Stochastic Klein–Gordon–Schrödinger (KGS) equations are important mathematical models and describe the interaction between scalar nucleons and neutral scalar mesons in the stochastic environment. In this paper, we propose novel structure-preserving schemes to numerically solve stochastic KGS equations with additive noise, which preserve averaged charge evolution law, averaged energy evolution law, symplecticity, and multi-symplecticity. By applying central difference, sine pseudo-spectral method, or finite element method in space and modifying finite difference in time, we present some charge and energy preserved fully-discrete scheme for the original system. In addition, combining the symplectic Runge-Kutta method in time and finite difference in space, we propose a class of multi-symplectic discretizations preserving the geometric structure of the stochastic KGS equation. On the Power of Gradual Network Alignment Using Dual-Perception Similarities

Network alignment (NA) is the task of finding the correspondence of nodes between two networks based on the network structure and node attributes. Our study is motivated by the fact that, since most of existing NA methods have attempted to discover all node pairs at once, they do not harness information enriched through interim discovery of node correspondences to more accurately find the next correspondences during the node matching. To tackle this challenge, we propose Grad-Align, a new NA method that gradually discovers node pairs by making full use of node pairs exhibiting strong consistency, which are easy to be discovered in the early stage of gradual matching. Specifically, Grad-Align first generates node embeddings of the two networks based on graph neural networks along with our layer-wise reconstruction loss, a loss built upon capturing the first-order and higher-order neighborhood structures. Then, nodes are gradually aligned by computing dual-perception similarity measures including the multi-layer embedding similarity as well as the Tversky similarity, an asymmetric set similarity using the Tversky index applicable to networks with different scales. Additionally, we incorporate an edge augmentation module into Grad-Align to reinforce the structural consistency. Through comprehensive experiments using real-world and synthetic datasets, we empirically demonstrate that Grad-Align consistently outperforms state-of-the-art NA methods. © 2022, CC BY.

A new piecewise quadratic approximation approach for L_0 norm minimization problem

In this paper, we consider the problem of finding sparse solutions for underdetermined systems of linear equations, which can be formulated as a class of L_0 norm minimization problem. By using the least absolute residual approximation, we propose a new piecewis, quadratic function to approximate the L_0 ***, we develop a piecewise quadratic approximation(PQA) model where the objective function is given by the summation of a smooth non-convex component and a non-smooth convex component. To solve the(PQA) model,we present an algorithm based on the idea of the iterative thresholding algorithm and derive the convergence and the convergence rate. Finally, we carry out a series of numerical experiments to demonstrate the performance of the proposed algorithm for(PQA). We also conduct a phase diagram analysis to further show the superiority of(PQA) over L_1 and L_(1/2) regularizations.

Multicellular self-assembly into functional structures is a dynamic process that is critical in the development and diseases, including embryo development, organ formation, tumor invasion, and others. Being able to infer collective cell migratory dynamics from their static configuration is valuable for both understanding and predicting these complex processes. However, the identification of structural features that can indicate multicellular motion has been difficult, and existing metrics largely rely on physical instincts. Here we show that using a graph neural network (GNN), the motion of multicellular collectives can be inferred from a static snapshot of cell positions, in both experimental and synthetic datasets. © 2024, CC BY-NC-ND.

The estimation of quantum entropies and distance measures, such as von Neumann entropy, Rényi entropy, Tsallis entropy, trace distance, and fidelity-induced distances such as the Bures distance, has been a key area of research in quantum information science. In our study, we introduce the disentangling quantum neural network (DEQNN), designed to efficiently estimate various physical quantities in quantum information. Estimation algorithms for these quantities are generally tied to the size of the Hilbert space of the quantum state to be estimated. Our proposed DEQNN offers a unified dimensionality reduction methodology that can significantly reduce the size of the Hilbert space while preserving the values of diverse physical quantities. We provide an in-depth discussion of the physical scenarios and limitations in which our algorithm is applicable, as well as the learnability of the proposed quantum neural network.

[This paper is part of the Focused Collection on Instructional labs: Improving traditions and new directions.] Measurement uncertainty is a critical feature of experimental research in the physical sciences, and the concepts and practices surrounding measurement uncertainty are important components of physics lab courses. However, there has not been a broadly applicable, research-based assessment tool that allows physics instructors to easily measure students’ knowledge of measurement uncertainty concepts and practices. To address this need, we employed evidence-centered design to create the Survey of Physics Reasoning on Uncertainty Concepts in Experiments (SPRUCE). SPRUCE is a pre-post assessment instrument intended for use in introductory (first and second year) physics lab courses to help instructors and researchers identify student strengths and challenges with measurement uncertainty. In this paper, we discuss the development of SPRUCE’s assessment items guided by evidence-centered design, focusing on how instructors’ and researchers’ assessment priorities were incorporated into the assessment items and how students’ reasoning from pilot testing informed decisions around item answer options. We also present an example of some of the feedback an instructor would receive after implementing SPRUCE in a pre-post fashion, along with a brief discussion of how that feedback could be interpreted and acted upon.

The lung is one of the prime respiratory organs in human physiology, and its abnormality will severely disrupt the respiratory system. Lung Nodule (LN) is one of the abnormalities, and early screening and treatment are necessary to reduce its harshness. The proposed work aims to implement the Convolutional-Neural-Network (CNN) segmentation methodology to extract the LN in various lung CT slices, such as axial, coronal, and sagittal planes. This work consists of the following phases; (i) Image collection and pre-processing, (ii) Ground-truth generation, (iii) CNN-supported segmentation, and (iv) Performance evaluation and validation. In this work, the merit of pre-trained CNN segmentation schemes is verified using (i) One-fold training and (ii) Two-fold training methods. The test images for this study are collected from The Cancer Imaging Archive (TCIA) database. The experimental investigation is executed using Python®, and the outcome of this study confirms that the VGG-SegNet helps to get better values of Jaccard (>88%), Dice (>93%), and Accuracy (>96%) compared to other CNN methods.

Software product quality models have evolved in their abilities to capture and describe the abstract notion of software quality since the 1970s. Many models constructed deal with a specific part of software quality only which makes them ineligible to assess the quality of software products as a whole. Former publications failed to thoroughly examine and list all the available models which attempt to describe each known property of software product quality. This paper discovers such complete software product quality models published since 2000;moreover, it endeavours to measure the relevance of each model quantitatively by introducing indicators with regard to the scientific and industrial community. The identified 23 software product quality model classes differ significantly in terms of publication intensity, publication range, quality score average, relevance score and the 12-month average of the Google Relative Search Index. The results offer a foundation for selecting the appropriate software product quality model for use or for extension if newly identified quality properties need to be connected to a general context. Furthermore, the experiences accumulated on the field of software product quality modelling motivated researchers to successfully transfer the concepts to other areas where abstract entities need to be compared or assessed including the quality of higher educational teaching and business processes, which is also briefly highlighted in the paper. © 2020, Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd.

The eye is the prime sensory organ in physiology, and the abnormality in the eye severely influences the vision system. Therefore, eye irregularity is commonly assessed using imaging schemes, and Fundus Retinal Image (FRI) supported eye screening is one of the ophthalmological practices. This work proposed a Deep-Learning Procedure (DLP) to recognize Diabetic Retinopathy (DR) in FI. The proposed work presents the experimental work with different DLP methods found in the literature. This work is executed with two modes; (i) DR detection using conventional deep-features and (ii) DR discovery using deep ensemble features. To demonstrate this work, 1800 fundus images (900 regular and 900 DR class) are considered for the assessment, and the advantage of proposed plan is confirmed using various performance metrics. The experimental outcome of this study confirms that the AlexNet-based detection provides a better detection (>96%), and the deep ensemble features of AlexNet, VGG16, and ResNet18 provide a detection accuracy of >98% on the chosen FRI database.
