Distributed video coding (DVC) is a new paradigm of coding that makes very interest to itself in the past decade. It's usually based on temporal correlations between successive frames which are called key frames. But this approach failed for high object motion in a scene and need very complex decoder to cover it. In this paper we propose a novel technique to use spatial correlation instead of temporal correlation in a frame by dividing a single frame to two sub frames which one of them is used as a key frame for generate side information at the decoder. Simulation results show a significant improvement on rate distortion parameter in DVC schema. © 2011 IEEE.

Modeling and resolving lock contention for multi-threaded systems

Locks are efficient concurrent control mechanisms to ensure that shared resources are accessed by only a single thread in multi-threaded applications. However, for multi-core systems, lock usage leads to lock contention, which degrades program performance, increases system response time, and negatively affects scalability. This paper initially models lock contention from two aspects: static structure and dynamic behavior. Static constraints of lock contention that describe the contention among threads and the dynamic constraints that define the lock request behavior during contended process are presented. In addition, a contention-aware lock (CA-Lock) is proposed. The CA-Lock is an ordinary lock when there is no contention;it improves the concurrency by transforming into software transactional memory (STM) when the contention is serious. For those situations that are not fitted with STM, the CA-Lock can transform back into an ordinary lock. Primary experimental results show that the CA-Lock can track the best world of lock or STM. © 2011 ICIC International.

It provides a frame for the collaboration of researchers across Germany and offers access to distributed services and resources. The SLA4D-Grid project will enhance D-Grid by creating a service level agreement (SLA) layer which is transparently integrated into D-Grid and accessible for the D-Grid community.

With the development of systems biology, more and more researchers focus on the study of bio-molecular networks. In recent years, researchers in different fields have accumulated a large number of biological experimental data and algorithms for analysis and calculation of bio-molecular networks, but these data and methods are relatively independent, difficult to be utilized by biologists. Based on PSE-Bio, a problem solving environment for bioinformatics, this paper describes an integrated computing environment for bio-molecular networks in order to achieve molecular homology analysis, bio-molecular network building, querying, statistics and visualization.

We propose a method that automatically generates a smooth chase camera movement to follow a subject, a user-controlled character or a character with unknown behaviors, in a 3D environment freely in real time. We consider three objectives in generating the smooth-camera movement: to avoid collisions with obstacles, to avoid subject occlusions, and to choose a good viewpoint for looking at the subject. We evaluate the goodness of viewpoints by using a viewpoint entropy map and choose the best viewpoint as the goal position of the camera in real time. Afterwards, we move the camera toward the goal position by following the shortest path, found by the A* algorithm, on a roadmap graph. The resulting camera movement has a high degree of freedom and fulfills the three objectives above. Our method is effective for third-person-view 3D applications in tracking the real-time movement of user-controlled characters in exploring a 3D environment. © Springer-Verlag 2010.

Sixty-two years after the first photos of earth taken by a camera aboard a V-2 rocket in October, 1946, and forty-eight years since the first CORONA satellite images were captured, the status of remote sensing research and applications within the African continent has made dramatic progress. Many African countries now have remote sensing research centers, within government agencies, research institutes and universities. Some countries in Africa currently have earth observing and/or telecommunications satellites in orbit and/or have such assets in various planning stages. The authors document such progress, in addition to the constraints to further applications of remote sensing for sustainable development in Africa, with special reference to data distribution constraints. Moreover, the authors address the urgency for bandwidth improvements within the African continent, so as to enable sustainable development initiatives to benefit from advances in high performance computing, required for ab initio near-real-time analysis of satellite-data. Such capabilities, it is argued, are propaedeutic for time-critical initiatives, such as vulnerability assessment, disaster preparedness and mitigation, emergency response, humanitarian assistance and post-calamity reconstruction, associated with a wide array of biogenic and anthropogenic disasters. Case studies of advances in infrastructure for satellite remote sensing and high performance computing, with implications for sustainable development in Africa, are provided from Egypt, Nigeria and South Africa.

Due to overall popularity of the Internet, e-learning has become a hot method of learning in recent years. Through the Internet, learners can freely absorb new knowledge without the restriction of time and place. Many companies have adopted e-learning to train their employees. The e-learning system can make an enterprise more competitive by increasing the knowledge of its employees. As we know, e-learning has become one of the most potential e-commerce businesses. At present, most e-learning environment architectures are in consideration of a single computer or server as its erecting foundation. As soon as its workload increases, the software and hardware need to be updated or renewed; this is a big burden to a company with insufficient budget. Thus, in this research we employ a kind of grid computing technology, called "access grid", to integrate the idle computer resources in an enterprise into an e-learning platform for substituting the purchase of costly high-level server and equipment. The access grid supports group-to-group communication via high-speed networking over the Internet. It provides high quality audio and real-time video interactive interface for e-learning users. All the hardware cost is reasonable so that companies or academies can easily set up their own access grid node. By using access grid technologies, enterprises can integrate their training materials into knowledge repository such as "data grid" as the e-learning VOD platform so that the knowledge can be shared and published more flexibly and widely.

This paper presents a lifetime-sensitive scheduling method. By shortening lifetimes of variables in scheduling phase, it can lighten register pressure in register allocation phase, lessen spill codes and result in more efficient object codes. The preliminary experimental results show that this method is an effective scheduling method.
