Peering of Content Delivery Networks (CDNs) allow providers to rapidly scale-out to meet both flash crowds and anticipated increases in demand. Recent trends foster the need for a utility model for content delivery services to provide transparency, high availability, reduced investment cost, and improved content delivery performance. Analysis of prior work reveals only a modest progress in evaluating the utility for peering CDNs. In this paper, we introduce a utility model and measure the content-serving ability of the peering CDNs system. Our model assists in providing a customer view of the system's health for different traffic types. Our model also captures the traffic activities in the system and helps to reveal the true propensities of participating CDNs to cooperate in peering. Through extensive simulations we unveil many interesting observations on how the utility of the peering CDNs system is varied for different system parameters and provide incentives for their exploitation in the system design.

A content delivery network (CDN) is expected to provide high performance content delivery, which requires scalable infrastructure to achieve global coverage. The provision of such infrastructure may form a substantial entry barrier for new CDN providers, as well as affecting commercial viability of the existing ones. Peering of CDNs can be a way to allow dynamic infrastructural cooperation between CDNs in a scalable manner, in order to mitigate the impact of flash crowds and to achieve better overall service times. In this paper, we present a quality of service (QoS)-driven model to evaluate the user perceived performance of CDN peering relationships. In this model, an overloaded CDN redirects a fraction of its incoming requests to peered CDNs and thereby can avoid the impact of flash crowds. The model-based approach also assists in making concrete QoS guarantee for a given CDN. Our approach endeavors to achieve scalability for a CDN in a user transparent manner.

Cloud resource providers in a market face dynamic and unpredictable consumer behavior. The way, how prices are set in a dynamic environment, can influence the demand behavior of price sensitive customers. A cloud resource provider has to decide on how to allocate his scarce resources in order to maximize his profit. The application of bid price control for evaluating incoming service requests is a common approach for capacity control in network revenue management. In this paper we introduce a customized version of the concept of self-adjusting bid prices and apply it to the area of cloud computing. Furthermore, we perform a simulation in order to test the efficiency of the proposed model.

Data replication is one of the key components in data grid architecture as it enhances data access and reliability and minimises the cost of data transmission. In this paper, we address the problem of reducing the overheads of the replication mechanisms that drive the data management components of a data grid. We propose an approach that extends the resource broker with policies that factor in user quality of service as well as service costs when replicating and transferring data. A realistic model of the data grid was created to simulate and explore the performance of the proposed policy. The policy displayed an effective means of improving the performance of the grid network traffic and is indicated by the improvement of speed and cost of transfers by brokers.

With the growth of Utility grids and various grid market infrastructures, the need for efficient and cost effective scheduling algorithms is also increasing rapidly, particularly in the area of meta-scheduling. In these environments,users not only may have conflicting requirements with other users, but also they have to manage the trade-off between time and cost such that their applications can be executed most economically in the minimum time. Thus, choosing of the best grid resources becomes a challenge in such a competitive market. This paper presents two novel heuristics for scheduling parallel applications on Utility grids that manage and optimize the trade-off between time and cost constraints. The performance of the heuristics is evaluated through extensive simulations of a real-world environment with real parallel workload models to demonstrate the practicality of our algorithms. We compare our scheduling algorithms against other common algorithms used by current meta-schedulers. The results shows that our algorithms outperform other algorithms by minimizing the time and cost of application execution on Utility grids. Copyright © 2009, Australian Computer Society, Inc.

Image filtering is the use of computer graphics algorithms to enhance the quality of digital images or to extract information about their content. However rendering very large size digital images on a single machine is a performance bottleneck. To address this we propose parallelising this application on a desktop grid environment. For parallelizing this application we use the Alchemi Desktop grid environment and the resulting framework is referred to as *** allows the parallel execution of linear digital filters algorithms on images. We observed acceptable speed up as a result of parallelising filtering operation through Imagegrid. We run the tests on different data sets by varying the dimension of the images and the complexity of the filters. Results demonstrate potential of grid computing for desktop applications and that the speed up obtained is more consistent for large images and complex filters.

distributed systems emulators built with the aid of virtualization tools allow testing of systems in a testbed whose number of real elements are orders of magnitude smaller than the number of virtual elements being tested. However, to allow testers to benefit from these systems, operation of the virtual environment should be hidden from them and performed automatically by the emulator. Moreover, testers may be unsure on the exact needs of their environment, and thus can request an environment that does not fit the experiment. In this paper we present our achievements in providing an emulation framework able to provide environment reconfiguration if the requested one does not comply with experiment's demands. Also, it supplies services such as execution log, environment monitoring, and automatic management of applications running in the virtual environment.

Simulation studies of grid scheduling strategies require representative workloads to produce dependable results. Real production grid workloads have shown diverse correlation structures and scaling behavior, which are different than the characteristics of the available supercomputer workloads and cannot be captured by Poisson or simple distribution-based models. We present models that are able to reproduce various correlation structures, including pseudo-periodicity and long range dependence. By conducting model-driven simulation, we quantitatively evaluate the performance impacts of workload correlations in grid scheduling. The results indicate that autocorrelations in workloads result in worse system performance, both at the local and the grid level. It is shown that realistic workload modeling is not only possible, but also necessary to enable dependable grid scheduling studies.

We propose and experiment a social networking service (SNS) for local communities for tsunami disaster control. It is an easy-to-use GIS-based system with powerful GIS analysis capabilities. One of the features of the system is resident participation. The GIS layer structure proposed in this paper nicely supports this user participation. A grid based e-Research platform is being developed for providing a simulation-based virtual reality environment for clinical management and therapy treatment. The development of this platform involves cross-disciplinary experts aiming at combining the state-of-the-art Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) analysis tools into clinical management system. These fluid dynamic studies support the physician and surgeon with recommendations for the possible range of treatment and operation techniques. The platform will consist of a cluster of computing nodes, a middleware (grid management layer), internet accessible tomography data and CFD analysis tools, and a tailored graphical user interface (GUI) application for various experts. In future, this platform will provide the novel creation of a prototype virtual reality model environment that links each technical modular consisting of a consolidation system with flexible interface model for exchanging data efficiently. Furthermore, besides allowing expeditious sharing of data and analytical tools, it will also furnish a foundation for cross-disciplinary collaboration and will definitely foster further advancement of related biomechanics researches. © 2007, Australian Computer Society, Inc.
