The energy gap in tin has been measured by observing the subharmonic gap structure in the current-voltage characteristics of a microbridge. The microbridge was irradiated with microwaves and the enhancement of the energy gap was compared to the predictions of the Eliashberg theory. At low power levels the agreement between theory and experiment is good but there is a large deviation at high power levels.

We have measured Auger electron emission from single crystal targets of Si(111) bombarded with H + and 4 He + beams in the 0.5 to 1.8 MeV range under channeled and random directions of incidence. Under channeling conditions (monitored by simultaneous measurement of the Rutherford backscattering yield), a significant reduction is observed in the intensity and also in the energy width of the KLL Auger line. These two characteristics of the Auger signal are influenced by channeled to random Auger signals correlates well with a simple model based on the shadow cone radius for the channeled ion, the lattice vibrational amplitude, the adiabatic K-shell excitation distance, and the electron inelastic mean free path, λ, for the 1620 eV Auger line. We derive a value for the latter quantity of 34 Å.

The results of scanning a finely collimated beam of 5.9 keV X-rays across the faces of three different Si(Li) X-ray detectors are interpreted in terms of an active area of good charge collection and peripheral regions of incomplete charge collection, both within the manufacturers' stated areas. The data are correlated with absolute efficiencies determined using calibrated radionuclide X-ray ernitters. The hazards of spectral artefacts from the imperfect regions in the contexts of XRF and PIXE are stressed.

The superconducting recombination time has been measured for tin close to Tc. Current was injected via a tunnel junction into one side of a tin microbridge. With the smallest injection current the recombination time was 1. 08 multiplied by 10-9 sec. As the injection current was increased the recombination time was found to increase.

The distribution of interstellar extinction and early-type stars to A5 in the field (l, b) = (253°, −7°) has been studied toV∼ 12 mag. The space density of B5, B8–A0 and A2–A5 stars is normal for a field outside the galactic plane, following a relationship of the formψ(r) =ψ0exp [− (rsinb)/β], where (ψ0,β) = (2.1 × 10−5stars pc−3, 60 pc), (17 × 10−5, 90) and (22 × 10−5, 140) for the three stellar groups respectively. The stellar and extinction data indicate that the direction (l, b) = (253°, −7°) lies out of the matter plane of the Milky Way at least to 3 kpc,|$(\langle E(B-V)\rangle = 9.25 \enspace\text{mag})$|. However, the higher extinction of Bochum 15 (4.4kpc,|$\langle E(B-V)\rangle = 0.5$|) and the absence of background galaxies suggests the possible presence of the galactic warp at −7° at distances beyond ∼ 5 kpc (z∼ 0.6 kpc), as well as a total higher extinction than the maximum ofE(B–V) = 0.53 ford> 10 kpc found at (l, b) = (245°, 0°).

The structure factor for liquid chlorine on the coexistence curve at room temperature (296 K) was measured out to a q of 11 Å −1 using neutrons of 88 meV. The inelasticity correction to the differential scattering cross section included terms due to the excitation of molecular vibrations which were important at large q . Comparisons were made to other published results for S ( q ) and some differences were noted, especially at low q and in the peak heights.

Raman and far-infrared spectra of polycrystalline samples of chloroform at 20 and 80 K are reported. Crystal field spilttings of the intramolecular fundamentals are observed as well as nine Raman and six infrared lattice modes. Spectra are interpreted in terms of a group theoretical analysis based on the molecular and crystal symmetries.

Taking into account the possibility of particle-antiparticle pair production, the authors have investigated the onset of Bose-Einstein condensation in an ideal relativistic Bose gas confined to an Einstein universe. Through an extensive use of the Poisson summation formula, they have carried out an explicit evaluation of the summations-over-states appearing in the problem, to derive rigorously the condensate fraction, rho0/ rho , and the specific heat at constant volume, crho, of the system as smooth functions of temperature-from T>or=Tcdown to T=0K. A detailed asymptotic analysis of the growth of the condensate and of the specific-heat maximum is then carried out and, in each case, finite-size corrections to the standard bulk results are obtained in explicit terms. Special cases of the non-relativistic and extreme relativistic versions of the model are examined at some length and, wherever possible, a comparison is made with the findings of the previous authors.

Raman and infrared spectra of polycrystalline cyanogen, C 2 N 2 , at 20 K are reported. Multiplet structure of the intramolecular fundamentals is observed and interpreted in terms of a group theoretical analysis based on the known orthorhombic crystal structure. Seven of the eight predicted librational and five of the predicted six translational modes are observed in the low-frequency regions of the Raman and infrared spectra, respectively.
