A survey on deep learning for polyp segmentation: techniques, challenges and future trends

Early detection and assessment of polyps play a crucial role in the prevention and treatment of colorectal cancer (CRC). Polyp segmentation provides an effective solution to assist clinicians in accurately locating and segmenting polyp regions. In the past, people often relied on manually extracted lower-level features such as color, texture, and shape, which often had problems capturing global context and lacked robustness to complex scenarios. With the advent of deep learning, more and more medical image segmentation algorithms based on deep learning networks have emerged, making significant progress in the field. This paper provides a comprehensive review of polyp segmentation algorithms. We first review some traditional algorithms based on manually extracted features and deep segmentation algorithms, and then describe benchmark datasets related to the topic. Specifically, we carry out a comprehensive evaluation of recent deep learning models and results based on polyp size, taking into account the focus of research topics and differences in network structures. Finally, we discuss the challenges of polyp segmentation and future trends in the field. © The Author(s) 2025.

Medical big data with artificial intelligence are vital in advancing digital ***,the opaque and non-standardised nature embedded in most medical data extraction is prone to batch effects and has become a significant obstacle to reproducing previous *** paper aims to develop an easy-to-use time-series multimodal data extraction pipeline,Quick-MIMIC,for standardised data extraction from MIMIC *** method can fully integrate different data structures into a time-series table,including structured,semi-structured,and unstructured *** also introduce two additional modules to Quick-MIMIC,a pipeline parallelization method and data analysis methods,for reducing the data extraction time and presenting the characteristics of the extracted data *** extensive experimental results show that our pipeline can efficiently extract the needed data from the MIMIC dataset and convert it into the correct format for further analytic tasks.

Machine learning models are increasingly used in time series prediction with promising results. The model explanation of time series prediction falls behind the model development and makes less sense to users in understanding model decisions. This paper proposes ES-Mask, a post-hoc and model-agnostic evolutionary strip mask-based saliency approach for time series applications. ES-Mask designs the mask consisting of strips with the same salient value in consecutive time steps to produce binary and sustained feature importance scores over time for easy understanding and interpretation of time series. ES-Mask uses an evolutionary algorithm to search for the optimal mask by manipulating strips in rounds, thus is agnostic to models by involving no internal model states in the search. The initial experiments on MIMIC-III data set show that ES-Mask outperforms state-of-the-art methods. Copyright © 2023, Association for the Advancement of Artificial Intelligence (***). From prior studies on eXtreme Apprenticeship (XA), it can be seen that XA has emerged as an innovative and effective educational approach. The technology in computer science evolves rapidly and XA tackles the gap between University education and industry development. Additionally, distance learning by multimedia is more and more important, sometimes even becoming necessary. As a result, this paper intends to study how to integrate XA and multimedia to improve the learning performance in computer science, with particular reference to the programming courses. Since computer science is mostly driven by the new applications, XA and multimedia are considered to be effective and efficient to reduce the cognitive efforts by practical demonstration. The experimental results, based on the case study of the operating systems course at the Bachelor’s level, show that exploiting multimedia in XA can significantly improve the learning performance in terms of grade distributions, reliability, knowledge transfer and student satisfaction with respect to more traditional approaches based on frontal lectures. © The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer science+Business Media, LLC, part of Springer Nature 2024.

Early diagnosis of osteonecrosis of the femoral head (ONFH) can inhibit the progression and improve femoral head preservation. The radiograph difference between early ONFH and healthy ones is not apparent to the naked eye. It is also hard to produce a large dataset to train the classification model. In this paper, we propose Asymmetric-Sensitive Transformer (AsT) to capture the uneven development of the bilateral femoral head to enable robust ONFH detection. Our ONFH detection is realized using the self-attention mechanism to femoral head regions while conferring sensitivity to the uneven development by the attention-shared transformer. The real-world experiment studies show that AsT achieves the best performance of AUC 0.9313 in the early diagnosis of ONFH and can find out misdiagnosis cases firmly. Social networks have evolved as a ubiquitous means of communication in our daily lives. Users consistently generate a large amount of data on social media platforms, which on the other hand has increased the complexity when selecting relevant social media content. Thus, recommender system has been emerged as a solution to provide personalized and user-centric media recommendations. However, social media has significantly broadened the scope of available inputs such as social sensing data and new types of social media. It not only offers new research opportunities for social media recommender systems, but also indicates that various domains may benefit from the application of social media recommender systems. Therefore, this paper conducts a comprehensive survey of state-of-the-art research between social media and recommender systems. The survey results identify a set of research challenges on how social media recommender systems can be applied in various domains such as healthcare and route planning. © 2023 IEEE.

The Big Data era has led to the rapid development of modern sciences. Making effective use of extremely large amounts of collected data is putting extremely urgent demands on high performance computing (HPC) systems, especially the resource allocation process, which is commonly managed by the job scheduler. Despite the potential for improved scheduling outcomes offered by modern algorithms, these systems still continue to favor the FCFS and EASY backfilling approach due to its straightforward implementation and fair resource allocation. In this paper, we propose a novel and robust backfilling scheme called Deviation Backfilling to enhance the efficiency of job scheduling on HPC systems while maintaining user fairness. Combined with the job runtime prediction method using kNN, the Deviation Backfilling uses the deviation between user estimates and system prediction as the delay threshold for the first job at the backfilling queue. Our experimental results show that Deviation Backfilling outperforms existing scheduling strategies regarding performance metrics on real-world datasets. This performance improvement also signifies the capability to motivate users to offer more accurate estimates for assisting the HPC scheduling procedures. © 2023 IEEE.

Power consumption has become a limiting factor in all areas of computing. Hence, making the most of the available power budget is paramount. To use the available budget most efficiently, techniques like dynamic voltage and frequency scaling and idle states can be used. This work analyzes the instructions UMWAIT, TPAUSE, and MWAITX on three different systems. We analyze their instruction latencies, power consumptions, and dependencies on core frequencies. To do so, we introduce benchmarks to gather performance and power parameters, which can be used for future software optimizations. Key findings include: The expected sleep duration passed to UMWAIT and TPAUSE can influence the depth of the user idle state. The actual sleep duration of TPAUSE increases stepwise with an increasing expected sleep duration. Requesting a deeper idle state leads to an additional sleep duration, which increases with a lower core frequency. The core frequency influences the instruction latency of TPAUSE, where a low frequency can lead to an irregular performance pattern. The latency of TPAUSE, UMWAIT, and MWAITX is most often higher than requested on the evaluated systems. Core power consumption can be reduced by ~20% ~70% compared to the usage of PAUSE. The latency for waking a core in user idle reflects the underlying hardware architecture with tens (desktop architecture with shallow idle states) to hundreds (server architecture with deep idle states) of nanoseconds at nominal frequencies.
