Typical remote sensing image interpretation consists of large number of long-lived independent computation jobs such as calibration, correction, and transformation and computation. These time consuming jobs are suitable for execution in desktop grid with high performance commodity PCs for its lower cost and high management ability. In this paper, a framework of parallel remote sensing image interpretation in desktop grid is proposed. The framework consists of modules such as job partitioning and scheduling, load balancing, communication, and image processing. We also provided an implementation based on java multi threaded programming. The computation results on real application of soil moisture estimation workload show that the average speedup is 6.1 in a 9-node heterogeneous desktop grid environment and failure rate of jobs is less than 5.6%. © 2010 IEEE.

Due to various differences in hardware architectures of devices in ubiquitous computing systems, portability and platform-independency become the main challenge for graphics programming in system design. In this paper, we propose an adaptive user interface programming toolkit for system design in ubiquitous computing environment. The toolkit leverages an existing system software infrastructure, making the application programming straightforward and platform independent. This proposed toolkit can be divided into two parts: the first part consists of open source cross-platform graphics libraries which are encapsulated into the platform dependent part of backend library for interacting with specific system. While another one, called core library, is responsible for the functions of control logics, graphics drawing and backend management. To demonstrate the practical use of this toolkit and its portability, a case study is provided for demonstration. The test results on three different embedded systems show its good adaptability on multiplatforms. © 2010 IEEE.

Inverted index is the most popular index structure in search engine. Applying index compression can reduce storage space on inverted index, and improve the search performance. In this paper, we achieve comprehensive performance evaluation of three state-of-the-art index compression schemes on open source information retrieval system-Lucene. We focus on the compression and storage of document ID, frequency and position information of Lucene word-level inverted index. The main work includes: 1) the impact of if-then-else construction of decompression process on performance in Java environment;2) the algorithm's compression ratio on the different scale of data;3) the performance comparison of term and phrase search;4) whether interleaving index file has remarkable discrepancies in compression ratio and decompression speed. The experiment result and analysis is given in detail. © 2010 IEEE.

With the development of the computer technology, the virtual machine has been become the main research topic. Understanding of the current technology and future trends of virtual machine system greatly help to improve the service performance of system. Therefore, we describe the current technology and present the future trends of virtual machine system in the paper. In the current technology of virtual machine system, we mainly describe the virtualization technology, the resource scheduling technology, the migration technology, the security technology and the performance evaluation technology. In the future trends of virtual machine system, we mainly present an overview of the future CPU architecture, the management mode of future memory and resource, the future maintaining method of system security and the performance evaluation method of future multiple virtual machine system. © 2010 IEEE.

With the growth of hardware and software resources, It becomes a challenge that how to ensure the Quality of service (QoS) of resource scheduling in multiple virtual machine system. In order to solve this problem, the authors propose a control mechanism about QoS for resource scheduling. In the control mechanism, we first propose a theoretical model. Then, we present an elicitation algorithm to resolve the optimal model. In order to justify the feasibility and availability of this control mechanism about QoS for resource scheduling in multiple virtual machine system, a series of experiments have been done. The results show that it is feasible to schedule the system resources and control the QoS of system resources for tasks in multiple virtual machine system. © 2010 IEEE.

With the growth of hardware and software resources, the management of virtual machine system is becoming more and more difficult. It has become a very difficult problem that how to schedule the system resource in real time and improve the service performance of resource in a multiple virtual machine system. In order to solve this problem, the authors propose a real-time scheduling mechanism of resource for multiple virtual machine system. In the real-time scheduling mechanism of resource, the authors first describe the architecture of multiple virtual machine system. Then, the authors present a real-time scheduling strategy of resource. In order to justify the feasibility and the availability of this resource scheduling mechanism, a series of experiments have been done. The results show that it is feasible to schedule the system resources for tasks in multiple virtual machine system. © 2010 IEEE.

Virtualization technology improves the resource utilization, but also raises the probability of resource contention. Thus, it arises one problem, namely how about performance isolation among VMs. To answer the question, benchmarks are highly required to evaluate performance isolation. However, few benchmarks to give solutions to the problem are available. Especially, there does not exist a micro-benchmark to measure how the performance of individual primitive operations varies with the type of misbehavior. In the paper, we present VITS - a micro-benchmark to evaluate the performance isolation of virtualization system. VITS Test Suite can test both software and hardware performance isolation. It is mainly consisted of six interference programs, which respectively test the performance isolation of cache, memory bandwidth, memory space, CPU, network and disk. VITS Test Suite provides results for user to analyze the performance isolation problem of the virtualization system along with the underlying hardware. Besides, we test Xen using VITS test suit. The experimental results show that, the cache, memory and disk performance isolation still have some big weak points to improve, in other words, the current virtualization system Xen is still unfair in fine-grained resource share.

Transactional memory (TM) is a parallel programming concept. Existing consistency protocols in distributed transactional memory system consume too much bandwidth and bring high latency. In this paper, we propose our Transaction Memory Consistency Protocol (TMCP), and point the new features compared to the current protocols. After formulating our model and analyzing the performance, we found both too much and too little execution time will cause more conflicts, given that the execution time of transaction population follows Gamma distribution. We indicate that it is important to adjust the execution time to a reasonable value to improve performance.
