This paper proposes a linear matrix inequality based method to the estimation of a robust domain of attraction for a class of discrete-time nonlinear systems subject to uncertain constant parameters. Recursive algebraic representations of the system dynamics and of the Lyapunov stability conditions are applied to obtain convex conditions which guarantee the system robust local stability while providing an estimate of the domain of attraction. A large class of discrete-time nonlinear systems and of Lyapunov functions can be embedded in the proposed methodology including the whole class of regular rational functions of the system state variable and uncertain parameters. A numerical example illustrates the application of the proposed method. © 2010 IFAC.

The generation of high-energy laser pulses by so-called regenerative (optical) amplifiers is limited by the occurrence of period-doubling bifurcations induced by an inherently unstable pulse-to-pulse dynamics. Recently, the application of linear feedback methods to stabilize this pulse-to-pulse dynamics by modifying the supplied seed pulses was suggested as an alternative to the quite expensive current state of the art involving dedicated pre-amplifiers. To address some shortcomings inherent to the linear feedback, this paper investigates the design of nonlinear state feedback laws and in particular the possibility to stabilize the pulse-to-pulse dynamics globally subject to the given input constraints.

Leading space agencies and companies identified the utilization of local resources as foundation for the continuous long-term exploration of the solar system within the Global Exploration Roadmap. In-Situ Resource Utilization (ISRU) will be one of the key technologies for sustainable space exploration and habitation missions to Moon, Mars and beyond. Defined production systems based on hydrogen value chains are utilized as essential building blocks to transform the available resources into valuable elements for energy, propulsion, life support or production systems. The current research at TU Dresden addresses the engineering of ISRU systems using a modular plant concept of standardized, interchangeable and reusable modules. The development, production and automation processes are defined based on the existing standards on modular process plants (VDI 2776) and modular automation (VDI/VDE/NAMUR 2658) for terrestrial application. Therein, a module called Process Equipment Assembly (PEA) realizes unit operations which are interconnected to form different plant configurations that enable flexible production paths. These standardized architectures and concepts are adapted to the requirements of space utilization. Compared to currently developed highly specialized single use systems, a modular plant approach according to these standards allows the flexible application to different mission requirements and environmental conditions. In advance, modular plants minimize the development effort and risk, lead to a lowered market entry threshold for small and medium-sized enterprises from diverse market sectors and encourage commercial competition between manufacturers. This paper includes initial research work as a foundation for the future development process of modular ISRU process plants. Many tuning strategies for PID control algorithms have been proposed in the literature depending on modeling choice from heuristics, physical laws and/or experimental essays. In this paper, the properties of three model-free adaptive PID control design conceptions, known as direct PID control, are investigated and implemented. The recursive least squares estimator is used to identify the PID controller gains without the knowledge of the plant mathematical model. The tuning strategies of the direct PID controller are applied to the boiler control system proposed by Fernando Morilla (UNED, Spain) as a benchmark problem for the 2012 IFAC Conference on Advances in PID controllers.

A control method for small domestic power plants using renewable energy is described in this paper. This method is not only capable of optimizing the working point of the plant but also implements active power factor correction and lowers the extant harmonic distortion in the line. The novel element in the proposed complex controller structure is the upper harmonic controller that minimizes the amplitudes of the 3rd, 5th 7th, 9th, and the 11th upper harmonic component in the output voltage. The proposed controller has been investigated by simulation in Matlab environment, and as a result, substantial improvement of the output voltage and current waveform could be achieved. Robustness of the method against nonlinear loads has also been tested. 0 © 2010 IEEE.

This paper presents the modeling and control of a small scale submersible equipped with one propeller. The modeling process takes into consideration physical elements such as fluid statics, viscous damping and propulsive thrust. A first order transfer function with time delay is developed to make the connection between the voltage applied to the motor actuating the propeller and the velocity of the submersible. The velocity control is realized with a Fractional Order Proportional Integral (FOPI) controller that ensures zero steady state error. The controller is designed based on frequency domain specifications such as gain crossover frequency, phase margin and robustness to gain variations. The obtained fractional controller is validated through simulation in terms of steady state error and disturbance rejection performance. © 2018 The Society of Instrument and control Engineers - SICE.

In the operating rooms and the intensive care unit, it is crucial to manage the patient's hemodynamic status, which includes factors like cardiac output and mean arterial pressure. Anesthesiologists confront a difficult task while monitoring high-risk patients. Cardiac output optimization has been found to enhance the result of high-risk patients in terms of hospital stay, mortality rate, post-operative problems, etc. The application of standard control approaches is restricted because the mean arterial pressure response of a patient using vasoactive medicines is modeled by a first-order dynamical system with time-varying parameters and a time-varying delay in the control input. In order to circumvent implementation challenges, this work develops an approximation technique that describes the system using a higher-order model. Predictive control is therefore used to comprehend the practical application of higher-order hemodynamic systems. The effectiveness of this strategy is demonstrated by the simulations and outcomes that are given. © 2023 IEEE.

This paper shows how actuator coordination, based on control allocation, can be used in the motion control system for long articulated heavy vehicles. Usage of a control allocation structure is one way to handle an over-actuated system, which is a system where there are more motion actuators than controlled motions. The A-double combination is in focus for the control allocation design, which is based on vehicle modelling using the Lagrange formulation. The control structure is tested in a simulation environment and evaluated by two test scenarios. For the selected configuration with 31 actuators, the control allocation method coordinates the desired motion for both large and small steer and articulation angles. The proposed control structure is shown to be convenient when the vehicle configuration, for example the number of actuators in the combination, is changed. © 2014 IEEE.
