Data replication is one of the key components in data grid architecture as it enhances data access and reliability and minimises the cost of data transmission. In this paper, we address the problem of reducing the overheads of the replication mechanisms that drive the data management components of a data grid. We propose an approach that extends the resource broker with policies that factor in user quality of service as well as service costs when replicating and transferring data. A realistic model of the data grid was created to simulate and explore the performance of the proposed policy. The policy displayed an effective means of improving the performance of the grid network traffic and is indicated by the improvement of speed and cost of transfers by brokers. © 2006 IEEE.

Within collab.rative computing, computer mediated communications are evolving rapidly thanks to the development of new technologies. The facilitation of awareness and discovery of users in the communications networks is a key requirement for the success of these collab.rative systems. Besides the need for location awareness, the emergence of heterogeneous wireless environments, where users can freely roam, is making Location Management (LM) an increasingly important topic for network operators. In this paper, we use a general model for LM signaling costs to obtain analytical expressions for their optimization. These expressions are applicable to different LM algorithms and scenarios, contributing towards the development of a standardized performance evaluation technique and to deliver guidelines for the optimum design of Location Areas (LAs). We also illustrate how modifications in the different parameters involved in the LM costs affect the optimum number of cells per LA and the value of the optimum LM costs.

When multiple instances of an application running on multiple virtual machines, an interesting problem is how to utilize the fault handling result from one application instance to heal the same fault occurred on other sibling instances, and hence to ensure high service availab.lity in a cloud computing environment. This paper presents SHelp, a lightweight runtime system that can survive software failures in the framework of virtual machines. It applies weighted rescue points and error virtualization techniques to effectively make applications bypass the faulty path. A two-level storage hierarchy is adopted in the rescue point database for applications running on different virtual machines to share error handling information to reduce the redundancy and to more effectively and quickly recover from future faults caused by the same bugs. A Linux prototype is implemented and evaluated using four web server applications that contain various types of bugs. Our experimental results show that SHelp can make server applications to recover from these bugs in just a few seconds with modest performance overhead. © 2010 IEEE.

With the advent of cloud computing model, distributed caches have become the cornerstone for building scalab.e applications. Popular systems like Facebook [1] or Twitter use Memcached [5], a highly scalab.e distributed object cache, to speed up applications by avoiding database accesses. distributed object caches assign objects to cache instances based on a hashing function, and objects are not moved from a cache instance to another unless more instances are added to the cache and objects are redistributed. This may lead to situations where some cache instances are overloaded when some of the objects they store are frequently accessed, while other cache instances are less frequently used. In this paper we propose a multi-resource load balancing algorithm for distributed cache systems. The algorithm aims at balancing both CPU and Memory resources among cache instances by redistributing stored data. Considering the possible conflict of balancing multiple resources at the same time, we give CPU and Memory resources weighted priorities based on the runtime load distributions. A scarcer resource is given a higher weight than a less scarce resource when load balancing. The system imbalance degree is evaluated based on monitoring information, and the utility load of a node, a unit for resource consumption. Besides, since continuous rebalance of the system may affect the QoS of applications utilizing the cache system, our data selection policy ensures that each data migration minimizes the system imbalance degree and hence, the total reconfiguration cost can be minimized. An extensive simulation is conducted to compare our policy with other policies. Our policy shows a significant improvement in time efficiency and decrease in reconfiguration cost. Information and communication technology (ICT) consumes energy, but is also an important means of conserving energy. Conventionally, it has done so by optimizing the performance of energy-using systems and processes in industry and commerce. In the near future, ICT will also play a critical role in supporting the necessary paradigm shifts within the energy sector towards more sustainable electricity generation. However, with the advent of "smart" technology from the field of ubiquitous computing, further ways of reducing growing levels of domestic energy consumption are now emerging. With this in mind, we discuss how getting consumers "into the loop" can achieve energy savings on top of the efficiency gains resulting from automated systems, and we describe a prototype application aimed at inducing behavioral change by providing direct feedback on household electricity consumption. © 2010 ACM.

Recently, grid computing environment has being changed to the service-oriented grid integrated with Web Services for supporting more open, scalab.e and flexible grid architecture. In this architecture, a grid application is the service-oriented grid application in which grid Services are executed according to the workflow of the grid application. This implies that the grid scheduling method needs to consider grid service characteristics. Although many grid scheduling methods have been developed, we need new grid scheduling method to reflect the service-oriented grid concept and to ensure performance of the grid application. Therefore, we propose the grid service performance model based on factors such as service availab.lity, accessibility, reliability, throughput, and slowdown, and develop grid scheduling method to increase performance of the service-oriented grid application. © 2006 IEEE.

Android's permission system offers an all-or-nothing installation choice for users. To make it more flexible, users may choose a popular app tool, called permission manager, to selectively grant or revoke an app's permissions at runtime. A fundamental requirement for such permission manager is that the granted or revoked permissions should be enforced faithfully. However, we discover that none of existing permission managers meet this requirement due to permission leaks. To address this problem, we propose CICC, a finegrained, semantic-aware, and transparent approach for any permission managers to defend against the permission leaks. Compared to existing solutions, CICC is fine-grained because it detects the permission leaks using call-chain information at the component instance level, instead of at the app level or component level. The fine-grained feature enables it to generate a minimal impact on the usability of running apps. CICC is semantic-aware in a sense that it manages call-chains in the whole lifecycle of each component instance. CICC is transparent to users and app developers, and it requires minor modification to permission managers. Our evaluation shows that CICC incurs relatively low performance overhead and power consumption. Copyright 2015 ACM.

The ever-increasing amount of information flowing through Social Media forces the members of these networks to compete for attention and influence by relying on other people to spread their message. A large study of information propagation within Twitter reveals that the majority of users act as passive information consumers and do not forward the content to the network. Therefore, in order for individuals to become influential they must not only obtain attention and thus be popular, but also overcome user passivity. We propose an algorithm that determines the influence and passivity of users based on their information forwarding activity. An evaluation performed with a 2.5 million user dataset shows that our influence measure is a good predictor of URL clicks, outperforming several other measures that do not explicitly take user passivity into account. We demonstrate that high popularity does not necessarily imply high influence and vice-versa. © 2011 Authors.

Computer science is a practical discipline. It is always a great challenge to evaluate students' computer practice using computer-aided means for large scale students. We always need to address problems such as suspected plagiarism and deviation of the overall difficulty factor. In this paper, a multi-dimensional assessment model is designed for CS courses based on the detailed practice processing data in an E-learning system. The model comprehensively evaluates the students' learning process and results in three aspects of correctness, originality, and quality detection. Besides, the teacher can easily participate in the assessment according to their needs. The correctness is an essential requirement, and the originality is based on the clustering results of students' behaviors after clone detection to curb homework plagiarism. SonarQube is used to detect code quality and put forward higher requirements for codes. Manual participation intelligence has improved the flexibility and applicability of the model to a certain extent. We applied this model on the EduCoder online education platform and carried out a comprehensive analysis of 485 students in the Parallel Programming Principles and Practice Class of Huazhong University of Science and Technology. Experiment results confirm the distinction, rationality, and fairness of the model in assessing student performance. It not only gives students a credible, comprehensive score in large-scale online practical programming courses but also gives teachers and students corresponding suggestions based on the evaluation results. Furthermore, the model can be extended to other online education platforms. © 2020 ACM.

The widespread acceptance of multimedia application has stimulated the development of multimedia server and its file system to guarantee the real-time requirement of continuous media streams. We designed and prototyped a continuous media file system on top of clustered workstations, called Crown(Clustered resources on workstations' network). Its file system, CrovmFS, guarantees glitch-less streams to many clients at the same time.
