NASA's aggressive plans for extensive deep space exploration with a new generation of unmanned space craft requires a dramatic increase in responsibilities for onboard computing to reduce size, weight, and power to drastically reduce mission costs. No longer will all raw sensor data be transmitted back to Earth but rather only the results from extensive preprocessing to decrease total link capacity by one to three orders of magnitude. A new approach to on board data processing is necessitated by this new expanded mission requirement. Processor-In-Memory (PIM) architecture combines logic and memory on the same integrated circuit to permit direct access to memory row buffers, greatly increasing effective memory bandwidth, reducing overhead and latency, and improving power efficiency. Organizing and managing the resources of PIM based systems is challenging. The PIM-MT architecture is an innovative approach to harnessing the physical resources of PIM technology through a message driven multithreaded virtual execution model. This paper describes the concepts of PIM-MT and its role in future spaceborne computing. © 1998 IEEE.

Unified Parallel C (UPC) is a programming model for shared-memory parallel computing on shared- and distributed-memory systems. The Berkeley UPC software, which operates on top of their Global Addressing Space Networking (GASNet) communication system, is a portable, high-performance implementation of UPC for large-scale clusters. The Scalable Coherent Interface (SCI), a torus-based system-area network (SAN), is known for its ability to provide very low latency transfers as well as its direct support for both shared-memory and message-passing communications. high-speed clusters constructed around SCI promise to he a potent platform for large-scale UPC applications. This work introduces the design of the core API for the new SCI conduit for GASNet and UPC, which is based on active messages (AM). Latency and bandwidth data were collected and are compared with raw SCI results and with other existing GASNet conduits. The outcome shows that the new GASNet SCI conduit is able to provide promising performance in support of UPC applications.

Social networks have evolved as a ubiquitous means of communication in our daily lives. Users consistently generate a large amount of data on social media platforms, which on the other hand has increased the complexity when selecting relevant social media content. Thus, recommender system has been emerged as a solution to provide personalized and user-centric media recommendations. However, social media has significantly broadened the scope of available inputs such as social sensing data and new types of social media. It not only offers new research opportunities for social media recommender systems, but also indicates that various domains may benefit from the application of social media recommender systems. Therefore, this paper conducts a comprehensive survey of state-of-the-art research between social media and recommender systems. The survey results identify a set of research challenges on how social media recommender systems can be applied in various domains such as healthcare and route planning. © 2023 IEEE.

In this paper we present a covariance based tracking algorithm for intelligent video analysis to assist marine biologists in understanding the complex marine ecosystem in the Ken-Ding sub-tropical coral reef in Taiwan by processing underwater real-time videos recorded in open ocean. One of the most important aspects of marine biology research is the investigation of fish trajectories to identify events of interest such as fish preying, mating, schooling, etc. This task, of course, requires a reliable tracking algorithm able to deal with 1) the difficulties of following fish that have multiple degrees of freedom and 2) the possible varying conditions of the underwater environment. To accommodate these needs, we have developed a tracking algorithm that exploits covariance representation to describe the object's appearance and statistical information and also to join different types of features such as location, color intensities, derivatives, etc. The accuracy of the algorithm was evaluated by using hand-labeled ground truth data on 30000 frames belonging to ten different videos, achieving an average performance of about 94%, estimated using multiple ratios that provide indication on how good is a tracking algorithm both globally (e.g. counting objects in a fixed range of time) and locally (e.g. in distinguish occlusions among objects).

Sketch is a data structure used to record frequencies of items in a multiset, which is widely used in data streams, data graph, distributed datasets processing, etc. It works with small memory usage and a high speed at the cost of a slight inaccuracy. In practice, frequencies of items in many datasets are non-uniformly distributed. Unfortunately, existing sketches can hardly work well on non-uniform datasets. To address this issue, we propose a new sketch framework, namely ABC framework, which can be applied to most existing sketches and can significantly improve the accuracy on non-uniform datasets. The key idea behind our framework is that when a counter overflows, it makes use of the space from the adjacent counters by operations of bits-borrowing and combination. Extensive experimental results show that our ABC framework improves the accuracy by 4.10 times and 4.49 times in average, respectively. A demo and all the related source codes are available on our homepage [1].

From prior studies on eXtreme Apprenticeship (XA), it can be seen that XA has emerged as an innovative and effective educational approach. The technology in computer science evolves rapidly and XA tackles the gap between University education and industry development. Additionally, distance learning by multimedia is more and more important, sometimes even becoming necessary. As a result, this paper intends to study how to integrate XA and multimedia to improve the learning performance in computer science, with particular reference to the programming courses. Since computer science is mostly driven by the new applications, XA and multimedia are considered to be effective and efficient to reduce the cognitive efforts by practical demonstration. The experimental results, based on the case study of the operating systems course at the Bachelor’s level, show that exploiting multimedia in XA can significantly improve the learning performance in terms of grade distributions, reliability, knowledge transfer and student satisfaction with respect to more traditional approaches based on frontal lectures. © The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer science+Business Media, LLC, part of Springer Nature 2024.

System size dependent topological zero modes in coupled topolectrical chains

In this paper, we demonstrate the emergence and disappearance of topological zero modes (TZMs) in a coupled topolectrical (TE) circuit lattice. Specifically, we consider non-Hermitian TE chains in which TZMs do not occur in the individual uncoupled chains, but emerge when these chains are coupled by interchain capacitors. The coupled system hosts TZMs which show size-dependent behaviors and vanish beyond a certain critical size. In addition, the emergence or disappearance of the TZMs in the open boundary condition spectra for a given size of the coupled system can be controlled by modulating the signs of its inverse decay length. Analytically, trivial and nontrivial phases of the coupled system can be distinguished by the differing ranks of their corresponding Laplacian matrix. The TE circuit framework enables the physical detection of the TZMs via electrical impedance measurements. Our work establishes the conditions for inducing TZMs and modulating their behavior in coupled TE chains.

Practically, we often face the dilemma that some of the examples for training a classifier are incorrectly labeled due to various subjective and objective factors. Although intensive efforts have been put to design classifiers that are robust to label noise, most of the previous methods have not fully utilized data distribution information. To address this issue, this paper introduces a bi-level learning paradigm termed "Spectral Cluster Discovery" (SCD) for combating with noisy labels. Namely, we simultaneously learn a robust classifier (Learning stage) by discovering the low-rank approximation to the ground-truth label matrix and learn an ideal affinity graph (Clustering stage). Specifically, we use the learned classifier to assign the examples with similar label to a mutual cluster. Based on the cluster membership, we use the learned affinity graph to explore the noisy examples based on the cluster membership. Both stages will reinforce each other iteratively. Experimental results on typical benchmark and real-world datasets verify the superiority of SCD to other label noise learning methods. © 2020 Inst. Sci. inf., Univ. Defence in Belgrade. Traditionally, the "best effort, cost free" model of Supercomputers/Grids does not consider pricing. Clouds have progressed towards a service-oriented paradigm that enables a new way of service provisioning based on "pay-as-you-go" model. Large scale many-task workflow (MTW) may be suited for execution on Clouds due to its scale-* requirement (scale up, scale out, and scale down). In the context of scheduling, MTW execution cost must be considered based on users' budget constraints. In this paper, we address the problem of scheduling MTW on Clouds and present a budget-conscious scheduling algorithm, referred to as ScaleStar (or Scale-*). ScaleStar assigns the selected task to a virtual machine with higher comparative advantage which effectively balances the execution time-and-monetary cost goals. In addition, according to the actual charging model, an adjustment policy, refer to as DeSlack, is proposed to remove part of slack without adversely affecting the overall makespan and the total monetary cost. We evaluate ScaleStar with an extensive set of simulations and compare with the most popular HEFT-based LOSS3 algorithm and demonstrate the superior performance of ScaleStar.

This paper demonstrates, via simulation, an electro-optic modulator based on a subwavelength Fabry-Perot resonator cavity with ultra-low power consumption. The device is modulated at a doped p-i-n junction overlapping the cavity in a silicon waveguide perforated with etched holes, with the doping area optimized for minimum power consumption. The surface area of the entire device is only 2.1 mum 2 . Our optical and electrical simulations demonstrate a resonance peak shift of 12 nm with 0.5 mW power consumption. Transient results indicate that the modulation depth exceeds 10 dB at a modulation speed of 100 MHz with the power consumption comparing favorably to a previous report [1]. This speed can be further improved to 250 MHz by using an optimized driving signal [2]. Finally, the etched holes forming the cavity have been tapered [3], [4] to maximize insertion, and the etching depth of those holes is tuned to reduce fabrication complexity. The device does not rely on ultra-high Q, and the huge peak shift detected could be applied to a sensor [5]-[7], modulator, or passive filter with built-in calibration.
