The problem of item selling with the objective of maximizing the revenue is studied. Given a seller with k types of items and n single-minded buyers, i.e., each buyer is only interested in a particular bundle of items, to maximize the revenue, the seller must carefully assign some amount of bundles to each buyer with respect to the buyer’s accepted price. Each buyer bi is associated with a value function vi(·) such that vi(x) is the accepted unit bundle price bi is willing to pay for x bundles. We show that the single-minded item selling problem is NP-hard. Moreover, we give an O(√k)-approximation algorithm. For the online version, i.e., the buyers come one by one and the decision on each buyer must be made before the arrival of the next buyer, an O(√k · (log h + log k))- competitive algorithm is achieved, where h is the highest unit item price among all buyers. © Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2018.

In this paper we reformulate the thread scheduling problem on multiprogrammed SMPs. Scheduling algorithms usually attempt to maximize performance of memory intensive applications by optimally exploiting the cache hierarchy. We present experimental results indicating that - contrary to the common belief - the extent of performance loss of memory-intensive, multiprogrammed workloads is disproportionate to the deterioration of cache performance caused by interference between threads. In previous work [1] we found that memory bandwidth saturation is often the actual bottleneck that determines the performance of multiprogrammed workloads. Therefore, we present and evaluate two realistic scheduling policies which treat memory bandwidth as a first-class resource. Their design methodology is general enough and can be applied to introduce bus bandwidth-awareness to conventional scheduling policies. Experimental results substantiate the advantages of our approach. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2004.

In recent years, grid technology, which is frequently used to solve the scientific problem, has ripened gradually. A large number of storage resources and computational power are combined to form a data grid network to deal with massive data of scientific experiments. Data replication generates huge data which are distributed in wide-area for researches around the globe. The files of grid environments can be modified by grid users might bring a critical problem of maintaining data consistency among the several replicas distributed in different machines. For that reason how to maintain the consistency of those files is a great challenge. In this paper, we propose a Oneway Replica Consistency model in data grid environments, which is used for consistency maintenance issue. Furthermore, we anticipate striking a balance between improving data access performance and replica consistency in data grids. This work can find out the more efficient ways of utilizing storage space is an important point.

The problem of redundant RFID reader elimination has instigated researchers to propose different optimization heuristics due to the rapid advance of technologies in large scale RFID systems. In this paper, we present a layered elimination optimization (LEO) which is an algorithm independent technique aims to detect maximum amount of redundant readers could be safely removed or turned off with preserving original RFID network coverage. A significant improvement of the LEO scheme is that number of "write-to-tag" operations could be largely reduced during the redundant reader identification phase. Moreover, LEO is a distributed scheme which does not need to collect global information for centralizing control, leading no communications and synchronizations among RFID readers. To evaluate the performance of the proposed techniques, we have implemented the LEO technique along with another redundant reader identification algorithm and other hybrid schemes. In experimental results, the LEO is shown to be effective and provides superior performance in terms of larger number of redundant reader could be detected and with lower algorithm overheads.

In this paper, we present a peer-to-peer file sharing platform combined with data grid system for mobile devices. Facing the limit of network bandwidth and unstable signal strength in wireless network, wireless peer-to-peer architecture is now widely accepted as a new computing paradigm for wireless devices. In wireless P2P architecture, one can speedup parallel file transfer and enhance the communication stability by establishing multiple concurrent P2P connections. This paper mainly applies data grid system to deal with the problems of file location discovery and client certification. We propose an architecture that uses GridFTP protocol to establish a video sharing platform for mobile devices. Combined with data grid, the system can perform video analysis and classification upon on its computing resources, keeping the files in the newest state at all times.

Modern high performance computing systems are being increasingly deployed in a hierarchical fashion with multi-core computing platforms forming the base of the hierarchy. These systems are usually comprised of multiple racks, with each rack consisting of a finite number of chassis, and each chassis having multiple compute nodes or blades, based on multi-core architectures. The networks are also hierarchical with multiple levels of switches. Message exchange operations between processes that belong to different racks involve multiple hops across different switches and this directly affects the performance of collective operations. In this paper, we take on the challenges involved in detecting the topology of large scale InfiniBand clusters and leveraging this knowledge to design efficient topology-aware algorithms for collective operations. We also propose a communication model to analyze the communication costs involved in collective operations on large scale supercomputing systems. We have analyzed the performance characteristics of two collectives, MPI_Gather and MPI_Scatter, on such systems and we have proposed topology-aware algorithms for these operations. Our experimental results have shown that the proposed algorithms can improve the performance of these collective operations by almost 54% at the micro-benchmark level.
