independence, whether they live in residential homes, or their own homes supported by a domiciliary care service. It encompasses several issues present in their lives that may benefit from being assisted and monitored remotely. There are many successful studies and products focused on one of these issues, but there are no systems, to the best of our knowledge, that serve as a broad remote monitoring solution for multiple of these topics simultaneously. This paper proposes an architecture for an intelligent health monitoring ecosystem to interact with these various aspects of the elderly’s daily life, including monitoring of vital signs, movement and medication intake, detection of falls, sleep quality analysis, access control, and patient–caregiver communication. This solution will make use of wearables and medication dispensers, and it will securely store all patient-related information into an HL7 FHIR standardized database, from where machine learning models can import data for predicting important information and generating alerts when necessary. Next steps involve the development of this proposed system and testing it with elderly volunteers living in a residential home or subscribed to its domiciliary care services. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2025.

Quantum computing, leveraging the principles of quantum mechanics, has been found to significantly enhance computational capabilities in principle, in some cases beyond classical computing limits. This paper explores quantum computing's potential to address complex, large-scale problems in transportation systems. It focuses on three principal paradigms: Gate-based quantum computing, Quantum annealing, and Quantum machine learning, which, though based on gate-based quantum computing, is treated as distinct due to its unique methods and applications. With the integration of Internet of Things (IoT) technology, smart cities possess the capability to advance their public transportation modalities, address prevalent trafﬁc congestion challenges, reﬁne infrastructure, and optimize communication frameworks, thereby augmenting their progression towards heightened urbanization. Through the integration of sensors, cell phones, artiﬁcial intelligence (AI), data analytics, and cloud computing, smart cities worldwide are evolving to be more efﬁcient, productive, and responsive to their residents’ needs. While the promise of smart cities has been marked over the past decade, notable challenges, especially in the realm of security, threaten their optimal realization. This research provides a comprehensive survey on IoT in smart cities. It focuses on the IoT-based smart city components. Moreover, it provides explanation for integrating different technologies with IoT for smart cities such as AI, sensing technologies, and networking technologies. Additionally, this study provides several case studies for smart cities. In addition, this study investigates the challenges of adopting IoT in smart cities and provides prevention methods for each challenge. Moreover, this study provides future directions for the upcoming researchers. Geoeconomic fragmentation: What is at stake for energy transition in the Global North? Empirical evidence from panel-quantile-type estimation methods

This paper explores the impact of geoeconomic fragmentation on the energy transition in the Global North, a region historically responsible for high greenhouse gas emissions yet crucial in addressing climate change. Recent policy shifts away from economic integration have raised concerns about the risks of geoeconomic fragmentation in climate policy discussions. Using panel quantile methods, the study analyzes how trade restrictions and other factors influence renewable energy consumption across 23 Global North countries from 1990 to 2020. The results show a dual effect: at lower to middle levels of renewable energy consumption, geoeconomic fragmentation positively influences energy transition. However, at higher levels, its impact turns negative, emphasizing the importance of economic integration and reduced trade barriers. These findings suggest that policies should be tailored to specific national conditions to balance geoeconomic shifts with sustainable energy goals. Ultimately, this research highlights the complex relationship between economic fragmentation and energy transition. © 2025 The Authors

Climate Policy Uncertainty, Environmental Regulatory Arbitrage, and Internal Carbon Leakage in the European Union: Fourier ARDL and Causality Analyses

We argue that climate policy uncertainty can lead to a unique type of regulatory arbitrage whereby domestic firms respond to fluctuations between lax and stringent environmental regulations by relocating their production processes to jurisdictions with minimal environmental policies that could affect their profitability. The presence of uncertainty-driven environmental regulatory arbitrage may consequently contribute to the emergence of regions or countries that act as havens. This phenomenon could intensify internal carbon leakage, especially in economies with ambitious climate targets, as efforts to manage the risks associated with uncertain policies involuntarily result in increased carbon emissions elsewhere. Over time, this could lead to a rise in emissions displacement due to higher imports from abroad. To back up our claim with empirical evidence, we specifically study the internal carbon leakage in the EU15 countries resulting from the climate policy uncertainty. The analysis covers the period 1990–2022. A battery of econometric techniques is adopted—Fourier and conventional unit root tests, cointegration testing within the Fourier ARDL framework, short and long-run estimations within the Fourier ARDL framework, as well as Fourier Granger causality testing. By employing this battery of testing methodologies, we ensure robustness and thus the credibility of the study findings. Overall, after controlling for the effects of ecological innovation, environmental policy stringency, and the real GDP, we find that increases in climate policy uncertainty raise internal carbon leakage contemporaneously and that internal carbon leakage declines as climate policy uncertainty dies out over time in the long along with the short term. Furthermore, causality results reveal that climate policy uncertainty is a significant predictor of internal carbon leakage into the European Union. Model-based design is a very popular software development method for developing a wide variety of embedded applications such as automotive systems, aircraft systems, and medical systems. Model-based design tools like MATLAB/Simulink typically allow engineers to graphically build models consisting of connected blocks for the purpose of reducing development time. These tools also support automatic C code generation from models with a special tool such as Embedded Coder to map models onto various kinds of embedded CPUs. Since embedded systems require real-time processing, the use of multi-core CPUs poses more opportunities for accelerating program execution to satisfy the real-time constraints. While prior approaches exploit parallelism among blocks by inspecting MATLAB/Simulink models, this may lose an opportunity for fully exploiting parallelism of the whole program because models potentially have parallelism within a block. To unlock this limitation, this paper presents an automatic parallelization technique for auto-generated C code developed by MATLAB/Simulink with Embedded Coder. Specifically, this work (1) exploits multi-level parallelism including inter-block and intra-block parallelism by analyzing the auto-generated C code, and (2) performs static scheduling to reduce dynamic overheads as much as possible. Also, this paper proposes an automatic profiling framework for the auto-generated code for enhancing static scheduling, which leads to improving the performance of MATLAB/Simulink applications. Performance evaluation shows 4.21 times speedup with six processor cores on Intel Xeon X5670 and 3.38 times speedup with four processor cores on ARM Cortex-A15 compared with uniprocessor execution for a road tracking application. © Springer International Publishing Switzerland 2016.

Recent advancements in AI have spurred interest in ferroelectric memristors for neuromorphic chips due to their ability to precisely control resistive states through polarization flip-flop without electroforming. However, oxygen vacancies in these devices often cause high leakage current, low endurance, and dispersed switching voltages. Here, we introduce a silicon-based integrated (Ba_0.6Sr_0.4TiO₃)_0.5(Nd₂O₃)_0.5 (BSTN) nanoscaffolded ferroelectric thin film memristor with a vertically self-assembled nanocomposite structure (VSNs) optimally oriented on La_0.67Sr_0.33MnO₃/SrTiO₃/P[sbnd]Si substrates. This device demonstrates a widely tunable ferroelectric domain range (0°–180°), high remnant polarization (21.04 μC/cm²), and a greater number of unitary states (16 states or 4 bits). It exhibits high durability, enduring over 10⁹ switching cycles. The switching mechanism combines ferroelectric polarization and oxygen vacancy migration, enabling the simulation of biological synaptic functions via bi-directional conductance tunability. Additionally, we implemented a low-power (0.57 pJ per event) multi-factor secure encryption system for smart locks using 16×16 BSTN memristor crossbar arrays and a pressure sensor. Under multiple factors (disordered inputs, specific users, and corresponding passwords) the system recognized passwords with 97.6% accuracy and a 3.8% loss rate after 500 iterations. Overall, this work establishes a robust foundation for advancing multilevel storage, neuromorphic computing, and AI chip applications based on ferroelectric memristors. © 2025 The Authors

High sensitivity, high natural frequency, and high overload capability are desired for accelerometers used in industrial applications, but simultaneously enhancing all is challenging. Here, via designing novel heavily-doped fillet structures, we prove the sensitivity, resonant frequency, and overload capability can be simultaneously enhanced. The enhancements are attributed to regulations of stress concentration and effective sensing regions by the heavily-doped fillets. The sensors with and without fillets are designed, fabricated, packaged, and tested. The results show a sensitivity of 0.31±0.02 mV/g@5V, a natural frequency of 37.87±2.09 kHz, and an overload of 10040.17±531.76 g for sensors with 10-μm fillets, which are superior to 0.27±0.01 mV/g@5V, 34.13±0.90 kHz, and 7368.55±843.92 g for those no-fillet counterparts. Additionally, the developed sensor further exhibited feasibility in air-bearing vibration monitoring. The proposed design is envisioned to give insights into the novel designs of high-performance stress-based sensors, including accelerometers, pressure sensors, and strain gauges. © 2001-2012 IEEE.
