General anesthesia is used to induce a reversible loss of consciousness in a patient to ensure they are completely unaware and pain-free during a surgical procedure. This is achieved through the administration of a combination of drugs that depress the central nervous system and can include intravenous injections, inhaled gases, or a combination of both. During the anesthesia maintenance phase, the events in surgery are not continuous, but obey a profile similar to that endorsed by event-based control. The present study considers event-based control as a natural solution to the control challenge of general anesthesia. Two fractional order Proportional Integral (PI) controllers are tuned and implemented using a decentralized approach to control a part of general anesthesia based on hemodynamic variables. The results show that this approach can be successfully used to keep Cardiac Output and Mean Arterial Pressure stable, with a special focus on patient safety, through fast detection of surgical stimulus and robustness to inter/intra patient variability.

In this contribution the design of an indirect adaptive third order sliding mode controller based on a backstepping-like procedure is presented. A recursively defined homogeneous control Lyapunov function is combined with the adaptive backstepping method via tuning functions to compensate for unmatched parametric uncertainties. A matched bounded disturbance is eliminated by discontinuous control. It is shown that the states of the regarded system in parametric strict-feedback form converge asymptotically to the equilibrium while the parameter estimation error is bounded. Further, it is guaranteed that all control and adaptation signals are bounded. The proposed design is demonstrated in a simulation of a system with unmatched parametric uncertainty and matched disturbance.

Indistinguishability analysis and observer design for size-structured cell populations

The observability property of population balance equations with biomass measurements is addressed within the framework of indistinguishable trajectories. The population balance equation is described by a partial integro-differential equation which is coupled with an ordinary differential equation for the nutrient dynamics. For the semi-discretized model equations, the dynamics of indistinguishable trajectories are derived and evaluated for the special case of equal partitioning at cell division revealing that the observability property is guaranteed as long as the nutrient concentration is not depleted. Based on these results, an observer is designed and tested in simulation to estimate the cell population distribution using biomass measurements in a batch bioreactor for the case of a bi-structured population.

Lithology classification using well logs plays a key role in reservoir *** paper studies the problem of lithology identification based on the set-valued method(SV),which uses the SV model to establish the relation between logging data and lithologic types at a certain depth *** particular,the system model is built on the assumption that the noise between logging data and lithologic types is normally distributed,and then the system parameters are estimated by SV method based on the existing identification *** logging data of Shengli Oilfield in Jiyang Depression are used to verify the effectiveness of SV *** results indicate that the SV model classifies lithology more accurately than the Logistic Regression model(LR)and more stably than uninterpretable models on imbalanced ***,the Macro-F1 of the SV models(i.e.,SV(3),SV(5),and SV(7))are higher than 85%,where the sandstone samples account for only 22%.In addition,the SV(7)lithology identification system achieves the best stability,which is of great practical significance to reservoir exploration.

Continuous-time adaptive controllers for systems with a matched uncertainty often comprise an online parameter estimator and a corresponding parameterized controller to cancel the uncertainty. However, such methods are often impossible to implement directly, as they depend on an unobserved estimation error. We consider the equivalent discrete-time setting with a causal information structure, and propose a novel, online proximal point method-based adaptive controller, that under a sufficient excitation (SE) condition is asymptotically stable and achieves finite regret, scaling only with the time required to fulfill the SE. We show the same also for the widely-used recursive least squares with exponential forgetting controller under a stronger persistence of excitation condition.

The control problem for the multivariable and nonlinear dynamics of unmanned aerial vehicles and micro-satellites is solved with the use of a flatness-based control approach which is implemented in successive *** state-space model of(i)unmanned aerial vehicles and(ii)micro-satellites is separated into two subsystems,which are connected between them in cascading *** one of these subsystems can be viewed independently as a differentially flat system and control about it can be performed with inversion of its dynamics as in the case of input–output linearized flat *** state variables of the second subsystem become virtual control inputs for the first *** turn,exogenous control inputs are applied to the first *** whole control method is implemented in two successive loops and its global stability properties are also proven through Lyapunov stability *** validity of the control method is confirmed in two case studies:(a)control and trajectories tracking for the autonomous octocopter,(ii)control of the attitude dynamics of micro-satellites.

This study aims to compare the effectiveness of different Pharmacokinetic-Pharmacodynamic (PK-PD) models for administering Propofol and Remifentanil, two critical agents in anesthesia. Initially, different PK models were introduced: one for Propofol based on the Schnider model and another for Remifentanil using the Minto model. Alternatively, both drugs were modeled using the Eleveld models. The PK-PD models were integrated into a closed-loop control system using model predictive control (MPC) with disturbances to control the Bispectral index (BIS) and the Richmond Agitation Sedation Scale (RASS). The methodology involved simulating the anesthetic agents in the open-source patient simulator (2 inputs, 2 outputs) with 12 patient datasets in a controlled environment to simulate the patient response variability, allowing for a detailed analysis of the model's performance in maintaining optimal drug concentrations. The primary focus was on the system's ability to adapt to surgical disturbances, a key challenge in anesthesia management, and whether a different modeling of drugs can have an impact on their effects. The results indicated significant differences in the performance of the two models configurations. The Eleveld model for Propofol showed less usage of drugs to maintain the desired BIS value. Concluding that this comparative analysis offers a valuable reference for selecting appropriate modeling approaches in the development of advanced control strategies in anesthesia.

Industry requires simple, yet efficient tuning methods for controllers. One of these tuning methodologies is the popular Ziegler-Nichols approach that requires little information regarding the process and has some pre-definite tuning rules. Although intensive research has been done in non-integer order controllers and their advantages have been demonstrated, their complexity and tedious tuning kept them away from industrial acceptance. In this manuscript, an existing Ziegler-Nichols method for fractional order controllers is modified to yield optimal parameters. The tuning rules and the optimization algorithm are simple, yet they lead to efficient fractional orders controllers. Simulation results are included to validate the proposed method. © 2022 IEEE.

In this paper a novel discrete-time realization of the super-twisting controller is proposed. The closed-loop system is proven to be globally asymptotically stable in the absence of a disturbance by means of Lyapunov theory. Furthermore, the steady-state error in the disturbed case is computed analytically and shown to be independent of the parameters. The steady-state error only depends on the sampling time and the unknown disturbance. The proposed discrete-time controller is compared to previously published discrete-time super-twisting controllers by means of the controller structure. In extensive simulation studies the proposed controller is evaluated comparative to known controllers. The continuous-time super-twisting controller is capable of rejecting any unknown Lipschitz-continuous perturbation. Furthermore, the convergence time decreases, if any of the gains is increased. The simulations demonstrate that the systems closed in the loop with each of the known controllers lose one of these properties, introduce discretization-chattering effects, or do not yield the same accuracy level as with the proposed controller. The proposed controller, in contrast, is beneficial in terms of the above described properties of the continuous-time super-twisting controller. © 2023, CC BY.

In the present scenario of the ‘one-tapin-one-tapout’ operation mode in urban rail transportation, determining passenger travel trajectories is challenging, thereby decreasing the effective counting of passengers on trains. In order to address this issue, a method for calculating passenger capacity on trains was developed by analyzing passenger travel information extracted from AFC data and train timetables. First, this research estimated the components of journey time to infer and reconstruct the passenger's specific spatiotemporal travel trajectory. The passenger-train matching model was then used to assign passengers to specific trains and calculate the passenger load of different trains at each station. At last, it took Suzhou Metro Line 3 as an example and analyzed the spatiotemporal distribution of urban rail transit passenger flow on a single line based on the proposed passenger-train model. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd. 2025.
