Advances in the understanding of martensitic transformations (diffusionless, solid‐solid phase transformations) have been instrumental to the recent discovery of new low hysteresis alloys. However, some key fundamental issues must be better understood to design still better alloys. Restricting attention to antiplane shear, we use finite element analysis to model the shape‐memory alloy microstructure within the Abeyaratne‐Knowles continuum thermomechanical framework and use an interface kinetic relation of the kind proposed by Rosakis and Tsai. Geometric singularities and topological changes associated with microstructural evolution pose significant numerical challenges. We address such challenges with a recently developed front‐tracking scheme called the face‐offsetting method (FOM) to explicitly model phase interfaces. Initial results demonstrate the effectiveness of FOM in resolving needle‐like twinned microstructures.

Network emulation has been widely used to aid in the development and evaluation of real time applications. Traditional emulation tools based on a single node machine or a cluster of machines cannot satisfy today's requirements for testing real time applications distributed over wide area networks. ROSENET is a novel network emulation system that exploits a remote high fidelity simulation to provide scale and accuracy for a low fidelity emulator serving a locally executing real time application. The distributed emulators and simulators in the ROSENET system coordinate by periodically updating their simulation/emulation status using network models. We evaluate the performance of an implementation of ROSENET using the NIST Net emulator and GTNetS simulator. Results show that ROSENET provides a promising approach to network emulation supporting accuracy and scale while meeting real-time constraints. We also illustrate the procedures using ROSENET to evaluate a contemporary real-time distributed application Skype and present experimental results.

We present a detailed treatment of the nonequilibrium Green’s function method for thermal transport due to atomic vibrations in nanostructures. Some of the key equations, such as self-energy and conductance with nonlinear effect, are derived. A self-consistent mean-field theory is proposed. computational procedures are discussed. The method is applied to a number of systems including one-dimensional chains, a benzene ring junction, and carbon nanotubes. Mean-field calculations of the Fermi-Pasta-Ulam model are compared with classical molecular dynamics simulations using a generalized Langevin heat bath. We find that nonlinearity suppresses thermal transport even at moderately high temperatures.
We consider a parallel method for solving generalized eigen-value problems that arise from molecular orbital computations. We use a moment-based method that finds several eigenvalues and their corresponding eigenvecto...

We present a new learning framework for synthesizing goal-directed actions from example movements. The approach is based on the memorization of training data and locally weighted regression to compute suitable movements for a large range of situations. The proposed method avoids making specific assumptions about an adequate representation of the task. Instead, we use a general representation based on fifth order splines. The data used for learning comes either from the observation of events in the Cartesian space or from the actual movement execution on the robot. Thus it informs us about the appropriate motion in the example situations. We show that by applying locally weighted regression to such data, we can generate actions having proper dynamics to solve the given task. To test the validity of the approach, we present simulation results under various conditions as well as experiments on a real robot.

This paper continues the authors' attempt to address the need for objective comparative evaluation of layout analysis methods in realistic circumstances. It describes the Page Segmentation Competition (modus operandi, dataset and evaluation criteria) held in the context of ICDAR2007 and presents the results of the evaluation of three candidate methods. The main objective of the competition was to compare the performance of such methods using scanned documents from commonly-occurring publications. The results indicate that although methods continue to mature, there is still a considerable need to develop robust methods that deal with everyday documents.
